We are pleased to announce the first CAN-O-WORMS don't-call-it-a-fest Fest. Oct 1 & 2 brings 12 (or so) honest-to-God ROCK&ROLL bands to B'ton. We'll be hosting some here, there'll be some playing upstairs from us at The Lodge (aka Space101). And more bands at the Bishop. Confused? So are we. But it's all still coming together and we couldn't wait any longer to announce it. Bands include The Yolks (Chicago), Eric & the Happy Thoughts (Indy), The Perennials (Indy), Vacation Club (Indy), The Brothers Gross (the Region), 3-Man Band (Knoxville), Burning Itch (Knoxville), along with locals Apache Dropout, Charlie & the Skunks, Walking Ruins, The Constants and Landlord. Don't know many (or any) of these bands? That's okay. In fact, lucky you. We envy you really. There's a world of discovery afoot. Trust us. One of these bands is going to be your new favorite band. Did I mention that it's going to be cheap? Watch this space for more info in the coming weeks. We are having an awesome sale on Sub Pop Records' 2010 releases right now. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/31/2010 .................................................. The Acid Archives: 2nd Edition Book (Lysergia) .................................................. The Acid Archives will delight any lover of rare and great underground music from the 1960s-1970s. All the elements that made the first edition such a hit are here. The A-Z section has been expanded with 90 new pages, detailing many hundreds of previously-unknown LPs. Just as exciting is a brand-new section of special features, where leading experts present the best and rarest albums within exotica, lounge, '70s funk & soul, Southern rock, new age, custom labels and tax scam records. Fully re-designed and now printed entirely in color. The 400 pages in the second edition (100 pages more than the old version) are loaded with color images of obscure and trippy album sleeves, posters and band photos. Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses - Junky Star (Lost Highway) .................................................. Bingham recently won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Original Song for 'The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart)', which he co-wrote with multi-Grammy Award-winning producer T-Bone Burnett. The collaboration between Bingham and Burnett developed into a solid artistic relationship during the Crazy Heart recordings, and as a result, Burnett signed on to produce Junky Star. Burnett created a recording environment that perfectly complimented the themes and textures of Bingham's reflective songwriting and gravelly voice. Carl Broemel - All Birds Say (ATO) .................................................. Perhaps you knew him way back when, the days of local bands Old Pike or Planet Earth, or maybe you know him as a guitar slinger for My Morning Jacket. Deft in its presentation, the songs on the album unfold in a dream-like stream of consciousness with lush and elegant arrangements. The album's brilliance is displayed in Broemel's effortless delivery. It's the perfect amalgamation of lazy sophistication...whimsical poise and grace. The instrumentation serves as the ideal complement to the Broemel's well crafted set of modern-folk standards; complete with pedal steel, dobro, strings, autoharp, clarinet, bassoon, vibraphone, and a baritone sax, among others. Think Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Neal Casal, Andrew Bird, Mose Allison, and early Boz Scaggs singing an orchestrated chorus of breezy ballads and waltzes. Intelligence - Males (In the Red) .................................................. The 6th full-length from Seattle's The Intelligence. This time, main-brain Lars Finberg ditched his usual method of recording all the instruments himself and had his current touring band play on it--Susannah Welbourne, Beren Ekine Huett (Eat Skull) and Chris Woodhouse (Mayyors, FM Knives, Karate Party), who also served as the record's producer. The results are as powerful as a punch in the face by Mike Tyson but with the velvet touch of a dandy fop. Marrying buzzsaw punk, DIY Post-Punk, ramshackle Garage, and Pop hooks aplenty, Males is The Intelligence's finest statement to date. Jenny & Johnny - I'm Having Fun Now (WB) .................................................. Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice have been collaborating on and off for years, each contributing to the other's solo records and live shows, but with this record they had a different intention: using their two voices in close harmony and playing practically every instrument themselves. The result is an eleven song thirty-five minute blast of whip-smart rock and roll. This is not a Rilo Kiley record, a Jenny Lewis record, or a Johnathan Rice record. This is Jenny And Johnny. Quest for Fire - Lights from Paradise (Tee Pee) .................................................. Quest For Fire are Canada's most beloved psych rockers. Fusing hard space rock with the plodding primitive thud of fuzzed out garage, QFF set out with pure undeniable power to create their own contemporary take on classic rock and psychedelia. "Lights From Paradise" is a beautiful mash of colorful, dreamy hard rock, Spacemen 3 drone and heavy psychedelic swirl. Quest For Fire includes Chad Ross and Andrew Moszynski formerly of Toronto garage rock greats "The Deadly Snakes" and Mike Max of defunct Hamilton bashers "Cursed". Philip Selway - Familial (Nonesuch) .................................................. A collection of sublimely fragile, haunting, and heartfelt songs that will surprise many, and not only because drummers traditionally don't do this kind of thing. 'Familial' is so persuasively good, it sounds like Selway has always been a singer-songwriter. The morning Phil talks about his record for the very first time, he still has to leave for a rehearsal down the road by an acclaimed Oxford-based band, named Radiohead, for whom Selway has drummed immaculately and imaginatively for the last 20 years. And with the admission, 'It's a cardinal sin for drummers to come in to rehearsals with the comment 'I've got this song'!' He knows the time has come for his songs, put on ice when drumming took over in his late teens, to emerge into the light. Sahara Smith - Myth of the Heart (Traffic) .................................................. "Sahara is the best new artist I've heard in years." - T-Bone Burnett. Located 28 miles southwest of Austin, Wimberley, TX, boasts natural springs and gravesites of early pioneers. It's also been the hometown to Sahara Smith a stunning, young singer-songwriter who started performing at age 12, and first garnered national attention at age 15 when she placed second in a contest for young songwriters on A Prairie Home Companion. The album, helmed by T-Bone, features many of Burnett's first-call session players, including drummer Jay Bellerose, guitarist Marc Ribot, and bassist Dennis Crouch. Richard Thompson - Dream Attic (Shout Factory) .................................................. Richard Thompson, one of the most distinguished guitarists and songwriters of our time, returns with Dream Attic, a collection of 13 brand-new songs recorded in front of a live audiences during a February 2010 West Coast tour. By recording Dream Attic on stage, Thompson was able to capture the interaction between himself and his band members, who between them add acoustic guitar, mandolin, violin, sax, bass and drums into the mix. Throughout, listeners are treated not only to phenomenal musicianship, but also a typically diverse and strong set of new songs. VA - Field Recordings From Alan Lomax's Southern Journey 1959-1960 LPs (Mississippi) .................................................. "In 1959 & 1960, at the height of the Folk Revival, Alan Lomax undertook the first-ever stereo field recording trip through the American South to document its still thriving vernacular musical culture. He traveled through Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, and North Carolina, making over 70 hrs of recordings. To celebrate the Southern Journey's 50th anniversary, Mississippi Recs and the Alan Lomax Collection have collaborated on 5 commemorative LPs, spanning the breadth of Lomax's Southern recordings, drawing on new transfers of the original 1/4" tapes, and featuring a considerable amount of previously unreleased material. Each volume is being sold separately with its own distinctive packaging. All come with a 12-page booklet featuring many never before published photos. VA - The History Of Indian Film Music 10CD BOX (Times Square) .................................................. The first ever authentic historic collection of Bollywood music tracing its history from its beginning in 1930 to the present. The 168 tracks feature leading vocalists including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Sonu Niigaam and many, many more. The development of Indian film music is traced from being overtly classical to being influenced by jazz and rock & roll in the 60s and new age sounds in the 1970s, thanks to the musical genius of RD Burman. Later, the 80s & 90s sections introduce other influences like disco and hip hop, culminating in the 2000 section where Sufi and folk begin to appear and melody once again makes a comeback. Accompanied by a hardbound book tracing the history of the music with rare pictures. VA - Hookup Klub Round One (Hozac) .................................................. Yes, its finally here, all on one handly format for accessing the hottest cuts from the first Round of the HoZac singles club, along with two previously unreleased bonus tracks by Teepee and Idle Times. This compilation spans the first 10 elusive subscription-only 7" records released from 2009-2010, featuring rare tracks by Dum Dum Girls, Woven Bones, Box Elders, Flight, White Mystery, Teepee, Idle Times, Mother of Tears, Art Thieves, and Teeth (the elusive Blank Dogs / Spider side project), and is not to be missed. .................................................. Following up on their 2007 release Time On Earth - their first studio recording in 14 years - the internationally acclaimed Crowded House deliver Intriguer. Produced by Jim Scott (Wilco), this all-new recording brings together singer/guitarist and chief songwriter Neil Finn with original Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour and keyboardist/guitarist Mark Hart. Says Finn: "Intriguer is exotic in parts, traditional in origin. It may just be the best thing we've done." Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul (Capitol) .................................................. Dark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse with photography (and two vocals!) provided by director David Lynch. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, the afore-mentioned David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt. Tom Jones - Praise & Blame (Lost Highway) .................................................. This is Tom Jones going back to his roots on an album of gospel, blues, traditional and country songs, wearing his heart on his sleeve, emotionally raw and true. Recording with producer Ethan Johns at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios coaxed the most exhilarating performances out of the singer and with musicians including Booker T Jones, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings at hand, Tom has quite simply delivered his tour de force. Los Lobos - Tin Can Trust (Shout) .................................................. The Grammy-winning East L.A. band Los Lobos is releasing Tin Can Trust, their first collection of new original material in four years. Featuring powerful rock 'n' roll, blistering blues, two Spanish-language tracks (a cumbia and a Norte–a), and even a Grateful Dead cover, the album is classic Lobos through and through. And, like many of their albums, it is an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived, dealing largely with the economic challenges many people are facing today. Los Lobos has a national tour co-headlining with John Hiatt in August, with aggressive schedule continuing throughout 2010 and 2011. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (Merge) .................................................. Written, arranged, performed and produced by the Arcade Fire and co-produced by Markus Dravs, The Suburbs was recorded around Montreal and New York over the past two years. The Arcade Fire's 2004 debut Funeral featured strongly in Album of the Decade Polls around the world including NME, Pitchfork, Guardian, Mojo and Rolling Stone. Their 2007 follow-up Neon Bible, debuted number 2 in the U.S. Both records were nominated for Best Alternative Album Grammys. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
