.................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/2/2010 .................................................. The Autumn Defense - Once Around (Yep Roc) .................................................. By day, John Stirratt and Pat Sansone are members of rock standard-bearers Wilco, but for over a decade the pair have fronted passion project The Autumn Defense. Once Around is the group's 4th album and finds the band's steady, creative ease percolating directly into its music. The album's tracks are plaintive but don't pander and their melodies unfurl effortlessly while also unmistakably setting the hook, not to be easily shaken. Stirratt and Sansone mine 70s AM gold and drape it in their decidedly modern sensibilities, resulting in an album that is fresh yet decidedly familiar. Elvis Costello - National Ransom (Hear) .................................................. On National Ransom Elvis Costello once again teams up with Grammy award winning producer T Bone Burnett and engineer Michael Pierante. Recorded in 11 days between LA and Nashville, Elvis is joined by all the members of the Imposters and Sugarcanes along with special guests Vince Gill, Marc Ribot, Buddy Miller and Leon Russell. All of these songs are newly composed by Costello with the exception of "I Lost You," co-written with Jim Lauderdale and "All These Strangers," for which Costello and T Bone Burnett collaborated on the lyrics. Costello and Burnett also provide the lyrics for "My Lovely Jezebel," a Leon Russell rock and roll tune. Destroyer - Archer on the Beach 12" (Merge) .................................................. Destroyer's limited-edition 12" "Archer on the Beach" b/w "Grief Point" is inspired by the music of Kranky recording artists Tim Hecker and Loscil and achieved through their full collaboration. "Archer on the Beach" is a meditation on grappling with the 20th century in one's own special way and with style, this time through singing quietly, through repetition, and through leaving lots of space between words, as well as finally learning to love crowds and nature. "Grief Point" is the first recording Bejar made after deciding never to record again. Limited edition of 1000 copies. Brian Eno - Small Craft on a Milk Sea (Warp) .................................................. The work in this collection is a result of an occasional collaboration between Eno, Leo Abrahams and Jon Hopkins. The other two are gifted young composers whose work is intimately connected to the possibilities and freedoms of electronic music. Over the last few years we've worked together several times, enjoying exploring the huge new sonic territories now available to musicians. Mostly the pieces on this album resulted not from 'composition' in the classical sense, but from improvisation. The improvisations are not attempts to end up with a song, but rather with a landscape, a feeling of a place and perhaps the suggestion of an event. As they stand, they are the mirror-image of silent movies - sound-only movies. Bryan Ferry - Olympia (Astralwerks) .................................................. The legendary Bryan Ferry returns with his suave and sophisticated debut on Astralwerks. The album features musical contributions from Nile Rodgers, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Groove Armada, Scissor Sisters, Marcus Miller, Flea, Mani (Primal Scream, ex Stone Roses) and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. Olympia sees Bryan Ferry reunite on record with members of Roxy Music, including Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Mackay. This is the first album to reunite them since Roxy Music's seminal album For Your Pleasure in 1973! Syl Johnson - Complete Mythology 6LP+4CD Box (Numero Group) .................................................. 81 track, 6LP+4CD box (both formats included) contains re-mastered versions of no less than 28 singles from the Twinight, Federal, Cha-Cha, Tmp-Ting, Special Agent, and Zachron labels, facsimiles of the Dresses Too Short and Is It Because I'm Black albums, ten previously unreleased tracks and detailed track by track notes from acclaimed music historian Bill Dahl. The 52 page booklet contains a 35,000 word essay, scores of previously unpublished photos, a sampling index, and complete discography all presented in a lavish hard bound box. Incredible! Matt & Kim - Sidewalks (Fader) .................................................. Brooklyn's own Matt & Kim, they of the strip-off-all-your-clothes in Times Square, sweaty smiley show, keyboard and drums duo variety, present their 3rd album. This time the duo recorded in a real studio in Atlanta, with producer Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective). Sidewalks finds Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino keeping the party going and the people moving, and having a "grand" time doing it (indie rock joke). FREE bonus 7inch while they last! Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run [deluxe reissue] (Hear) .................................................. Band on the Run should have been a disaster. Two of Wings original members quit in a huff just before its production. The whimsical decision to record in Lagos, Nigeria, became a nightmare when McCartney and company found themselves in a decaying studio, then had many of the project's demos stolen by armed bandits. Despite these hardships- perhaps because of them- Band on the Run remains the most focused and consistently satisfying record of McCartney's wildly uneven post-Beatles career. 3 disc (2CD + DVD) set features 9 bonus tracks (including "Helen Wheels"), rare footage of the McCartneys in Lagos and behind-the-scenes at the cover shoot, original Band on the Run promotional video clips, the One Hand Clapping television special (highlighted by studio performances filmed at Abbey Road in 1974) all with beautifully enhanced packaging. Single CD and LP also available. Mini Mansions - s/t (Ipecac) .................................................. If pure sound had the capability to project images on a blank wall, Mini Mansions would be worthy projectionists. On a break from Queens of the Stone Age, Michael Shuman melded heads and locked arms with longtime friends Tyler Parkford and Zach Dawes in a dusty room in the San Fernando Valley. Here, they began a collaborative sŽance out of which birthed Mini Mansions in January of 2009. Though their triangle is usually confined to piano, bass, and a cocktail drum kit, the LA based trio generates a Technicolor spectrum of sound drawn from the baroque, gothic, psychedelic, and cinematic realms. Their debut selftitled release, due out this fall via Rekords Rekords, curtseys to the past, bows to the present, and foreshadows a progressively more abstract future. Elliott Smith - An Introduction to... (Kill Rock Stars) .................................................. This album features fourteen tracks compiled from all seven of Elliott Smith's albums (including his albums on Geffen): Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, Either/Or, XO, Figure 8, From A Basement on the Hill, and New Moon. An Introduction to... is, as the title suggests, intended as an introduction to one of the greatest songwriters of our era. We hope this will enable new generations to learn about Elliott's music by providing a pathway for people to delve more deeply into his immensely satisfying catalog. VA - Come and Get It: The Best of Apple Records (Apple) .................................................. The first commercially issued multi-artist compilation in the label's history. This 21-track compilation of singles ranges from the folk-rooted tunes of Mary Hopkin and James Taylor, and the energetic rock of Badfinger (also The Iveys) and Jackie Lomax, to the deep soul of Doris Troy and Billy Preston. Come and Get It displays Apple's vibrant years of musical experimentation in full flower, from bona fide hit singles to the cult classics of the catalogue, as represented by brass band The Black Dyke Mills Band, Cajun collective The Sundown Playboys, and more. Hot Chocolate (as 'The Hot Chocolate Band') makes an appearance, as does Ronnie Spector, Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band, Chris Hodge, Brute Force, and others. .................................................. Each album has a review and enables you to listen to the entire album before you buy it. Give 'er a spin! Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz (Asthmatic Kitty) .................................................. The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its extensive use of electronics. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, more primary, and more explicit than anything Sufjan has done before. Antony & The Johnsons - Swanlights (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Swanlights may be Antony's most wide-ranging emotional work to date. Whereas on The Crying Light, Antony paired everything back to its most distilled and essential, on Swanlights the vines have become overgrown and the sound palette has become more exotic, strange percussive elements, John Cale-esque string drones, heavily distorted guitars and symphonic voicings thread the song cycle together. It includes the song "Fletta", a duet with Bjork. Elton John & Leon Russell - The Union (Decca) .................................................. Produced by Oscar and multiple-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, The Union was recorded live in the studio with Elton and Leon on dueling pianos. It features a variety of musical genres from R&B, soul, gospel, country, pop and rock, and includes selections written by Elton and his lifelong lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as the combined incomparable songwriting team encompassing Leon, Elton, Bernie and T Bone. Leon first met Elton in 1970 when he attended Elton's first ever U.S. show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The meeting heralded the beginning of a long friendship and a mutual appreciation between the two artists. After years of being out of touch, the two finally decided to collaborate on The Union. Elvis Costello - National Ransom (Hear) .................................................. In a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Elvis Costello has distinguished himself as one of pop music's most prolific and versatile musicians. His latest work, National Ransom, produced by T Bone Burnett, features all members of The Imposters and The Sugarcanes performing a wide variety of new combos with guests Vince Gill, Marc Ribot, Buddy Miller and Leon Russell. Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (Hear) .................................................. Band On The Run is the first release in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection. Personally supervised by Paul, it has been digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. Originally released in 1973, Band On The Run was Paul McCartney & Wings most successful release. This Grammy Award-winning album featured 3 Top 10 hits and reached the #1 position on Billboard's Top Album Chart.
