UPDATE on the CAN-O-WORMS Rock & Roll Weekend, the 2-day music shebang we're helping throw together on Oct 1 & 2: first the bad news, the Yolks WON'T be playing, they had to cancel. It is sad, yes. There is a BIG BUT(T) however, because we're happy to announce not one (!) but two (!!) additions. Merry-Olde-England's own Proto-Idiot (on hiatus from the Hipshakes) and FLIGHT from Mississippi (Hozac & Kill Shaman records) have both been added to the Saturday Oct. 2 show at The Bishop, AND Bloomington's own commie surf punks Moscow Moscow Moscow will now be playing here in the store earlier that evening. That's what? 15 bands now? I've lost count. Still only $10 for the whole thing ($8 for Friday and $5 for Saturday if you prefer). Tickets available at Landlocked and the BCT box office. Check here for full(er) details: http://canoworms.tumblr.com/ .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 9/21/2010 .................................................. Black Math - Phantom Power LP (Permanent) .................................................. WFMU aptly described Black Math's debut LP from 2009 as "Dark-wave buried in tape hiss, with grinding synth, electric cello, and drum machine. The three piece lists Depeche Mode and Big Black as influences, but they're not straight up 80s." The band will also tell you that Siouxsie and the Banshees are a big influence, but Black Math has a completely compelling, catchy, dark and mysterious sound all their own. Fans of Joy Division, Tubeway Army, early Depeche Mode and OMD, and/or more contemporary stuff like Blank Dogs and Gary War will definitely dig the songs on this LP. We have a small number of their first LP, too. Cee-Lo Green - F**K You (Elektra) .................................................. Katy Perry, move over. The song of the summer/year has arrived. Cee Lo Green is a genius. With soul to spare. Don't let the title make you think that this a novelty song as it's anything but. Think of Smokey Robinson or The Four Tops with a case of serious attitude in an homage to Motown classic hits. A classic funk ode to a gold digging ex-flame. Cee Lo makes the anger of a jilted lover sizzle with his incredible range. The return of the CD single? Probably not, but its only $2 and if you return with the voucher inside to buy his full length album in December you get those $2 off. Neat. Matt Costa - Mobile Chateau (Brushfire) .................................................. In Matt Costa's world, the only constant is change. Every album is a chance for him to push boundaries, explore uncharted waters, and try something new. Never has this been more apparent than on his stunning 3rd album. Mining his longtime love for 60s psychedelic superheroes like Donovan, 13th Floor Elevators, the Zombies, the Electric Prunes, and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Mobile Chateau is a bold step forward into the kaleidoscope beyond. "I've always been drawn to that sound," Costa reveals. "I've been hearing songs like these in my head for my whole life and Mobile Chateau is the closest I've gotten to getting those songs out of my head and onto a record." Free bonus 7" with purchase! Flying Lotus - Pattern + Grid World EP (Warp) .................................................. New EP from Steven Ellison (AKA Flying Lotus). While the LP Cosmogramma was high in concept and wide in musical collaboration, Pattern + Grid World pulls the focus back to he and his machines. These machines are speaking from the go, as "Clay" introduces itself in a fog of synth and vocoder and gives way to one of the many surprises here, the schizophrenic ping-ponging electro of "Kill Your Co-Workers". Drenched in alternating melodies, it's a synthetic counterpart to the grand string and harp arrangements of Cosmogramma. Michael Franti & Spearhead - The Sound of Sunshine (Capitol) .................................................. The Sound Of Sunshine - the inspired and inspiring new album by Michael Franti And Spearhead - is a kind of musical sun shower, a bright, beautiful and often buoyant song cycle created to bring all kinds of listeners a sense of hope during rough and rainy times for so many in our world. In the mid-90s, Franti first formed Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he's found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Live at Bluebird on October 20th! Gentleman Jesse - She's a Trap 7" (Douchemaster) .................................................. These two tracks are a couple of teasers for what we truly believe is going to be an incredible rock n roll LP. Vintage Jesse RNR with "She's a Trap." He slows it down a bit on the B side with "I Won't Say Goodbye." Look for him in your city soon as he is currently touring his ass off. The Hundred in the Hands - s/t (Warp) .................................................. Time Out NY says "The Hundred in the Hands music springs from that sliver of the early 80s in which pop was personal, arty and potentially angry," while Brooklyn Vegan calls their EP "a bit post-punky, a bit shoegaze-y but sounds like now. And you can dance to it." An album of deceptively complex pop songs which hark back to the dance music of NYC's storied underground. Where their recent EP feels like a summertime pop dream, THITH's album conjures the spirit of downtown's mutant disco scene as made legendary by clubs like the Paradise Garage. Margot and the Nuclears So & Sos - Buzzard (Mariel) .................................................. Margot and the Nuclear So and So's formed in Indianapolis, IN in 2006. The band quickly gained a strong following, and after heavy US touring, Artemis Records signed the band to release "The Dust of Retreat." Margot released their sophomore record on Epic Records, with whom they signed in 2007. Animal! was released in 2008 amidst band/label controversy; two albums were actually released, Animal! was the band's track listing, and Not Animal was the label's. With 2010's Buzzard, Margot brings a more aggressive and streamlined sound. Maximum Balloon - s/t (Interscope) .................................................. David Sitek would be content enough if he were just one of the five guys in TV On The Radio. In a parallel life, Sitek would be equally content if he were just employed as a celebrated producer. Behind the boards, he's helped amplify the talents of bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, The Oh Sees, Scarlett Johansson and Holly Miranda. Not quite a solo album and not quite a side-project, Maximum Balloon features Sitek's beat-making, songwriting and collaborative production skills all at once, authored with different singers he calls, "his favorite voices in the world." Nobunny - First Blood (Goner) .................................................. America's favorite loopily leporine rock n roller is back. The melodious masked man kicks it off with "Ain't It a Shame," a bittersweet tale of a rocky romance in which Nobunny's lover has no choice but to endure his frequent indiscretions. He's just that damned charming. "Blow Dumb" is a Velvet-y tribute to all the things that make life worth livin'--"smokin' Copenhagen," make-out sessions and "burger breaks." In fact, First Blood never overstays its welcome and lasts about as long as a particularly adventurous mid-party burger run. Nobunny is so happy, he makes the 1910 Fruitgum Co sound like Joy Division. In under half an hour, Nobunny goes through every worthy rock 'n' roll subgenre- bubblegum pop, garage, rockabilly and psych- and still beautifully articulates every single human emotion with ease. The Roots & John Legend - Wake Up! (Columbia) .................................................. Musical powerhouses John Legend & The Roots present Wake Up!, eleven profoundly evocative songs pulled from the soulful music of the 60s & 70s all with an underlying theme of awareness, engagement and consciousness. The album is highlighted with familiar tracks like "Little Ghetto Boy" by Donny Hathaway mixed with more obscure selections like Baby Huey and the Babysitters' "Hard Times". Wake Up! also includes one original composition, John Legend's "Shine," which is featured in the upcoming documentary Waiting For Superman. Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (Young God) .................................................. After years of pursuing Angels of Light and recording and producing a diverse roster of artists for his Young God label, Michael Gira has reconvened his legendary group Swans. As he says: "This is not a reunion. It's not some dumb-ass nostalgia act. It is not repeating the past. After 5 Angels of Light LPs, I need a way to move forward, in a new direction, and it just so happens that revivifying the idea of Swans allows me to do that." This album is as powerful and diverse as anything Gira's ever done. Also available as deluxe-2CD version containing an extra 30+ minutes of music and different artwork. Torche - Songs for Singles (Hydra Head) .................................................. Songs for Singles, Torche's new addition to a 6 year stretch of well-deserved lionization within the world of metal, is a super solid collection of doom and/or sludge pop in the format that they helped pioneer and make their own. VA - Bored to Death OST (Water Tower) .................................................. Music from the original HBO series, including M.Ward w/ Zooey Deschanel, Dan Auerbach, TV On The Radio, Freelance Whales, Kaiser Cartel, Lykke li, Explorers Club, Andrew Bird, Young Marble Giants, The Real Tuesday Weld and many more! .................................................. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) .................................................. The Oxford, MS, band dubbed a "Band To Watch" by Stereogum and the "best edge-of-your-seat energy since The Arcade Fire" by Paste -- have crafted their strongest statement to date with The Cradle, a 10-song album that focuses the band's wild-eyed, textured, standing at the edge of the world rock. Soap&Skin - Lovetune For Vacuum (PIAS) .................................................. Few musical discoveries in recent years have been as staggering as that of Soap&Skin, aka Anja Plaschg. The sheer force this twenty-year-old artist injects into her compositions almost defies belief, her songs consuming every last drop of her with no regard for peace. At other times the 14 deeply melancholic piano compositions, plus a cover version of Franz Schubert’s Im Dorfe’ that make up her debut album sometimes resemble crackling electronica under her unique vocals, which oscillate between a whisper and a scream. All of the songs, however, are drenched in Plaschg's beauty and grace. Dirty Heads - Any Port In A Storm (Fontana) .................................................. Dirty Heads represent a lifestyle, both musically and emotionally. It’s a lifestyle that is felt and adopted by fans of reggae, ska, and hip hop. It’s about good times, summer, fun with your friends and generally the rally cry of youth, which is all about postponing the inevitable responsibilities of adulthood for one more party. Dirty Heads pulls from a wide range of influences including rock, vintage reggae, underground hip-hop, skate punk lyrics, and weaves them together seamlessly to create a sound that is both familiar, yet unique unto themselves. !!! - Strange Weather, Isn’t It? (Warp) .................................................. Following in the footsteps of artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Depeche Mode, !!! traveled to Berlin to produce a record that is simultaneously brooding and somehow their poppiest, most immediate record yet. Strange Weather, Isn’t It? is filled with deep, galvanizing grooves that protrude from a dark undercurrent, resulting in an album that perfectly captures the aura of Berlin while still retaining accessibility on the dance floor. Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses - Junky Star (Lost Highway) .................................................. Produced by T Bone Burnett, Junky Star is the new album from acclaimed singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses. Bingham recently won the Oscar and Golden Globe for “The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart)”, which he co-wrote with Burnett. All 12 songs on Junky Star were written by Bingham and range from Sticky Fingers-era Stones (“Depression”), to introspective confessionals (“Hallelujah), to narratives with vivid imagery (“The Poet”). -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
