Thanks to all who came out to any of the Can-O-Worms shows this past weekend. The whole thing was a big success, and by "big success" I mean we lost only a little bit of money and everyone seemed to have a good time. Seeing the Vulgar Boatmen play "The Midwest Can Be Alright" while people 10 years older than me and 10 years younger than me danced and sang along... well, it made the whole thing worthwhile. Brought a tear to my eye in fact. Extra special thanks to our venues, the Bishop and the Lodge, to Peter Shaw for making rad t-shirts, Mason Williams for DJing, Pete Schreiner for MCing, to Greek's Pizza for the pie hook up, to everyone who helped work the door Friday night, to everyone who lent gear or transportation, and especially to all the bands. Let's do it again next year! - Jason (PS - Want a Can O'Worms Shirt? Stop in and buy one of the last remaining ones while they last!) New Music Happy Hour is TONIGHT at The Bishop (123 S. Hurry! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/5/2010 .................................................. Avett Brothers - Live, Volume 3 (American) .................................................. This electric performance was recorded on August 8, 2009 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC. A special thrill for the band after seeing artists like Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Queen and Bob Dylan grace this same stage. Live, Volume 3 features material culled from their decade-long career including their most recent album I and Love and You. The Live, Volume 3 CD is comprised of a selection of songs from the Charlotte performance. The DVD will include documentary-style episodes, interspersed with interviews from the band and fans in attendance as well as the show. Cheap Time - Fantastic Explanations (In the Red) .................................................. Some people didn't know what to make of Cheap Time's debut album from 2008. Too glamtastic and bubblegum for the garage purists and too raw for indie rockers. Cheap Time's new album, proves that they are capable of still further artistic leaps. Jeffrey Novak soaks up his influences and spits out new songs with more complex structures and melodies than ever before. The recording sessions have also become something of legend- tracking for the album ended abruptly after engineer Mike McHugh suffered a breakdown and kicked the band out of the studio at gunpoint. Once the tapes were retrieved over a month later, Earle Mankey (ex-Sparks member and producer of the Quick's Mondo Deco and The Runaways' Queens of Noise) was brought in to mix the final album, which turned out to be a perfect match! Clinic - Bubblegum (Domino) .................................................. 'Bubblegum', the mind-blowing sixth album from Clinic, is exactly 40 minutes long. Usually, long-players by this most extraordinary British band clock in at a clipped half-hour. That makes an extra 33% of murky psychedelic/punk excellence. But there's a little more to it than that. This one comes from another planet, baby. "Bubblegum" is a different bag of butternut squash. On one listen, it feels instantly warmer, lusher, less uptight. It glows like dusk in a balmy Indian Summer. Fistful of Mercy - As I Call You Down (Vagrant) .................................................. Debut from this trio featuring Ben Harper, Dhani Harrison (George's son) and Joseph Arthur. Ben Harper is no stranger to the music world. Having met Dhani while skating, the two were unaware of each other's background for months. Once realized, collaborating seemed to make perfect sense and thus Fistful Of Mercy was formed instantly. Written, produced and recorded in Harper's studio, its comprised of 9 songs complete with soulful harmonies and blues-infused folk guitar seamlessly blended with an indie rock backbone. As I Call You Down effortlessly crosses through genre defining borders and is sure to please fans of both Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison's previous work, while welcoming new listeners with open arms. Donavon Frankenreiter - Glow (Liquid Tambourine) .................................................. When Donavon Frankenreiter was 10 years old, he got his first surfboard. Six years later, he picked up his first guitar. It was the beginning of a wildly creative journey: His improvisational twin obsessions have carried him around the globe and into his fans' hearts. As Frankenreiter prepares to release his fourth album, Glow, this fall, the singer/ songwriter/pro surfer admits he still thrives on simply taking the plunge. The album's 10 tracks are the perfect antidote to trying times: warm, organic, and overwhelmingly hopeful. Fran Healy - Wreckorder (Ryko) .................................................. The debut solo album from the lead singer and main songwriter of acclaimed Scottish rock band Travis. The album is the work of a quintessential pop songwriter. Artists such as Chris Martin (Coldplay) and Noel Gallagher (Oasis) have cited Healy's sophisticated and atmospheric arrangements as a major influence on their own sound. The 10 tracks are as exceptionally literate as they are emotionally challenging. The collection of songs include a duet with Neko Case, Paul McCartney on bass for "As It Comes" and the guitar-rich first single, "Buttercups". Alain Johannes - Spark (Ipecac) .................................................. A heartfelt, honest and hypnotic collection of songs that Alain penned to commemorate his late wife and creative partner, Natasha Shneider. Alain plays like his soul depends on it and the songs breathe organically. From co-founding Eleven with Natasha to collaborating with everyone from Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures to Chris Cornell and Mark Lanegan, Alain remains a prolific force. QOTSA/Crooked Vultures frontman Joshua Homme gave the album a glowing send-up: "Alain's record is the total embodiment of what the label stands for the war against endorsing mediocrity and the uncensored attempt to take a leap off the musical cliff. Spark is a stunning examination of figuring out what you do when someone's gone, and it's utterly breathtaking." Tim Kasher - Game of Monogamy (Saddle Creek) .................................................. Late last fall Tim Kasher went north for the winter after nearly a year of touring in support of Cursive's 2009 release Mama, I'm Swollen. Leaving sunny Los Angeles, it was in the frosty valley of Whitefish, MT nestled next to Big Mountain and Glacier National Park that he set about writing and recording his debut solo album, The Game Of Monogamy. John Lennon - [CD reissues] (EMI) .................................................. Released to coincide with what would have been his 70th birthday - 8 of John's powerful solo albums completely digitally remastered from his original mixes. Plus: "Power To The People: The Hits" gathers 15 of Lennon's most popular songs, digitally remastered and restored to John's original audio mixes. The Deluxe CD+DVD edition includes a bonus DVD that contains the promo videos for all the tracks featured on the CD. The 2CD Double Fantasy album includes a never before released "Stripped Down" version produced by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas. On sale for TWO WEEKS only! A boxed set 11CD version also available for special order only (Includes 2CDs of home demos, 65pg book, Lennon print, essays and box). Raul Malo - Sinners & Saints (Fantasy) .................................................. The most intimate, honest and complex album Raul Malo has made in an already distinguished career. One hears in it a lifetime's journey, from the singer-songwriter's youth in Cuban neighborhoods of Miami through his years as one of the most intriguing talents in the Americana scene with The Mavericks. Rooted in Malo's lifelong connection to Latin music but infused with his wide-ranging love of country, blues, jazz and vintage rock 'n' roll, it combines sonic ingenuity with emotional sincerity. Malo finished the album with the help of Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornado veteran Augie Meyers on the Vox Continental organ and, on the song "Superstar," guitarist Shawn Sahm, Sir Douglas' son. And hotshot accordionist Michael Guerra, known for his work with the Tex-Mex Experience, lent further Tejas authenticity to the sound. Solar Bears - She Was Colored In (Planet Mu) .................................................. Hailing from Ireland, Solar Bears are the sole producers and musicians on the group's debut. A very pleasant experience, crossing untangled lines between IDM, folktronica, pastoral kosmische and soundtracky synth music. Their music calls to mind everyone from Emeralds and Boards of Canada to Bibio or Morricone, but with an unpretentiousness, naive, and intuitive feel to their melodic arrangements. Recommended! Marnie Stern - s/t (Kill Rock Stars) .................................................. Birthed during a challenging period in her life, the s/t Marnie Stern is a compendium of life stories both bitter and sweet. From ballads to her signature pop guitar-tapping style, Stern and long-time co-conspirator Zach Hill (Hella) have churned out an enormous album that will further cement Stern as a rising star in today's progressive music landscape. Stern also enlists the bass talents of psych-rock musician Matthew Flegel (of the band Women) and up-and-coming mixer Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Funeral Party) resulting in Stern stepping up her sonic game and revealing a mature and more focused side of herself. Tamaryn - The Waves (Mexican Summer) .................................................. Following a spate of EPs and singles comes the debut album by Tamaryn, entitled The Waves. These nine songs combine driving pop and lush balladry with layered, guitar-driven ethereal atmospheres, against which Tamaryn's voice, languid and restrained, melts against its surface. The Waves is a masterful collision of hypnotic psychedelia and bittersweet dream pop. Nu-gazer, indeed. Tricky - Mixed Race (Domino) .................................................. There's a wealth of knowledge distilled within the music as Tricky approaches 20 years of recording. Musically his production work takes influences from UK, Jamaica, the US, North Africa and French music. The album is an intense lyrical journey with temptation, reflection, mischief and misbehavior. "Every album is a learning experience and this is concentrated music, there's no dilution" said Tricky of his new collection, "I've spent my life going between cultures; Mixed Race is about that in a very direct way." Corin Tucker Band - 1,000 Years (Kill Rock Stars) .................................................. The new record began with the same surprise turn that started Corin Tucker's career back in 1991, ended Sleater-Kinney's 11-year year run in 2006 and inspired the punk-feminist rocker to redefine herself as a stay-at-home mom. Tucker was performing at a benefit show in her hometown of Portland, airing out a couple of new songs. Another benefit and another pair of unheard tunes followed a few weeks later. The reaction from friends, fans and perfect strangers was unanimous. Cue the wrenching rhythms and hard-angle melodies, the slashing guitars and wildly passionate vocals. Only now the hard edges come nestled in lush weaves of acoustic guitars, keyboards, interlocking percussion, even cellos and violins. VA - Ninja Tune XX Vols 1 & 2 (Ninja Tune) .................................................. Ninja Tune is 20 years old and what they've put together to celebrate this anniversary is what they're calling a futurespective. Featuring new exclusive tracks and remixes, not just from Ninja artists, but from some of the biggest names in electronic music. Part 1 includes tracks from Two Fingers and many more new and exclusive tracks from the likes of Zomby, Dorian Concept, Roots Manuva, The Bug, to name but a few. Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Wilderness Heart is packed with succinct rock songs that pulse and pound with startling precision: it pummels you and you ask for more. "It's our most metal and most folk oriented record so far," songwriter Stephen McBean says. "I'm not gonna say it's our best record or the album that we always dreamt of making 'cause that's what everyone says. It's all about where we were at the time the machines were rolling." VA - The Music Of DC Comics: 75th Annv Collection (Fontana) .................................................. DC Comics has produced a number of amazing books, television series, cartoons and more over the last 75 years. Never before have the songs from these shows been collected in one place. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (4AD) .................................................. Halcyon Digest is Deerhunter's fourth album and their first to be released on 4AD worldwide. Terror - Keepers of the Faith (Caroline) .................................................. Terror have cemented their status in great stone letters as guardians of old school hardcore ethics while winning the pit fervor of the new generation of metal and hardcore fans. Ignoring current musical trends, the L.A. based band have stuck to their guns playing aggressive, no frills, breakneck hardcore like The Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front before them.
