It's not every day that we see a new full-length from Antony & the Johnsons, or Sufjan Stevens. But today we get both! It's easy to get excited about new releases from two artists with such celebrated catalogs - and ties to Bloomington! So, we want to do something special to highlight the records that brought us to where we are now: A Sufjan and Antony back catalog on sale! Antony's Self-Titled, I Am a Bird Now and Crying Light CDs and Sufjan's Enjoy Your Rabbit, Michigan, Illinois and Avalanche CDs, all for 10 bucks! Get the new albums and fill in the back catalog, too! Hey Jackass! Do you want a FREE PASS to see the new Jackass 3D movie? We have em. This special sneak preview is Thursday at 10pm at the west side theater. Stop in and tell us why you are a jackass and we'll give you one! Limited to the first dozen or so people, so don't hesitate! All physical copies of Belle & Sebastian's new album, Write About Love (out today!) will include a unique code. When you get the album, you can head over to their website to enter it and write 300 words about "love, in any sense of the word." The band will pick a winner. If that's you, frontman Stuart Murdoch will fly out to wherever you live, spend an afternoon with you, and then write and record a song all about you. B&S will then release that song on an exclusive 7" in 2011. Wow! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/12/2010 .................................................. Antony & the Johnsons - Swanlights (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Antony and the Johnsons will release their new album, "Swanlights", on October 12th in the US via Secretly Canadian. Abrams Image will simultaneously release a special edition of "Swanlights" which will include the CD inside a 144-page art book containing Antony's paintings, collages, photography and writing. The album only version of "Swanlights" on Secretly Canadian will also include the song "Fletta", a duet with Bjork. The album and book are a continuation of Antony's work exploring environmental issues and his connection to the natural world. Badly Drawn Boy - Its What I'm Thinking: Photographing Snowflakes (The End) .................................................. Badly Drawn Boy's new album is part of a trilogy called It's What I'm Thinking and the subheading of the first album is Photographing SnoMakes. "I was having a drink one night with some friends and someone said 'What do you think is the hardest job ever?"' explains Gough, "and to me it's got to be photographing snowflakes. lt's impossible. People do it but l've no idea how they do it." lt's also an analogy for what Gough wants to achieve with this trilogy, grabbing those moments or songs that come from nowhere and capturing the moment. Photographing snowflakes. Belle & Sebastian - Write About Love (Matador) .................................................. Back after a 5-year hiatus doing solo projects, soundtracks and more, Glasgow's beloved B&S have returned with one of their finest albums. Marrying the intimacy of early works like Sinister and Tigermilk with the production values of their more recent work, Write About Love is a varied, captivating and occasionally disturbing trawl through the mind of Stuart Murdoch and his colleagues. The album features duets with Norah Jones and actress Carey Mulligan (An Education). Free 7inch with purchase! Jane Birkin - Di Doo Dah (Light in the Attic) .................................................. The first true solo album from British born actress, model, singer and French national treasure, Jane Birkin. Emerging as a creative and beatific force in London's Swinging 60s, she met Serge Gainsbourg in 1968 on the film set of Slogan and birthed one of the most fantastic creative collaborations the world has ever known. After the 1969 duet album Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus and the landmark L'Histoire De Melody Nelson, Jane was ready for her own namesake debut. Di Doo Dah sees Birkin, Gainsbourg, and co-conspirator Jean-Claude Vannier meld Jane's fragile vocals with Jazz, Rock, and lush orchestral textures: a perfect album for living and loving. The Fresh & Onlys - Play it Strange (In the Red) .................................................. After two albums (on Castle Face and Woodsist) and too many singles and EPs to count, The Fresh & Onlys deliver their most solid outing yet. Recorded by studio whiz Tim Green during an 8-day session, Play It Strange marks the band's first recording in an actual studio. On 2-inch analog tape! The results are nothing short of incredible. For those unfamiliar with The Fresh & Onlys, their sound draws from jangly psychedelia, Morricone-style Western twang, dark vibes a la Bad Seeds / Gun Club, melodic 60s sunshine pop and a hint of garage rock swagger. While this disparate list may look strange on paper, it makes perfect sense when you hear it. The sound of a band that has ingested a wide range of rock influences from nearly every genre and sub-genre to come up with something fresh and immensely enjoyable. The Moondoggies - Tidelands (Hardly Art) .................................................. Though they sprang from Seattle's vibrant roots music scene, the Moondoggies are a band schooled in much more than the common touch-stones of the current Americana movement; there is no intention of treading water here. Although full-throated harmonies are still central to the band's sound, the ten selections that comprise Tidelands embrace a wider range of timbres and dynamics than their 2008 debut. Stylistically, this sophomore set is a strong creative leap forward for the young band. Produced by the band and Erik Blood, with additional production input from Phil Ek and Kurt Bloch. Old 97s - Grand Theatre Volume One (New West) .................................................. The four Texans return with an explosive new album that captures the sound their fans treasure while excitingly veering their songwriting and production into new areas. The result is the aurally thrilling The Grand Theatre Volume One. Written primarily by frontman Rhett Miller while on tour in the UK, Miller offers up his wry character studies and charming twists on phrases. The 97s sound is expertly rounded out by band members: Murry Hammond, Ken Bethea and Philip Peeples. The Orb w/ David Gilmour - Metallic Spheres (Columbia) .................................................. Metallic Spheres is a collaboration between David Gilmour, the voice and guitar of Pink Floyd, and The Orb, the renowned British ambient/house collective. Together, they created a two-part sonic mixture in a range of styles combining David's unique guitars and The Orb's crafted sound manipulations. Pena - s/t (Secret Stash) .................................................. In April of 2010, Secret Stash Records traveled to Lima, Peru to record Afro Peruvian music. With a portable recording studio, an interpreter, and no preplanned engagements or sessions they hit the streets. Within one week's time they put together a band they called Pena and recorded over 50 tracks. The cast of musicians was a revolving door of sorts. This release highlights the best recordings from those sessions. In addition to hours of audio recording, they filmed the entire adventure in HD. This CD+DVD package contains interviews, live performances, session footage and more. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz (Asthmatic Kitty) .................................................. The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan's first collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. While the sounds on this record are distinctly "artificial" (drums machines and analog synths reign supreme), the proclamations of the songs are unabashedly visceral, sung loudly, with a backdrop of insistent orchestration. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, primary and explicit than anything he has done before, incorporating themes that are neither historical nor civic, but rather personal and primal. Buy it first week and enter to win a pair of guest passes to Sufjan's concert in Indianapolis on November 4th! Kelley Stoltz - To Dreamers (Sub Pop) .................................................. While Kelley Stoltz's nigh-religious reverence for all things Beatles, Beach Boys and Kinks has been at the fore on recent albums Below the Branches and Circular Sounds, his new album, To Dreamers, blends a bit more post-punk abandon into its layered everyman pop. Tasteful horn adornments blow against tom-tom beats and 12-string guitars meet reverbed mellotrons, under Stoltz's warm vocals. Kelley, now a veritable godfather to the burgeoning San Francisco under/over-ground (folks like Thee Oh Sees, Sonny & the Sunsets, The Fresh & Onlys), has blazed a path since the late 90s as a home-recording guru and multi-instrumentalist. Suuns - Zeroes QC (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Montreal's Suuns possess a rare trait in rock music:restraint. They use it like an instrument, which makes their debut full-length Zeroes QC as unsettling as it is wonderfully exasperating. It's immediately apparent in album opener "Armed for Peace," a track that starts off like a robot breaking down in a hot desert; the song's mechanic beat plods like iron-shoed footsteps as the melody of a wheezing synth mirrors the crackling sound of old transistors and circuitry being cooked in the sun. It's deceptively lulling, the tension almost unnoticeably wrenching up and up until the track unexpectedly opens into a barrage of nose-diving guitar riffs and crashing drums. Yann Tiersen - Dust Lane (Anti) .................................................. Already a major performer in his native France and throughout Europe, classical trained composer Yann Tiersen is best known in the US for his arthouse hit film soundtracks Amelie and Goodbye Lenin. "Dust Lane", Tiersen's official Anti and US debut, is a cinematic orchestral pop record that recalls the swagger of classic Serge Gainsbourg, the bravura of early Eno and the faded music-hall grandeur of Brits like Pulp and Divine Comedy as it veers from sunny folk-inspired songs to full choir workouts. Wolf People - Steeple (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Steeple is the first album proper from Wolf People and represents the emergence of a fully fledged band from the fragmented, haunted bedroom meanderings of their Tidings singles compilation, released earlier this year. Recorded in a converted chicken barn on the grounds of a 17th century Welsh mansion, Steeple takes on a heavier sound while maintaining the arabesque electric guitars, groove-laden drums and ethereal vocals that characterized its predecessor. Zola Jesus - Valusia EP (Sacred Bones) .................................................. Gone are the morose, gothic lo-vibes and in their place is an airy almost dance track that still sounds as true to form as other endeavor Danilova has ever undertaken. An old hit and recent show-stopper live track, "Seatalk" has been re-recorded as well and this new well mic'd version is breathtakingly good. There will be a video coming for that soon too. Closer, "Lightsick" is a straight piano ballad. Not synth, real piano. And for her darker fans, "Tower" still has that Mad Maxian apocalypse creep we know and love. .................................................. Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Wilderness Heart is packed with succinct rock songs that pulse and pound with startling precision: it pummels you and you ask for more. "It's our most metal and most folk oriented record so far," songwriter Stephen McBean says. "I'm not gonna say it's our best record or the album that we always dreamt of making 'cause that's what everyone says. It's all about where we were at the time the machines were rolling." VA - The Music Of DC Comics: 75th Annv Collection (Fontana) .................................................. DC Comics has produced a number of amazing books, television series, cartoons and more over the last 75 years. Never before have the songs from these shows been collected in one place. Well, now they have. It starts in 1941, with the theme to the classic Fleischer Superman cartoons and moves through the years, with 21 of the 31 tracks available for the first time ever. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (4AD) .................................................. Halcyon Digest is Deerhunter's fourth album and their first to be released on 4AD worldwide. The album was recorded at Chase Park Transduction Studios with the band self-producing and Ben Allen enlisted to mix it (he also worked on Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion). Terror - Keepers of the Faith (Caroline) .................................................. Terror have cemented their status in great stone letters as guardians of old school hardcore ethics while winning the pit fervor of the new generation of metal and hardcore fans.
