This won't last forever... .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/9/2010 .................................................. Bad Books - s/t (Razor & Tie) .................................................. Bad Books was never an intended nor calculated side project of Kevin Devine and Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra. With no agenda or expectations, what was birthed just one week later was Bad Books, a fully realized album encompassing five compositions each from both Devine and Hull, with the members of Manchester Orchestra filling out the sound and the band. In contrast to previous outputs from the two parties, Bad Books cradles a much more noticeable pop aesthetic and energy than either artist has ever showcased before, meshing elements of Elliot Smith and Simon & Garfunkel with Brand New and Silversun Pickups. The Good Ones - Kigali Y Izahabu (Dead Oceans) .................................................. The Good Ones is a trio of Rwandan genocide survivors who play joyous, acoustic love songs written in the ancient local, Kinyarwanda street dialect of their nation's capital, Kigali. Kigali Y' Izahabu is essentially an intimate field recording that even captures the howling and barking of dogs in the background, and it was recorded by two-time Grammy-nominated producer Ian Brennan. Cee-Lo Green - The Lady Killer (Elektra) .................................................. Cee-Lo Green's first solo work in more than six years, sees the endlessly inventive singer continuing to push hip-hop and soul's creative envelope, this time working with a star-studded cast of producers that includes Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse), Jack Splash (Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx), and Fraser T. Smith (Nelly Furtado, James Morrison, Ellie Goulding). Released last month, the blockbuster first single 'F**k You' caused an instant viral commotion, drawing more than 2 million plays in its first 5 days online. The Greenhornes - 4 Stars (WB) .................................................. A lot has happened in the past 8 years, but this is The Greenhornes' first full length LP of new material since 2002's 'Dual Mono.' This new album may be their strongest collection of songs yet. It's diverse yet very concise, from the dark pop of lead single 'Saying Goodbye,' to the bubble glam of 'Song 13,' to 'Cave Drawings' moody psych; it's an eclectic and mature work and very much The Greenhornes own. Jonathan Richman - O Moon, Queen Of Night On Earth (Vapor) .................................................. When Jonathan Richman set out to record songs for new album, the road led him as far flung as Spain and South America. Yet, it was home cooking in San Francisco that yielded the recordings that would become O Moon, Queen of Night on Earth. Featuring Jonathan's longtime collaborator Tommy Larkins on drums, the album reveals a shift in direction for Richman. As the title suggests, this outing finds Richman looking up to the lonely night sky during the wee small hours - when time slows down and everything is as melancholy as it is beautiful. The album artwork acts in kind, with Richman's own paintings suggesting a veil of muted moonlight. Tyvek - Nothing Fits (In the Red) .................................................. Nothing Fits is a scalding collection of amped-up and thrust-out songs that cranks up the energy level far beyond their previous releases and decimates the detractors into the abyss. It's Tyvek at their fiery, screaming best, and if this doesn't curl your eyebrows and your toes simultaneously with excitement, then you might need to settle for something musically akin to hospital food or take another laxative, because this blast of new recordings might just flush out your system to the point of personal emergency. Vollmar / Sleeping Bag - split 7" (Standard) .................................................. A split release between the soft-spoken Vollmar and the newbies Sleeping Bag. As the drummer for several inactive bands, on winter break from school, Dave Segedy was inspired without an outlet. Unaccustomed to melodic instruments, he relied on pop instinct, simply writing and recording what he wanted to listen to. He focused on efficiency and the interaction of the songs. The result is Sleeping Bag. It has been described as being rooted in the 90s, resembling Starflyer 59, with the instrumentation and lift of The Rentals, and the occasional sprawl of Built to Spill. Segedy recruited fellow locals David Woodruff and Lewis Rogers to form his live trio. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Mike Dixon. Wild Orchid Children - Are Alexander Supertramp (Equal Vision) .................................................. Wild Orchid Children have become critic and fan darlings of Seattle with their gritty indie rock meets funk asthestic and powerful live shows. Their 2009 EP Elephants garnered national attention in a wide range of tastemaker publications without the assistance of a label or publicist. The Wild Orchid Children Are Alexander Supertramp is their first full length. Features current and former members of Gatsbys American Dream, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and Forgive Durden. Gary Wilson - Electric Endicott (Western Vinyl) .................................................. In 1977 Gary Wilson released a uniquely bizarre and personal album titled You Think You Really Know Me, full of electro-funk, proto-new wave, noise collage, and avant-garde jazz. Despite the fact that the album's fans included Beck, Questlove from The Roots, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and many others, widespread fame and notoriety eluded Gary Wison until the 2002 re-release. More than the perverted musings of a peeping tom, Gary's music is an honest reflection of ourselves, at least of that part of ourselves that loved our childhood pets more than we loved our parents or that worried if we'd ever make it to second base. Equal parts Prince and Pee Wee Herman, Joe Jackson and Charlie Brown, Gary's songs celebrate our inner ickiness, silliness and grooviness, the romance and randiness of born-losers from anywhere. Robert Wyatt / Atzmon / Stephen - For the Ghosts Within (Domino) .................................................. For The Ghosts Within is a new collaboration between Robert Wyatt, saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and violinist Ros Stephen. A song cycle featuring, along with Wyatt originals, standards such as "Lush Life", "In A Sentimental Mood" and "Round Midnight", For The Ghosts Within places Wyatt's voice (and whistling) amid the seductive drama of string quartet, alto saxophone, and the universal rhythms of the night. Also now available are awesome LP reissues of most of Robert's solo catalog - some now, some more in 2 weeks. VA - Coal Miner's Daughter: Loretta Lynn Tribute (Columbia) .................................................. Loretta Lynn is a true icon of country music. To honor the 50th anniversary of her debut single, a diverse group of artists have come together to pay tribute to her in this collection. Loretta personally selected the artists which include The White Stripes, Lucinda Williams, Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Allison Moorer, Paramore, Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson, and Lee Ann Womack. Each artist personalized their version, recording with their own choice of producer and musicians. .................................................. Each album has a review and enables you to listen to the entire album before you buy it. Give 'er a spin! Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz (Asthmatic Kitty) .................................................. The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its extensive use of electronics. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, more primary, and more explicit than anything Sufjan has done before. Antony & The Johnsons - Swanlights (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Swanlights may be Antony's most wide-ranging emotional work to date. Whereas on The Crying Light, Antony paired everything back to its most distilled and essential, on Swanlights the vines have become overgrown and the sound palette has become more exotic, strange percussive elements, John Cale-esque string drones, heavily distorted guitars and symphonic voicings thread the song cycle together. It includes the song "Fletta", a duet with Bjork. Elton John & Leon Russell - The Union (Decca) .................................................. Produced by Oscar and multiple-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, The Union was recorded live in the studio with Elton and Leon on dueling pianos. It features a variety of musical genres from R&B, soul, gospel, country, pop and rock, and includes selections written by Elton and his lifelong lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as the combined incomparable songwriting team encompassing Leon, Elton, Bernie and T Bone. Leon first met Elton in 1970 when he attended Elton's first ever U.S. show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The meeting heralded the beginning of a long friendship and a mutual appreciation between the two artists. After years of being out of touch, the two finally decided to collaborate on The Union. Elvis Costello - National Ransom (Hear) .................................................. In a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Elvis Costello has distinguished himself as one of pop music's most prolific and versatile musicians. His latest work, National Ransom, produced by T Bone Burnett, features all members of The Imposters and The Sugarcanes performing a wide variety of new combos with guests Vince Gill, Marc Ribot, Buddy Miller and Leon Russell. Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (Hear) .................................................. Band On The Run is the first release in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection. Personally supervised by Paul, it has been digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. Originally released in 1973, Band On The Run was Paul McCartney & Wings most successful release. This Grammy Award-winning album featured 3 Top 10 hits and reached the #1 position on Billboard's Top Album Chart.
