NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/16/2010 .................................................. Jimi Hendrix - [reissues, vinyl, boxset] (Legacy) .................................................. "West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology" is the centerpiece of Legacy's second wave of Hendrix catalog releases. Also arriving on November 16 from the artist Rolling Stone magazine called "the greatest guitarist of all time" are deluxe editions of "Jimi Hendrix Experience: BBC Sessions" and "Jimi Hendrix: Blues", his legendary "Live At Woodstock" performance, and "Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year", the highly collectible Jimi Hendrix Christmas EP. A single disc "best-of" edition of "West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology" will be available, with and without the "Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child" DVD documentary. "West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology" will also be available in a deluxe edition featuring 4CD+DVD or 8 LPs. Jesu - Heart Ache & Dethroned (Hydra Head) .................................................. 68 minutes of unreleased new/early Jesu on two CDs or two LPs, including the band's lost 2004 EP, Dethroned. There are few artists operating at the fringes of popular music today whose sound has not been in some way or another informed or shaped by the works of Justin K Broadrick. Norah Jones - Featuring (Blue Note) .................................................. Besides selling 40 million albums and winning 9 Grammys in less than 10 years, over the years Norah Jones has collaborated with dozens and dozens of artists from across the spectrum of music. This album collects Norah's favorite collaborations from 2001-2010 into one amazing collection: legends like Ray Charles, Willie Nelson and Herbie Hancock, rock artists ranging from Foo Fighters to Ryan Adams to Belle and Sebastian, hip hop luminaries OutKast, Q-Tip and Talib Kweli and country stars Dolly Parton and Gillian Welch. No matter the genre however, Norah's enchanting voice is the common denominator and while the partners are varied, she ends up owning every song and this album is a wonderful collection that holds together brilliantly. The album is a testament to Norah's status as one of the most in-demand and tasteful musical connectors in music. La Sera - Never Come Around 7" (Hardly Art) .................................................. Since joining all-female punk trio Vivian Girls during the spring of 2007 Katy Goodman's DIY-style bass playing and drifty-faded vocals have sent waves of adoration rippling throughout Brooklyn's pop punk circuit. Her newest band La Sera showcases her signature style, bringing her talent for creating dreamy pop songs even more to the forefront. Her inspiration sprung from an attraction to early pop hits from the 1950's and ethereal choral vocals. Her new songs contain warm celestial-pop melodies that echo with the dreamlike effect of a church choir and effuse a softer, less aggressive sound than the Vivian Girls. Mojo Magazine - Dylan cover - December (Mojo) .................................................. How did a young boho from Duluth, Minnesota become the hip poet of US folk music? Manhattan eyewitness/Dylan biographer Sean Wilentz on Bob's Village university. Plus, legendary Patti Smith guitarist and Nuggets compiler Lenny Kaye revisits the truth of Bob's "single vertical sound". And, good natured owner of Greenwich Village's Folklore Center and firm morris dancing nut, Izzy Young was one of Dylan's first mentors. Also Alice Cooper, Midlake, David Bowie, Bee Gees, Solomon Burke, tons of reviews and a FREE CD of Dylan's scene. Parting Gifts - Strychnine Dandelions (In the Red) .................................................. What began as a one-off split 45 by songwriters Greg Cartwright (The Oblivians, Reigning Sound) and Coco Hames (the Ettes, Coco Motion) quickly evolved into The Parting Gifts. As if the talents of Cartwright and Hames aren't enough, the album features intense performances from Dan Auerbach (Black Keys), Patrick Keeler (Greenhornes, Raconteurs), Jem Cohen and Poni Silver (the Ettes) and Dave Amels (Reigning Sound). The result is an impressive 14 original songs penned by Cartwright and Hames, as well as a haunting cover of the Rolling Stones "(Walkin' Through the) Sleepy City." Bruce Springsteen - The Promise (Columbia) .................................................. "Darkness was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble. But the music that got left behind was substantial." For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the Darkness recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became." Lyrics to all of the songs, a new essay from Bruce Springsteen and never-before-seen photographs from the Darkness sessions are also included. 3CD+3DVD deluxe box also available. Free photo-litho while they last! Stereolab - Not Music (Drag City) .................................................. New release, the 12th album in an infamous career, Not Music is part of Tim Gane's 2007 science experiment involving improvised chord sequences played on piano or vibraphone, over top of which were placed little drum loops. This was a new way of writing and it yielded a bumper crop of compositions, nearly 70 of which were boiled down into 32 new songs, 14 of which were cherry-picked to form Chemical Chords. Vollmar / Sleeping Bag - split 7" (Standard) .................................................. A split release between the soft-spoken Vollmar and the newbies Sleeping Bag. As the drummer for several inactive bands, on winter break from school, Dave Segedy was inspired without an outlet. Unaccustomed to melodic instruments, he relied on pop instinct, simply writing and recording what he wanted to listen to. He focused on efficiency and the interaction of the songs. The result is Sleeping Bag. It has been described as being rooted in the 90s, resembling Starflyer 59, with the instrumentation and lift of The Rentals, and the occasional sprawl of Built to Spill. Segedy recruited fellow locals David Woodruff and Lewis Rogers to form his live trio. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Mike Dixon. .................................................. Each album has a review and enables you to listen to the entire album before you buy it. Give 'er a spin! Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz (Asthmatic Kitty) .................................................. The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its extensive use of electronics. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, more primary, and more explicit than anything Sufjan has done before. Antony & The Johnsons - Swanlights (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Swanlights may be Antony's most wide-ranging emotional work to date. Whereas on The Crying Light, Antony paired everything back to its most distilled and essential, on Swanlights the vines have become overgrown and the sound palette has become more exotic, strange percussive elements, John Cale-esque string drones, heavily distorted guitars and symphonic voicings thread the song cycle together. It includes the song "Fletta", a duet with Bjork. Elton John & Leon Russell - The Union (Decca) .................................................. Produced by Oscar and multiple-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, The Union was recorded live in the studio with Elton and Leon on dueling pianos. It features a variety of musical genres from R&B, soul, gospel, country, pop and rock, and includes selections written by Elton and his lifelong lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as the combined incomparable songwriting team encompassing Leon, Elton, Bernie and T Bone. Leon first met Elton in 1970 when he attended Elton's first ever U.S. show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The meeting heralded the beginning of a long friendship and a mutual appreciation between the two artists. After years of being out of touch, the two finally decided to collaborate on The Union. Elvis Costello - National Ransom (Hear) .................................................. In a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Elvis Costello has distinguished himself as one of pop music's most prolific and versatile musicians. His latest work, National Ransom, produced by T Bone Burnett, features all members of The Imposters and The Sugarcanes performing a wide variety of new combos with guests Vince Gill, Marc Ribot, Buddy Miller and Leon Russell. Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (Hear) .................................................. Band On The Run is the first release in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection. Personally supervised by Paul, it has been digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. Originally released in 1973, Band On The Run was Paul McCartney & Wings most successful release. This Grammy Award-winning album featured 3 Top 10 hits and reached the #1 position on Billboard's Top Album Chart.
