Gotta give a quick shout out to WIUX Culture Shock - happening this saturday in Dunn Meadow on IU campus. Starting at 2pm til dusk. FREE! NEW ARRIVALS for April 19th .................................................. Dengue Fever - Cannibal Courtship (Fantasy) .................................................. Dengue Fever, with their exotic blend of Cambodian rock, Afro grooves, surf and garage psych, returns with Cannibal Courtship, the group's first studio album since 2008's Venus on Earth and their Fantasy Records debut. The band has evolved from performing primarily Cambodian cover tunes from the 1960s on their eponymous first album in 2003 to writing all original material as well as singing significantly more songs in English on Venus On Earth. RIYL Lotus Festival or Sublime Frequencies series. Gorillaz - The Fall (Virgin) .................................................. The music was recorded during spare time while on the road. "I did it because there's a lot of time that you just spend staring at walls essentially. And it was a fantastic way of doing it" says Damon Albarn. "I found working in the day, whether it's in the hotel or in the venue, it was a brilliant way of keeping myself well." Adding that the collection is "..like a diary, I literally wrote everything on the day in each place and there's a strange sort of sound of America and its musical traditions that comes through. It feels like a journey through America." The Head and the Heart - s/t (Sub Pop) .................................................. So many decisions in life and in the music we love can come down to a critical tug between the logic in our heads and the hot red blood beating through our hearts. Seattle's The Head and the Heart live authentically in that crux, finding joy and beauty wedged there. Their music pulses effervescently both explosively danceable and intuitively intelligent. With Americana roots and strong vocal harmonics that swell like a river, this band finds its anchor in solid songwriting that has even the jaded humming along by the second listen. Limousines - Get Sharp (Dangerbird) .................................................. Debut release from the Bay Area Electropop duo. The Limousines debut was initially self-released in 2010 and the band sold over 5,000 copies from the trunk of their car and at live shows. 'Very Busy People' and' Internet Killed The Video Star' gained immediate attention in the band's local scene with heavy radio play along the west coast. Bob Schneider - A Perfect Day (Kirtland) .................................................. Bob Schneider is not new to this game. He has built his career as a working class musician and as a result has an institution of faithful followers all across the country with a mega-fan-base epicenter in Austin. There have been highs - the near-breakthrough success of 'Lonelyland,' and the "next big thing" hype that surrounded it. And lows - he was subsequently dropped by two labels. The 11th solo album from the Austin-based singer/songwriter. Produced by Dwight A. Baker, the album is filled with the type of candid and razor-sharp lyrics that have made Schneider a firm favorite in critics' circles and a must-see performer by legions of music fans. Ralph Stanley - A Mother's Prayer (Rebel) .................................................. For well over a decade now, Dr. Ralph Stanley has been an iconic figure in American music. With generous touches of old-time, gospel, and what is now termed "bluegrass music," Ralph has successfully created his unique brand of Americana, a sound he simply calls "Old-Time Mountain Music." This new album is classic Stanley. The incredible singing that has been the hallmark of his sound is front and center here, and the 14 featured songs are varied in their composition and rich in their texture. This is yet another masterful addition to an already impressive recording career. Tune-Yards - Whokill (4AD) .................................................. The sophomore album by Merrill GarbusÕ tUnE-yArDs, is a thrill for fans of the live show like the instore here at Landlocked. No longer is her artful songwriting and soulful voice obscured by digital fuzz as it often was on her solo debut, BiRd-BrAiNs. Transplanting herself from Montreal to sunny Oakland, CA, while touring almost non-stop for over 2 years, Merrill has stripped tUnE-yArDs away to a more precise, concentrated and vivid sound. Retaining the honesty of the lonely bedroom confessional characteristic of her early work, but with the addition of the fangs, claws and dented metal of its new surroundings. One essential new joint is dexterous bass member and Bloomington ex-pat Nate Brenner, who co-wrote a few songs. Unthanks - Last (Rough Trade) .................................................. Known for their timeless, unsentimental and quietly subversive tales of loss, fear, booze, brawels, abuse and sorrow, siblings Rachel and Becky Unthank are honest, young storytellers outside of time, forging links between folk worlds old, new and other. It's hard to imagine a British folk band with fans like Radiohead, Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Damon Albarn, Ewan McGregor and Nick Hornby, but The Unthanks occupy a unique place in music. Influenced as much by the minimalist eccentricity of Steve Reich, Antony & The Johnsons, Robert Wyatt and Miles Davis, as they are by their Geordie native North East England, back home The Unthanks have established themselves as the most innovative and critically acclaimed folk band in modern history. Vacation Club - I'm A Mess 7" (Glory Hole) .................................................. If Brian Wilson had actually recorded Charles Manson's tepid folk ballads, he might have ended up with songs like Vacation Club's "Gettin' Man" and "Feeling Bad," the first two tracks from that Vacation Club single. Closer "Beach Flowers" is a bombastic summertime ballad complete with angelic harmonies. Look for Glory Hole Records in an old fashioned record holder. In addition, Glory Hole also has a two-song Vacation Club / The Kemps split and a three-song Adam Kuhn / Christian Taylor and Homeschool split. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) .................................................. James Blake - s/t 2LP (Universal) Bonnie Prince Billy & Matt Sweeney - Must be Blind 10" (Drag City) Burial - Street Halo 12" (Hyperdub) Michael Hurley - LP reissues (Light in the Attic) Also Released This Week .................................................. Timber Timbre - Creep On Creepin' On (Arts & Crafts) .................................................. Creep On Creepin' On was recorded inside a converted church studio with Grammy nominee Mark Lawson, and the result is Timber Timbre's most brilliant and robust record to date. It's a collection of 10 tracks that expands to incorporate rich and varied melodies, affecting lyricism and evocative vintage instrumentation. The result is heartrending compositions that engage, transport and challenge. Eulogies - Tear the Fences Down (Dangerbird) .................................................. Following up 2009's much-loved, Here Anonymous, that most notably contained the tune, "Two Can Play," featuring Nikki Monninger of the Silversun Pickups, Eulogies third full-length album is penned by band guitarist/vocalist Peter Walker and dedicated to Pablo Castelaz, the son of Dangerbird label head, Jeff Castelaz who passed away in 2009 from a rare form of cancer. J Mascis - Several Shades of Why (Sub Pop) .................................................. In the quarter century since he founded Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has created some of the era's signature songs, albums and styles. Several Shades of Why, is J's first solo studio record. Nearly all acoustic, Several Shades of Why was created with the help of a few friends including Kurt Vile, Kevin Drew, Ben Bridwell, and Pall Jenkins. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding (Dangerbird) .................................................. Beady Eye is Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer and Andy Bell. Debut album features 13 brand new songs written by the band and recorded in London w/ producer Steve Lillywhite. Features the single, "The Roller".
