If you've been in the shop lately, there is a good chance you've seen the record lathe cabinet we have set up near the back of the store. There has been lots of questions about it, so we are setting up a demonstration with its builder! Yes, it will be a record cutting demo but specifically it will be "Creating Records With Experimental Materials" with Jack Kilby. He'll talk a little bit about the proper way to cut a record on a dub plate. Then look at various record grooves with a USB microscope. Make some cuts on to a plastic plate, x-ray and a piece of acrylic, and listen and look at those grooves. Then a talk about surface noise and the techniques to eliminate it. It makes for a good visual, you can actually see the surface noise with the microscope. We might also try to do a live recording to test how that works. Thursday May 5th at 6:30pm. Architecture in Helsinki - Moment Bends (Downtown) .................................................. Moment Bends sounds like the album they've waited their whole lives to make, retaining the fizzing immediacy of its three predecessors but re-molded with a more sophisticated touch. In large parts, Moment Bends is in dialogue with the dance floor, without being a slave to any particular rhythm. So, imagine a sound equal parts Italia 1982, California 1979 and Melbourne 2011, glued together with a dynamic bounce and a compelling romanticism. Recorded over a two year period in the band's studio space. The band enlisted longtime collaborator Francois Tetaz to guide them through the record making process, in a spiritual healing/ co-production /mixing role. Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (Capitol) .................................................. The long-awaited eighth album from the Hip Hop/Rock trio. Hot Sauce Committee Part Two was produced by Beastie Boys and mixed by Philippe Zdar. This album marks Mike "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "Ad Rock" Horovitz and Adam "MCA" Yauch's first full length effort since 2007's Grammy-winning all-instrumental The Mix-Up. LP version in June! Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop) .................................................. Drawing inspiration from folk/rock from 1965 to 1973, and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks in particular, Helplessness Blues sees Fleet Foxes heighten and extend themselves, adding instrumentation (clarinet, the music box, pedal steel guitar, lap steel guitar, Tibetan singing bowls, vibraphone, etc., along with more traditional band instrumentation), with a focus on clear, direct lyrics, and an emphasis on group vocal harmonies. One of the prevailing themes of the album is the struggle between who you are and who you want to be or who you want to end up, and how sometimes you are the only thing getting in the way of that. Austin Lucas - A New Home in the Old World (Last Chance) .................................................. Raised in the backwoods country of Monroe County, Austin was born into a folk and bluegrass lineage. His father, Bob Lucas, is an accomplished musician in his own right, having earned songwriting credits on two of Allison KraussÕ albums. In a narrative as well-worn as it is true, Lucas rebelled against his upbringing, leaving his Americana roots for the catharsis of punk rock. After the better part of a decade spent criss-crossing the globe with a series of bands in broken-down vans, Lucas hit a musical glass-ceiling, eventually finding respite for his ringing ears in the delicacy of traditional songcraft. Incorporating his now familiar banjo, fiddle, upright bass, and pedal steel, A New Home In The Old World ratchets the sound up to the next level, adding texture with a Hammond B3 organ, the brassy flourishes of a trumpet. Panic Strikes A Chord - Accidents in a Very Busy Place (self) .................................................. "The musical vision of Jeremy Brightbill, the group has shifted from its lo-fi Bedhead-esque experimental singer-songwriter origins to a swaggering mash-up of the best of 90's alt-rock. From that period's awkward gangly jangle of Merge's catalog to the superglue the amps to 11 bombast of Sub Pop, Panic makes the connection seamlessly and naturally, sounding familiar and fresh at the same time. When the indie rock world (and for that matter the pop world) wring out the last drop of 80s nostalgia and are ready to move onward to appreciating the 90s unironically, they'll find their new favorite band in Panic Strikes a Chord." - Postcard Elba Sleepingdog - With Our Heads in the Clouds (Gizeh) .................................................. Once upon a time, Chantal Acda made the acquaintance of Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid). They first collaborated with vocals together on the track, 'The Struggle' on Mr. Wiltzie's 2004 'The Dead Texan' (Kranky). For their new release, these two have gone back in time to capture the sound of glacial moving, dark cough syrup pop music. Wiltzie has manipulated his trademark Stars of the Lid sound of haunting ambience, deconstructing, and funneling it through the beautiful voice, and song compositions of Chantal. Together, Sleepingdog have gently abducted these gaseous tones, and choruses of pacific tree frogs into some beautifully crafted melancholic orchestration that reminds us all that we exist in a world of strangers, drifting only two feet apart. Wax Poetics - #46 Jazz Issue .................................................. On the covers, front: George Benson, back: George Duke. Contents: Editor's Letter, Re:Discovery (Towson State University Jazz Ensemble, Randy Weston, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Los Exciters, Fred Tompkins); In Memoriam: Bobby Robinson 1917-2011; Coltrane's Lost Recordings; Nostalgia 77; Record Rundown (DJ Soulscape rediscovers South Korea's musical history); Mainstream Records (label feature); Billy Cobham; Norman Connors; Funkin' for Jamaica; Phil Cohran; Analog Out. 114 pages, full color, high gloss. VA - Cult Cargo: Salsa Boricua de Chicago (Numero Group) .................................................. Far from the twin epicenters of New York and Miami, Carlos Ruiz and his Ebirac label were both feeling and generating the aftershocks of the mid-'70s salsa boom. Holed up in their own bustling Puerto Rican community center on Chicago's west side, these third coast salseros plied their trade outside the hot lights, cutting their teeth in city parks, VFW halls, and Holiday Inn rec rooms. Nearly 50 records survive in the wake of orquestas La Justicia, La Solucion, and Tipica Leal '79, the most impassioned, singular moments of which are compiled here. Dirty Vegas - Electric Love (OM) Ready to capture the world's attention once again, Electric Love marks the explosive return of Grammy award-winning Dirty Vegas. The group has had worldwide fame with their infectious and acclaimed hit track "Days Go By". Now the group is back with their latest effort, Electric Love. The album finds that elusive sweet spot between the slickly polished electronic sounds of their past and a more decidedly rock edge, deftly balancing beats and guitar-led melodies. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop) Fleet Foxes are from Seattle and the members of the band are Robin Pecknold, Skye Skjelset, Josh Tillman, Casey Wescott, Christian Wargo, and Morgan Henderson. The first Fleet Foxes album was released on Sub Pop in 2008 and earned glowing reviews in MOJO, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork, etc., and later that year the band appeared on Saturday Night Live. One of the most anticipated releases of 2011, Helplessness Blues is the new album from Fleet Foxes. Airborne Toxic Event - All At Once (Island) Produced by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Band of Horses, the Ting Tings), "Changing" is the first single from the Airborne Toxic Event's long-awaited new album, All At Once. Since their debut album's release in 2008, The Airborne Toxic Event, has sold over 200,000 albums in the US. Named "Debut Album of the Year" by the Boston Herald, the record spent 53 weeks on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, with eight of those weeks logged at #1. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://www.facebook.com/pages/Landlocked-Music/24299970219 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
