If you follow Landlocked on Facebook or Twitter (and you should!) then you already heard some exciting news: We have teamed up with local label Secretly Canadian to release a live record from our instore performance with Damien Jurado from last year. This awesome, intimate performance will come out on vinyl LP only for Record Store Day 2011, on Saturday April 16th. Quantities will be limited and as an extra bonus, we are getting Damien to autograph a portion of the copies sold at Landlocked Music. Recorded by Dave Vettraino and Russian Recording, it includes fan favorites like "Denton, Texas" as well as an unreleased song titled "Thax Douglas #1" which Jurado wrote about the cult poet that for years read his music inspired poems from stage before shows in Chicago. NEW ARRIVALS for March 8th .................................................. Exene Cervenka - The Excitement of Maybe (Bloodshot) .................................................. Many know Exene as a lead member and co-founder of the legendary LA punk rock band, X. While that's a good place to begin, it hardly defines her. Following the formal breakup of X- Exene continued her transformation into a more formidable solo artist by continuing to write musically with the release of two critically acclaimed solo albums, within the print medium through poetry and books, in spoken word performances, and as a visual artist. The Excitement of Maybe is the next chapter. Maybe it's the one that follows the run-in with an unexpected adventure, where the simplicity of real life seems more attractive than even the most exotic of circumstances. Riley Etheridge Jr - Powder Keg (Rock Ridge) .................................................. A South Carolina native, Etheridge spent many years living and playing music in Louisiana, and his sophomore effort, "Powder Keg," it's as if he has never left. "Powder Keg" ignites with the Southern-style, blues-rocking title track that opens the disc, and Etheridge keeps a Louisiana groove going on throughout. Etheridge deftly blends together rock, country, blues, soul, and folk into a rich Americana sound. Lupe Fiasco - Lasers (Atlantic) .................................................. Lasers reaches new heights of lyrical and musical mastery, while aiming to reach even bigger audiences. The album is a reflection of a 14-point manifesto the Chicago-born MC composed to guide him on the project, including items like "We want substance in the place of popularity" and "We will not compromise who we are to be accepted by the crowd." Lasers features some of the most thought-provoking rhymes and concepts Fiasco has ever conceived, combined with irresistible melodies, production by the likes of Jerry Wonder and The Neptunes, as well as collaborations with John Legend, Trey Songz, and others. Ellie Goulding - Lights (Interscope) .................................................. The 24 year-old UK singer Ellie Goulding is already a success in her native England. The US version includes 3 songs not available on the original UK version. The New Yorker called Ellie "the future of music" and the LA Times raved, "her set seemed to cement her pop bona fides." "She can reel off some powerful drum and guitar chops and her voice is a serious and sure instrument in person." Described as "electro-folk-acoustic-pop," Ellie's songs mix heartfelt emotion with other-worldly atmospherics, spinning electronica into dreamy warmth. Jorma & Movie Bare - Lollipop Gold LP (St Ives) .................................................. Winter death brings us future life, and thus sprang forth Lollipop Gold. Recorded in a warehouse in Indianapolis, just a few months after the scheduled producer passed away in the studio, this record was made with lonely grit and a determination to do something unusual for that beloved lost friend and for the band itself in the middle of a cold Midwestern winter. Like multiple transmissions of alien radio channeled through a dysfunctional family band, the songs are as strange a mix as you can find nowadays coming from one body. Formed from the bellybutton of Marmoset songsmith Jorma Whittaker, this cauldron of material was brought into light with a distinctly male/female, death/life, able/unable articulation. Comprised of half boys/half girls, some band members literally divorced while the band recorded. Bound to be your fave new misanthropic do-gooders this side of nowhere, if you can find them. Memphis - Here Comes a City (Arts & Crafts) .................................................. Memphis features Star's co-songwriter and vocalist Torquil Campbell and composer Chris Dumont. This is another collection of exquisitely crafted pop songs that translates to music stunning imagery from everyday life. The duo has been creating music together since the late 90s, while both were still struggling artists living out their dreams of being in New York City and wanting to be in their very own band. Recorded over a 3-year period in New York, Montreal, Seattle, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Vancouver, Here Comes A City is undoubtedly a nod to the song by Australian pop gods The Go-Betweens. Parts & Labor - Constant Future (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Constant Future is a career-defining statement from Brooklyn-based noise-pop trio Parts & Labor. The album's 12 tracks deliver the bare essentials that made them unique totems of modern art-punk: synthesized keyboard riffs distorted into oblivion, percussion pummeled hypnotically, crackling drones that haunt and soothe, fearless melodies hollered skyward. But fifth album Constant Future finds them crashing back to earth, focusing pointedly on what they do best: unique, electronic landscapes melded with buzzing, anthemic hooks. R.E.M. - Collapse Into Now (Warner Bros) .................................................. For Collapse Into Now, R.E.M. re-teamed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacknife Lee, who produced the band's previous album Accelerate. R.E.M. and Lee recorded the album in New Orleans at the Music Shed and in Berlin at the famed Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie's Heroes, U2's Achtung Baby, and Iggy Pop's Lust for Life, were made. Additional recording and mixing was done at the venerable Blackbird Studio in Nashville. The album also features some very special guests: Patti Smith, guitarist Lenny Kaye, Peaches, Eddie Vedder, and The Hidden Cameras frontman Joel Gibb. Rival Schools - Pedals (Atlantic) .................................................. Nearly a decade after the release of their classic debut United By Fate, Rival Schools have finally returned from their hiatus to deliver their long-awaited follow-up. The album is an immensely satisfying second dose of what made the band so cherished when they first hit the scene, and serves a reminder of their influence on so many young bands active today. Pedals tracks like "Choose Your Adventure" and "Shot After Shot" show the group's hard-hitting mode, packed with crunchy guitars, propulsive grooves and shout-along vocals. On the other end of the spectrum, "69 Guns" features Rival Schools' more expansive side and has one of their most soaring choruses yet. Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo (Matador) .................................................. Philadelphia's own Kurt Vile returns with his second proper album (2008's Childish Prodigy was a compendium of sorts). Smoke Ring For My Halo is a gorgeously layered record. Ranging from the tender breezy folk in "Jesus Fever" to the tuff urban guitar riff of "Puppet To The Man," Vile's distinctive Philly-accented vocal ties together a sweeping & evocative project - a true American psychedelic folk album. Wye Oak - Civilian (Merge) .................................................. Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack return with their 3rd album. Civilian is a kind of 21st-century folk music, imbued with dense shoegaze guitars, nearly melodic rhythms, and impeccable splashes of electronic color. Without leaning on conventional structure, the songs beguile with fascinating chords and melodies, Jenn's voice and riveting lyrics, mesmerizing rhythms, and an intoxicating aural landscape. Jenn sums up the meaning of the album saying, "this collection of songs is called Civilian because I believe everyone wants to be normal, but no one truly is." Bright Eyes - The People's Key (Saddle Creek) .................................................. The People's Key- the band's seventh studio album- is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2007's acclaimed Cassadaga. Since 2006 the once revolving cast of Bright Eyes players has settled around permanent members Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, with additional musicians joining them in the studio and on tour. Fully realized and bursting with charisma, The People's Key is an assured and accomplished album, artfully arranged and filled with the engaging and mesmeric songwriting for which Oberst is renowned. And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Tao Of The Dead (Superball) .................................................. And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead return with their seventh full-length release, a surprisingly forceful yet sophisticated album that evokes a refreshing nostalgia (paying a faithful homage to Pink Floyd, Rush, Steppenwolf and even Neu!). Adele - 21 (Columbia) .................................................. 21 is the eagerly awaited sophomore album from British singer-songwriter Adele, and the follow- up to her critically acclaimed, award winning debut album 19. Renowned for her incredibly unique vocal ability and songwriting, Adele's debut received two Grammy Awards in 2009 (Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance) as well as a BRIT Award in 2008 (Critics Choice). This new collection of songs on 21 showcases the growth of this incredible artist, who at the very young age of twenty two, exhibits the poise of a seasoned veteran. Adele's music takes some new direction while staying true to her signature style. "Rolling in the Deep" is the pounding, energetic first single. Middle Brother - s/t (Partisan) .................................................. The lead singers of Deer Tick, Dawes, and Delta Spirit come together to form Middle Brother. McCauley, Goldsmith, Vasquez - 3 songwriters with an amazing sense of purpose, balancing themes of their own playful self-indulgence with humbler notes of heartbreak and hope. Alt-country folk mixed with soulful rock n roll. Middle Brother is the master collaborative event finally risen out of the roots of their genre. Bayside - Killing Time (Wind-Up) .................................................. "Take one part Weezer tunefulness and one part Nirvana aggression, add a dash of Green Day's ambition, then shake, serve, rock out." - Maxim. The band's 5th studio recording, three of which debuted on Billboard's Top 200 chart. Their touring success has led to a devoted, almost cult-like, fan base which is where their "Bayside is a Cult" slogan stems from. The 10-track album was produced by the legendary Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Pixies). -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://www.facebook.com/pages/Landlocked-Music/24299970219 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
