More details next week! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 9/14/2010 .................................................. Azure Ray - Drawing Down the Moon (Saddle Creek) .................................................. It's been nearly seven years since Azure Ray duo Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor released their critically acclaimed and most recent album Hold On Love. With 3 prior albums and an EP, the duo drew fans from around the globe with their transcendent songwriting and stunning vocals, and Drawing is an even more impressive and beguiling delight. Azure Ray are famed for their bittersweet melancholy and its a perfect ode to their harmonious musical gifts. Black Angels - Phosphene Dream (Blue Horizon) .................................................. The Black Angels third album, and first release on Blue Horizon (founded by Seymour Stein, former head of Sire Records), is the highly anticipated Phosphene Dream. Produced and mixed by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother, Band of Horses, Black Mountain) over a period of six months in Los Angeles, the album shows off a bold new direction for The Black Angels both sonically and musically, a fresh take on the neo-Psychedelic movement they've been at the forefront of for years. Free Lithograph with purchase while supplies last. Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Wilderness Heart, the new album by Black Mountain, is packed with succinct rock songs that pulse and pound with startling precision: it pummels you and you ask for more. This is arguably the band's tightest, most concentrated venture, but there's still plenty of raw rock energy at work. "It's our most metal and most folk oriented record so far," songwriter Stephen McBean says. "It's all about where we were at the time the machines were rolling." Blonde Redhead - Penny Sparkle (4AD) .................................................. Penny Sparkle is the band's third album for 4AD - and marks another sonic twist in their already adventurous canon. It was made over the last year with the band journeying between New York and Stockholm to work with production duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Fever Ray, Massive Attack) and as with their previous album, 23, Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) was enlisted to mix it. Gorgeous, as always. Buke & Gass - Riposte (Brassland) .................................................. Brooklyn-based Buke and Gass are Arone Dyer on the "buke" (a 6-string baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the "gass" (a guitar-bass hybrid). Both members also mobilize a small army of foot percussion, filtering the result through various pedals, ampls and homemade inventions while Arone's supermelodic vocal lines weave through the beautiful yet unwieldy musical matter. It's a surprisingly complex sound for 2 people and all the invention and musical multi-tasking makes for live shows that are visually unexpected and sonically explosive, balancing light and dark, calamity and control. Chromeo - Business Casual (Atlantic) .................................................. Arrogant ladies, dancefloor seduction, boudoir skills, love gone wrong, and knights in shining armor... Chromeo does all this and more with their trademark Franco-insouciance-that-borders-on-coolness and their always sexy worldliness (pause). In these uncertain times of financial upheaval and musical mediocrity, Chromeo's 'Business Casual' is a testament to the fact that inspirational funk shall always prevail. Vive le Chromeo! Crocodiles - Sleep Forever (Fat Possum) .................................................. Last year Crocodiles released their debut album. Straddling vast sonic terrains from the jagged guitar stabs of street-strutting lead single Neon Jesus, to throbbing kraut rock, expansive shoegaze and irresistibly danceable disco-punk jams, Summer Of Hate drew comparisons with The Velvets and Primal Scream. Sleep Forever is an unmistakably more refined beast than its predecessor. Drum and organ whirls envelope you and nod to Ladies and Gentlemen era spiritualized as much as Neu! and The Velvet Underground. The Drums - s/t (Downtown) .................................................. Following a massive wave of critical acclaim and buzz. The Drums' spellbinding sound takes inspiration from elements of some of the greatest bands in history from The Smiths to the The Shangri-las and fuses them with the band's own raw energy and excitement. "Let's Go Surfing" sounds like a day at Coney Island with The Cure on the boombox. The melancholy sound of "Book of Stories" is offset with an understated sweetness and innocence in the lyrics and vocal. The rhythm and reverb will force you to dance and the melodies will stay with you on first listen. Dungen - Skit I Allt (Mexican Summer) .................................................. One of the most lasting and honorable imports of music hereabouts, Sweden's Dungen sweetly return with a collection of gorgeous rippers and graceful jazz filled polyrhythms called Skit I Allt. At ease with effervescent pop, third-eye popping psychedelia, heavy rock, spider-web folk and breezy jazz, Dungen's dynamism astounds throughout. Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues (Bloodshot) .................................................. Harlem River Blues straddles not only the Mason-Dixon, but time itself. As versed in Mance Lipscomb as he is in M. Ward and sporting Marc Jacobs suspenders, Justin Townes Earle is a man beyond eras. With Harlem River Blues, a record that's perfect for late Indian summer nights on either the front porch or fire escape, Justin's found yet another way to be a timeless original. Justin won Best New & Emerging Artist at the 2009 Americana Music Awards. Midnight at the Movies was named one of the best records of 2009 by Amazon, received four stars in Rolling Stone, and was praised globally. El Guincho - Pop Negro (XL) .................................................. As unique as he is talented, El Guincho blends a mix of sounds in his music that demand he be treated as a musician in a class of his own, while his music has all the comforts of familiarity without easily being pigeon holed. Pop Negro is a blend of afro-beat percussion, psych tropicalia, trance repetition, steel drums, and much much more. Pop Negro is an album that will transport the listener to an island paradise that no one has ever been to but that everyone knows exists somewhere in our collective music minds. Epsilons - Killed 'em Deader Than A Six Card Poker Hand LP (Captcha) .................................................. Ty Segall may be a household name in the modern garage-punk scene, but many are unaware of his previous band Epsilons who released two mighty records in 06 & 07. This, the second of their two LPs, sounds like dark carnival music from a SoCal county fair on the wrong side of the tracks looking through the same Funhouse mirror previously distorted by the likes of the Mummies, Thee Oh Sees, and countless other backyard heroes spewing classic doses of house party madness. There's mondo guitar, bass, drums, and plenty of organ and vocal creep to keep us on our heels & toes. It scrapes raw like fresh road-raspberry from a drunken skateboard fall but feels as good as your lover's ass in your hand right before they punch you for feeling her/him up in front of everyone. Issued for the first time on LP by Chicago label Captcha, who released the utterly awesome Ty Segall compilation Horn The Unicorn and Oh Sees' Hounds of Foggy Notion LP. Grinderman - 2 (Anti) .................................................. The first thing that hits you about Grinderman 2 is that you've never heard anything like it. The debut did its job, defining the band - marking a clear contrast with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Nick, Warren, Martyn & Jim forged a distinctly different way of working together. They cast off musical baggage, shrugged off accepted wisdom, and tested pre conceptions about who they were as musicians. In the process, they took to the Bad Seeds hallowed legacy with a baseball bat. The new album combines the structured invention of their live performance and the unrestrained free for all of their studio improvisation. But these guys also know something about the art of writing songs. Junip - Fields (Mute) .................................................. Junip was formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the late 90s by Jose Gonzalez (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya (drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ, moog). Their sound can be familiar to those who have listened to Gonzalez's critically acclaimed records, but added to the mix on top of his nylon stringed guitar and distinctive voice are organs, synths and drums. The songs are often dynamic, melodic and shadowy. Les Savy Fav - Root for Ruin (French Kiss) .................................................. Since their emergence from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1996, Les Savy Fav have been building a passionate following among musicians, fans, and critics the old fashioned way: by earning it. In a world where technologies speed new music to listeners and enable young bands instant access to limitless audience, LSF is among an increasingly rare breed of band who built their audience city by city and fan by fan. The approach has yielded something even more rare: a fully seasoned band at the peak of their skill that has not been blown out by hype and overexposure. With their new release, Les Savy Fav seems poised for the kind of widespread acclaim many have felt they have long deserved. Megafaun - Heretofore (Hometapes) .................................................. Heretofore, a mini-album and Megafaun's third release in as many years, is yet another articulation of the bands evolved Americana vernacular. Rather than push the boundaries with sonic plundering or structural pillaging, however, Heretofore nds Megafaun pairing ve of its most concise, communicative challenging, compelling experiment ever, a radiant and redemptive 13-minute instrumental called "Comprovisation for Connor Pass." Mice Parade - What It Means to Be Left-Handed (Fat Cat) .................................................. Part children's cartoon, part career retrospective, What It Means To Be Left-Handed is the first Mice Parade album to be released in the band's second decade of existence. Diverging from the pop sensibilities of Mice Parade's most recent successes - Bem-Vinda Vontade and Mice Parade - it is a fresh adventure, all over the map and awash in color; splashes of West-African Highlife mingle with Flamenco, Brazilian Jazz, and the late 80s indie rock that band founder Adam Pierce was stuck on in high school. Of Montreal - False Priest (Polyvinyl) .................................................. Teaming up with Grammy-nominated producer Jon Brion (Kanye West, Fiona Apple), of Montreal's mastermind Kevin Barnes traveled to famed Ocean Way Recording (Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra) to record False Priest, his self-professed masterpiece. False Priest is speaker-rattling heavy on the low end and features appearances by Janelle Monae and Solange Knowles (Beyonce's sister). Buy it today 9/14 and enter to win some fabulous prizes! Robert Plant - Band of Joy (Rounder) .................................................. Robert Plant's Band of Joy reflects his unquenchable thirst for new songs and new sounds. Not satisfied with his stature as one of the great innovators and heroes of pop music, he continues to let his curiosity guide him to unexplored territory. Building on the roots-imbued sound he achieved with Alison Krauss on the wildly successful Raising Sand, Plant's song selection and incomparable vocals make Band of Joy a new triumph. Jason Simon - s/t (Tee Pee) .................................................. Jason Simon, best known for his work as the guitarist and singer for the seminal heavy psych band Dead Meadow, releases his first solo record. It is a stripped down and intimate record filled with intricate guitar work and poignant well-thought lyrics. There are slight shades of Bert Jansch, Leonard Cohen, Sandy Bull, and Townes Van Zandt but only shades as it is most certainly its own thing. It is a record to remind the listener that heavy does not come from loud distortion and huge drums but comes from the depth within the song itself. Mavis Staples - You Are Not Alone (Anti) .................................................. Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilco's studio The Loft, You Are Not Alone showcases the iconic singer at her most powerful and fervent. The album mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Superchunk - Majesty Shredding (Merge) .................................................. Since releasing their first 7" in '89, Superchunk has run the gamut of milestone albums: early punk rock stompers, polished mid-career masterpieces, and lush, adventurous curveballs. Conventional wisdom holds that a band two decades into its career can only rehash or reinvent, but with Majesty Shredding, Superchunk has done something entirely different. Neither a return nor a departure, Majesty Shredding telescopes two decades into 41 indelible, action-packed minutes. It is the sound of youthful exuberance fine-tuned with grown-up confidence. Underworld - Barking (Om) .................................................. Pioneering musically and questing lyrically, Underworld have forced the pace of electronic music. 'Barking' is the title of Underworld's first album in 3 years, and their first to be constructed with a brilliant cast of co-conspirators. All the tracks were written by the band in their Essex studio before being given to handpicked studio heads from across the whole spectrum of dance music to add some of their style and creativity to the band's raw material. The result is a pimped-up Underworld record. The Vaselines - Sex With An X (Sub Pop) .................................................. Formed in Glasgow in 1987, The Vaselines released 2 singles and 1 album then split up in 1989. They might have faded into obscurity but for the intervention of a certain band from Seattle. Nirvana covered 3 Vaselines songs, helping to fuel a growing after-the-fact appreciation of their seedy, two-and-a-half chord, garage pop manifesto. 20+ years on and entirely worth the wait. Bonus 7" with purchase! The Walkmen - Lisbon (Fat Possum) .................................................. Lisbon was recorded over the course of 8 months with You & Me producer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav). The band then traveled to Dallas to finish the album with producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky). Featuring the band's signature vintage instrument-sound, Lisbon will showcase 'A lot of stuff that's early Elvis and Sun Records kind of sounds,' says frontman Hamilton Leithauser. Free bonus 7" with purchase! Weezer - Hurley (Epitaph) .................................................. Produced by Rivers Cuomo and Shawn Everett, Hurley is a high-energy Rock album that wastes no time with the first single "Memories," an impassioned look at nostalgia with fast tempo, buzzing guitar riffs and killer hooky chorus. Fueled by a newfound sense of independence, Hurley finds the band making some of the most powerful and adventuresome music of their storied career. Known for their quirky album artwork, Weezer have done it yet again. The cover features a simple, yet astonishing close-up of actor Jorge Garcia, which fans of the Lost series will no-doubt find as perplexing as fascinating. LP version on 9/28. White Boy & the Average Rat Band - s/t LP (Roach) .................................................. Reish of heavy & fuzzed out proto metal jammer that will satisfy Heshers & Rockers alike. Word has always been this masterpiece is the work of a lone duder from Virginia yet cover has 4 bad asses spoiling for a rager. Its speedy not-quite-metal hard rock with a pulverizing distortion sound (to call it fuzz guitar is to understate it by a mile). One song is acoustic, but mostly this is just in-your-face blitzkrieg. .................................................. The Oxford, MS, band dubbed a "Band To Watch" by Stereogum and the "best edge-of-your-seat energy since The Arcade Fire" by Paste -- have crafted their strongest statement to date with The Cradle, a 10-song album that focuses the band's wild-eyed, textured, standing at the edge of the world rock. Soap&Skin - Lovetune For Vacuum (PIAS) .................................................. Few musical discoveries in recent years have been as staggering as that of Soap&Skin, aka Anja Plaschg. The sheer force this twenty-year-old artist injects into her compositions almost defies belief, her songs consuming every last drop of her with no regard for peace. At other times the 14 deeply melancholic piano compositions, plus a cover version of Franz Schubert’s Im Dorfe’ that make up her debut album sometimes resemble crackling electronica under her unique vocals, which oscillate between a whisper and a scream. All of the songs, however, are drenched in Plaschg's beauty and grace. Dirty Heads - Any Port In A Storm (Fontana) .................................................. Dirty Heads represent a lifestyle, both musically and emotionally. It’s a lifestyle that is felt and adopted by fans of reggae, ska, and hip hop. It’s about good times, summer, fun with your friends and generally the rally cry of youth, which is all about postponing the inevitable responsibilities of adulthood for one more party. Dirty Heads pulls from a wide range of influences including rock, vintage reggae, underground hip-hop, skate punk lyrics, and weaves them together seamlessly to create a sound that is both familiar, yet unique unto themselves. !!! - Strange Weather, Isn’t It? (Warp) ..................................................
