NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/24/2010 .................................................. Antony & the Johnsons - Thank You For Your Love EP (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. In anticipation of their new album, Swanlights (out 10/12). The EP features 4 additional non-album tracks including originals "You Are The Treasure," and "My Lord My Love" as well as a cover of Dylan's "Pressing On" and Lennon's "Imagine" in collaboration with experimental composer William Basinski. The CD will also contain the video for "Thank You For Your Love". LP version TBA. Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus (LITA) .................................................. Recorded as a series of duets and solo performances, with lover, actress, and model Birkin, the pair's chemistry-enhanced collaboration was thrust about the record buying public to much shock and horror, but indeed found global success. The disc quickly shot its cigarette brandishing author and fresh-faced vocalist in to the international spotlight; and although the lead-off single "Je T'aime" and it's seductive purrs reached top slot in the UK charts, no one other than the Pope branded the tune offensive and blasphemous. Ever the conversationalist, Gainsbourg wittily replied, "we couldn't have gotten a better PR man!" Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Hawk (Vanguard) .................................................. It's a small mystery why 'Campbell & Lanegan' hasn't yet become shorthand for a certain kind of Belle et la Bete pairing that explores the difference between 2 different vocal textures and exploits the fantasy of delicate young Bel being tempted by a grizzled old grunge-legend, and maybe have to tame him or show her own teeth. Before, they leaned towards retro-pop and chamber-folk, but now the county-blues elements have come to the fore, and on the title-track the aggression their music's always needed. S. Carey - All We Grow (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. The debut album from S. Carey is the result of a young lifetime immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show. Opening this fall for Tallest Man on Earth at the Bluebird! !!! - Strange Weather, Isn't It (Warp) .................................................. Following in the footsteps of artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Depeche Mode, who have flocked to Berlin in order to mainline the city's legendary dark energy, !!! traveled to the capital to produce a record that is simultaneously brooding and somehow their poppiest. Its a texturally rich record and is filled with deep, galvanizing grooves. But there's a dark undercurrent running through the record that acts as a counterpoint to the glittering surfaces. Margaret Cho - Cho Dependent (Clownery) .................................................. Margaret Cho collaborates with artists such as Andrew Bird, Tegan and Sara, Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Brendan Benson and others on comedy songs. Cotton Jones - Tall Hours in the Glowstream (Suicide Squeeze) .................................................. An exciting new chapter in the bands young career. While "Paranoid Cocoon" found the band lending itself to the occasional lengthy jam, Tall Hours finds Cotton Jones reigning in the songs, for a more succinct pop feel. The resulting sounds are rich and charmingly lo-fi, full of vivid imagery, gorgeous vocal harmonies and makes it the band's most accessible album yet. Dead Confederate - Sugar (Razor & Tie) .................................................. Winter storms are punishingly cold and uncomfortable, but are an important source of water for spring growth. Likewise for Dead Confederate, the series of New Jersey blizzards that besieged the recording also heralded growth from the darker, somber realm of their critically acclaimed Wrecking Ball. With an evolving approach and focused, streamlined sound, and a guest appearance from Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis, Sugar explores new styles beyond the aching, bleak psychedelia of the debut. Eels - Tomorrow Morning (E-Works) .................................................. Eels mastermind Mark Oliver Everett is releasing the band's second album of 2010 today, the final installment in a trilogy that was preceded by January's End Times and last year's Hombre Lobo. Dubbed Tomorrow Morning, the 14-track album is released on Everett's own label, E Works Records. Fitz & the Tantrums - Picking up the Pieces (Dangerbird) .................................................. Since their first show at Hollywood's Hotel Cafe in December 2008, soulsters Fitz & the Tantrums have toured with Maroon 5, played to thousands at Colorado's world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, shared the stage New Year's Eve with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and performed on KCRW's esteemed show, Morning Becomes Eclectic. The recipe for success? Six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, one vintage organ and nonstop touring. Land of Talk - Cloak and Cipher (Saddle Creek) .................................................. Land of Talk's follow up to their critically adored debut marks an electric step forward for the band musically and sonically, establishing vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Elizabeth Powell as one of Canada's most exciting new musical voices. The New York Times raved in a live review, "[Powell] proved herself a strong guitarist and a calmly arresting lead singer She made a virtue of directness and brevity, letting small details speak for themselves." Dylan Leblanc - Paupers Field (Rough Trade) .................................................. On Dylan's debut LP, a lost world is brought to life - both in the carefully sculpted songs and rich well of country soul from which those songs emerge. Although the Golden era of Alabama's fabled Muscle Shoals sound had passed by the time Dylan was born, his ancestral roots connected him to one of the most significant sources in the rich tapestry of American music. His father's position as a session player and songwriter meant that early in life Dylan was privy to the sights and sounds of an unvarnished, vanishing epoch. Magic Kids - Memphis (True Panther) .................................................. With Memphis, their debut LP, Magic Kids have crafted a record that lives up to the Memphis tradition of individualistic, joyful music-making. They create swelling and heartfelt baroque pop gems. Recorded by Shane Stonebeck (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells), Memphis packs a seriously powerful sonic punch. Magic Kids share the ability to take a tiny and simple song, a moment of wide-eyed sincerity, and translate it into something that is bursting with life. Mogwai - Special Moves (Rock Action) .................................................. Mogwai are thrilled to announce their first official live concert film, with accompanying live album. The 45-minute film presents itself as a modern urban noir thriller, a black-and-white journey, starting on the same electrifying NY streets Bernard Hermann scored for Martin Scorsese. Manholes hiss steam, taxi headlights flare in the camera lens and strangers wait in street corner shadows. Moon and Le Scouarnec call their film an experience of the senses... a lifetime of feelings in just one night. No Age - Glitter 7"/12" (Sub Pop) .................................................. Everything in Between, the new album from the Los Angeles-based art-punk duo No Age, is due out on September 28. In celebration and anticipation of this new album, Sub Pop are putting out two "Glitter" singles! Both the 12" and the 7" feature the album track "Glitter," but each single has different, non-album b-sides (the 7" has one called "Inflorescence," and the 12" has "In Rebound" and "Vision II"). Catch em at Rhino's on 9/15! Ra Ra Riot - The Orchard (Barsuk) .................................................. Ra Ra Riot's debut brought with it some beautiful and sparkly ruminations on the fragile things in life. Their new album is an incredibly self-assured step for the band, delivering both hook-laden pop jams like first single "Boy" and the new but familiar to live audiences "Too Dramatic" and ruminative slow-burns like the Anton Chekov/Kate Bush inspired "The Orchard" and album-closer "Keep It Quiet." Soap & Skin - Lovetune for Vacuum (PIAS) .................................................. Austria's Anja Plaschg is part of a generation of music lovers not bound by the strictures of geography and commerce, free to gorge on sounds in limitless abundance. So is it any wonder that Lovetune sounds like some unholy union of Nico and Regina Spektor and Aphex Twin and a sizable chunk of the Fonal and Monika rosters? And some You Are Free era Cat Power too, and Autechre, and maybe Stina Nordenstam, and certainly Bjork, and a good deal of the classical/art song vanguard as well. Indeed, it's tempting to posit Lovetune as the sort of record Nico might be making today had she not taken off on her bicycle that fateful day in 1988. Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Rivers (Control Group) .................................................. W&P's Rivers is a double CD of two distinctly different EPs which were released in June on vinyl and are now together for the first time. Retina was recorded in Iceland with the 12-strong Schola Cantorum Choir (also featured on Bjork's Medulla) in a church, with a deliberately live sound. Completed at the same time, but with a separate sonic character, Iris was recorded in Reykjavik by Ben Frost and mixed by Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjork, Bonnie Prince Billy). .................................................. Following up on their 2007 release Time On Earth - their first studio recording in 14 years - the internationally acclaimed Crowded House deliver Intriguer. Produced by Jim Scott (Wilco), this all-new recording brings together singer/guitarist and chief songwriter Neil Finn with original Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour and keyboardist/guitarist Mark Hart. Says Finn: "Intriguer is exotic in parts, traditional in origin. It may just be the best thing we've done." Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul (Capitol) .................................................. Dark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse with photography (and two vocals!) provided by director David Lynch. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, the afore-mentioned David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt. Tom Jones - Praise & Blame (Lost Highway) .................................................. This is Tom Jones going back to his roots on an album of gospel, blues, traditional and country songs, wearing his heart on his sleeve, emotionally raw and true. Recording with producer Ethan Johns at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios coaxed the most exhilarating performances out of the singer and with musicians including Booker T Jones, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings at hand, Tom has quite simply delivered his tour de force. Los Lobos - Tin Can Trust (Shout) .................................................. The Grammy-winning East L.A. band Los Lobos is releasing Tin Can Trust, their first collection of new original material in four years. Featuring powerful rock 'n' roll, blistering blues, two Spanish-language tracks (a cumbia and a Norte–a), and even a Grateful Dead cover, the album is classic Lobos through and through. And, like many of their albums, it is an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived, dealing largely with the economic challenges many people are facing today. Los Lobos has a national tour co-headlining with John Hiatt in August, with aggressive schedule continuing throughout 2010 and 2011. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (Merge) .................................................. Written, arranged, performed and produced by the Arcade Fire and co-produced by Markus Dravs, The Suburbs was recorded around Montreal and New York over the past two years. The Arcade Fire's 2004 debut Funeral featured strongly in Album of the Decade Polls around the world including NME, Pitchfork, Guardian, Mojo and Rolling Stone. Their 2007 follow-up Neon Bible, debuted number 2 in the U.S. Both records were nominated for Best Alternative Album Grammys. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
