Do the math, that's a free preview for all of you MMJ lovers out there! NEW ARRIVALS for May 10th .................................................. The Antlers - Burst Apart (French Kiss) .................................................. The Antlers arise upon their already distinctive voice with an inspired melding of complex electronic textures and acutely emotive songcraft. The follow-up to 2009's Hospice was born out of an intensely collaborative process in which the band fully immersed themselves in sonic experimentation, working as a tightly knit creative unit to fulfill a shared musical vision. With its swelling pulse beats, intricately crafted arrangements, and dreamy pop hooks, the remarkably sensual Burst Apart sees their ambition and artistry ascending to an extraordinary new plane. The Cars - Move Like This (Hear) .................................................. After a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles made them one of the most popular American rock bands of the late 70s thru mid-80s, The Cars are back in action with their very first studio album in 24 years! Featuring original band members Ric Ocasek, David Robinson, Elliot Easton & Greg Hawkes, Move Like This recalls the alt-rock minimalistic sound The Cars are so well known for, yet at the same time, maintains significant relevance to the music of today. Felice Brothers - Celebration Florida (Fat Possum) .................................................. An exhilarating amalgamation of frightening horn sections, unexpected 808s, ambient synth, schoolyard taunts, booming, primitive drum beats, heavy bass lines, piano, violin, accordion, ringing guitars, rave beats, and sinister acid jazz that captivates and mystifies. Recorded in the library and theater of Beacon, NYs old high school, the band explores a multitude of sounds and instrumentation throughout. Its inspired, imaginative, heady, menacing, passionate, and rollicking. And it's as steadfastly authentic as ever, expanding upon the dark, woozy undercurrent of ramshackle barroom blues, vaudevillian atmospherics, and surreal storytelling of their previous albums. Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact (4AD) .................................................. Gang Gang Dance's first album for 4AD was recorded in an old church converted to a recording studio in upstate New York, with a myriad of chimes, drums and good vibrations. Chris Coady was behind the board to capture the impromptu jam sessions as well as the structured songs the band had on hand when they started, while Alex Epton aka XXXchange, focused on vocals with Lizzi. When combined, we have the cleanest, freshest and most focused Gang Gang Record to date. And you can catch their live show at the Bishop this summer! The Globes - Future Self (Barsuk) .................................................. Formed in their sleepy city of Spokane, WA collaboratively dissecting and interpreting the fundamentals of songwriting while forging together their own musical inspirations. A few years later they are proving to be an earnest musical force. 2010 saw the band touring with Menomena, A Place to Bury Strangers, Minus The Bear, and others, consistently leaving word-of-mouth excitement in their wake. The press has already warmed to the band, with The Stranger lauding their "carefully crafted guitar rock that's beautiful, but with a bang," and The Seattle Weekly finding "hints of darkness and discord... moody yet warm, deep and lovable. It's the ideal kind of music to get attached to, not demanding attention but definitely meriting it." Warren Haynes - Man in Motion (Stax) .................................................. A Grammy-winner and 9-time nominee, Warren is ranked 23rd on Rolling Stone Magazine's "Greatest Guitarists Of All Time" list. He is the frontman for Gov't Mule as well as vocalist and guitarist for The Allman Brothers Band and The Dead. Haynes' soul-inspired Man In Motion demonstrates his relentless creative drive on some of his most emotionally powerful vocals and lush, vivid writing to date. He is joined by soul and R&B kingpins George Porter Jr., Ian McLagan, Ruthie Foster, Ivan Neville and others. Booker T Jones - The Road From Memphis (Anti) .................................................. Booker (Bachelor of Music Education from IU, 1966!) and The Roots roar through a set of both timeless and contemporary originals (including covers of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" and Lauren Hill's "Everything Is Everything"). Along for the ride are vocalists Matt Berninger of the National, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones, Lou Reed, and Booker himself, telling the story of how the funk/soul sound that Booker helped invent spiraled out from Memphis, touching The Roots hometown of Philadelphia, New York (where engineer Gabe Roth has been recreating classic soul sonics for everyone from Sharon Jones to Amy Winehouse), and Detroit. Man Man - Life Fantastic (Anti) .................................................. Working for the first time with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Man Man have brought along the fierce energy of their renowned live shows while finding a new melodic voice on songs like "Oh, La Brea" with its Harry Nilsson music hall touches, or "Life Fantastic" loping along to a classic David Bowie piano vamp. Expanding their palette while keeping the found instruments (typewriter bell, anyone?), Man Man continue to evolve into an entirely new form of propulsive and fun pop music. Mojo Magazine - Kate Bush cover .................................................. Following a five-year silence, the peerless Kate Bush returns with an album of reworked tracks from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. Also, Emmylou Harris, The Black Keys, Dylan in China, Hugh Laurie, Donovan Leitch, Bill Callahan, Suede and a bonus CD celebrating the Black Keys and their influences. Natural Child - 1971 LP (Infinity Cat) .................................................. "From the moment they thump out that infectious, sledgehammer beat, Natural Child had me in their sludgy yet vigorous, stoner-punk clutches. The Nashville, Tennessee trioÕs Hard WorkinÕ Man is a thick-as-molasses, low-speed stomper; wicked in tone, yet with a sweetly innocent, melodic thread woven throughout. Like somewhat menacing, backwoods cousins to The Sonics and Question Mark and The Mysterians, these southern ruffians have been thoroughly steeped in 60Õs garage rock and psychedelia, and from it distilled their own gnarlier, countrified rock and roll." - MOKB. Featuring a former member of Bloomington's The Horribly Wrong! Okkervil River - I Am Very Far (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. "The goal was to push my brain to places it didn't want to go. The idea was to not have any idea to keep myself confused about what I was doing," frontman Will Sheff says about Okkervil River's 2011 album. The resulting record, I Am Very Far, is a startling break from anything this band has done before. By turns terrifying and joyous, violent and serene, grotesque and romantic, it's a celebration of forces beyond our control. Other Lives - Tamer Animals (TBD) .................................................. Oklahoma's Other Lives are a five man folk ensemble and then some. The music draws as much from the rich choral folk harmonies of Fleet Foxes as it does from relaxed organic pop music. The results are evocative with an overwhelming sense of natural wonder, set with earthy and under-stated vocals, and weathered with gentle multi-instrumental strings and an expansive and arboreal sound-palette. The term "chamber folk" probably comes closest to describing them, though according to the band, their influences also lie in the stark minimalism of 20th Century composers, in particular Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Having already toured with The National and Decemberists and getting hyped on Thom Yorke's blog, its time for everyone else to start paying attention. Sam Roberts Band - Collider (Rounder) .................................................. On his fourth album, Sam reinforces the spirit of his band's classic pop song-craft and infectious melodies, while at the same time exploring a world of rhythms, sounds and ideas beyond where they have gone before. Stepping onboard for his maiden voyage, producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine) helps set the tone for this new sound. Best exemplified on the album's first single, The Last Crusade, the song begins as a simmering soul shuffle before gradually intensifying into a brass- blasted Afro-funk blowout. Throughout the album guitars are used texturally to emphasize the rhythm, a tactic that ultimately shines great light on the band's instantly memorable melodies and lyrical wisdom, resulting in some of their most affecting performances to date. Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones (Epitaph) .................................................. With an acoustic guitar very much at its core, the album is noticeably more folky than the proceeding Poetry Of The Deed, and even features a traditional English style a cappella. With contributions from ex-Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay, folk singers Emily Barker and Chris T-T, and Unbelievable Truth's Andy Yorke, the songs address themes of mortality, relationships and religion in what proves to be an undeniably brave and beautiful album. Tyler the Creator - Goblin (XL) .................................................. Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All are a 10-deep hip-hop collective. But don't dare call them the new Wu-Tang Clan. The collective features rappers, producers, visual artists, skate kids, contrarians, outcasts, amoral teenagers, and fatherless children. Their de facto leader is a 19-year-old who calls himself Tyler the Creator AKA Ace Creator. He is a rapper-producer. He possesses a charred, viscous groan of a voice; sometimes he manipulates the frequency to make it even deeper and darker. Wild Beasts - Smother (Domino) .................................................. Wild Beasts' last album, Two Dancers, earned them a nomination in the prestigious Mercury Awards. A year and a half later, Smother reveals a much more mature band. They've kept their distinct sound intact: oscillating falsetto and baritone vocals, lyrical wit, and a penchant for seedier topics. However, this new album incorporates rich electronic textures and a subtlety of melody not heard in their earlier work. Fans will not be disappointed. Young Legionnaire - Crisis Works (Wichita) .................................................. Young Legionnaire is Paul Mullen (yourcodenameis:milo), Gordon Moakes (Bloc Party), and Dean Pearson. "The idea was to make a big, juddering noise but weave a trail of melody through it. Even though the format of guitar, bass, drums and vocal is established, is nothing ground-breaking, the possibilities are endless. There's always another riff to write, a heavier sound to find. And we're looking for the magic in the gaps between the riffs too." Produced by Rich Jackson (Future Of The Left) the album combines the ferocious dynamics of Trail of Dead with the intensity of Husker Du, it is an album full of power and intent. RIYL: Queens Of The Stone Age, Coheed and Cambria, System of a Down, Deftones. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ..................................................
