Need more rock and/or roll in your life? Landlocked co-owner Jason hosts a great radio show every-other Monday on WFHB community radio here in Bloomington. Terminal Jive: Modern and classic Garage Rock and Punk, with sidetracks into Soul, Powerpop, and Early Rock and Roll. Terminal Jive runs from 11PM-1AM - Check out last week's playlist here: http://spinitron.com/radio/playlist.php?station=wfhb&ptype=d&playlist=545 NEW ARRIVALS for May 17th .................................................. Amor de Dias - Street of the Love of Days (Merge) .................................................. A new group formed by Alasdair MacLean of the Clientele and Lupe Nunez-Fernandez of Pipas. Over the course of 3 years, they quietly put together their debut record during evenings and weekends as they called in local friends and visiting musicians (Damon & Naomi, Gary Olson) for sessions, building up the songs multifaceted arrangements and vocal harmonies with harps, bouzoukis, strings, recorders, and brass over the core of dual Spanish guitars and the dream imagery of their bilingual lyrics. Austra - Feel it Break (Domino) .................................................. Singer Katie Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf have crafted a stark, danceable masterpiece suitable for both ritual incantations and clubs; an album hearkening back to the seedier side of New Wave but still deeply rooted in Stelmanis's classical and operatic upbringing- think the dirty alleys and after-hours clubs dreamed up by Japan and Soft Cell. Bahamas - Pink Strat (Universal) .................................................. Afie Jurvanen is a Finnish-Canadian from a working class town in rural Ontario. But his chosen epithet is filling. Since 2009 he's been writing songs about sunsets, love affairs, and making out with crooked smiles. Through simple arrangements, he charts an escape route from the snow belt to the coral reefs. Pink Strat is named after the guitar that's seen him through since his early days as a sideman playing for the likes of Jason Collett, Amy Millan and Feist. Since its Canada-only release in 2009, Pink Strat has slowly grown a strong following amongst musicians- leading to touring with Wilco and opening slots for Elvis Costello, Calexico, Weakerthans, and Sam Roberts. Company of Thieves - Running from a Gamble (Wind-Up) .................................................. Company of Thieves are full of ideas, whether the Chicago band is writing a concept album about a girl seeking independence in modern-day America or having the audacity to channel disparate influences like The Beatles, Billie Holliday, and Radiohead into its heady, catchy rock songs. And it's always been that way for this group that started out having to prove its worth at open mics when singer Genevieve Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloch were still teenagers. Once they plugged in, the ideas continued to flow, and the fanbase started to grow along with the band's sound. Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Rome (Capitol) .................................................. Some 5 years in the making, the long awaited collaborative effort between producer Danger Mouse and Italian film composer Daniele Luppi. An homage to the spaghetti western film music that is a passion for both, the album combines the original musicians from the Morricone scores of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West and augments them with revelatory vocals from Jack White and Norah Jones. It is, above all, a fully realized album, perfectly formed and hauntingly beautiful. RIYL Air. The Elected - Bury Me In My Rings (Vagrant) .................................................. As of spring 2010, Blake Sennett had quit music. No more Rilo Kiley, no more Elected. He focused his efforts writing and directing a short film, moving out of his house, and taking in a rescue dog. Jason Cupp, the man that mixed The Elected's last LP suggested an impromptu recording session. Blake had no material, no songs to explore. Pressure free, no expectations. The results stand as a singular vision. More than a mere dalliance, this former side project now begs the attention reserved for one's main focus. As the ghosts of Rilo Kiley fade, this album presents the man responsible an opportunity to further himself from the past and develop his artistic identity. Bela Fleck - Rocket Science (eOne) .................................................. Groundbreaking banjoist/composer/bandleader Bela Fleck has reconvened the original Flecktones, the extraordinary line-up of his incredible combo. Rocket Science marks the first recording by the first fab four Flecktones in almost two decades, with pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten, and percussionist Roy Futureman Wooten. Far from being a wistful trip back in time, the album sees the Grammy-winning quartet creating some of the most forward thinking music of their career. Ben Harper - Give Till Its Gone (Virgin) .................................................. Ben's 10th studio album, and his first solo album since 2006's Both Sides Of The Gun. The album features Jackson Browne and two tracks co-written with Ringo Starr. While its songs are deeply personal, Give It Till It's Gone illuminates the universal struggle to find meaning and to fully engage with life and one another. Let's Wrestle - Nursing Home (Merge) .................................................. The second album by Let's Wrestle, was recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini. With themes that include being trapped in the suburbs and dancing boys on drugs, the band show that their view of the world is the same, they've just put on some darker sunglasses. Let's Wrestle may have lost some of their naivety lyrically, but it's certainly still there. Moby - Destroyed (Mute) .................................................. All of the songs on Destroyed were written by Moby on the road during the small hours of the night, when his insomnia was in full tilt. The silent urban nightscapes provided much inspiration. To illustrate the music on Destroyed, a book of the same name with Moby's photographs will be released. These shots were taken around the world while he was on tour, illustrating the sense of contrasting emotions he felt during that time. My Morning Jacket - Holdin On To Black Metal CDS (ATO) .................................................. This CD single contains the new song, "Holdin On To Black Metal" and also a track exclusive to this single, "Butch Cassidy" which was recorded live at Terminal 5 in New York. When you purchase this CD for $2, you get a coupon for $2 off the full length My Morning Jacket album, Circuital, out on May 31st. So if you plan on buying the album, you may as well buy this! Also, they are playing w/ Neko Case in Indianapolis at White River State Park in August. Mickey Newbury - [LP reissues/CD box] (Drag City) .................................................. Mickey wrote songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bill Monroe, Johnny Rodriguez, Hank Snow, Ray Charles, Tony Rice, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tammy Wynette, Ray Price, Don Gibson, Brenda Lee, Charlie Rich, David Allan Coe, Sammi Smith, Joan Baez, Tom Jones, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, BB King, Linda Ronstadt, and Bobby "Blue" Bland, among many others. He is most remembered for his creation of "An American Trilogy", a medley that was recorded by many, including symphony orchestras, and Elvis Presley. He is also simultaneously had four Top 10 singles on 4 different charts in the late 60s as a songwriter. Thee Oh Sees - Castlemania (In the Red) .................................................. San Francisco's incredibly prolific Oh Sees are back! While the group's previous releases on In The Red showcase their amped-up, reverb-drenched garage-psych pummel, on Castlemania, John Dwyer takes a low-key approach. Described as "summer-y and poppy"; on many of the tracks, electric guitars are jettisoned for acoustic, and the normally echo-laden vocals are a bit clearer. Happy pop melodies, sweet and somber tunes, psychedelic moves galore, cover versions of The Creation and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Perfect for sunny skies and the flowers starting to bloom. Queens of the Stone Age - s/t (Rekords) .................................................. This Rekords Records re-issue (in conjunction with Domino) has been fully remastered from the original tapes and has been expanded by 3 tracks on both CD and 2LP. The Bronze & These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For and Spiders and Vinegaroons which was part of the posthumous Kyuss/QOTSA split EP. Tinie Tempah - Disc-Overy (Astralwerks) .................................................. US debut album from the British hip-hop sensation including bonus material. In his native UK Disc-Overy is already a massive hit, having sold over half a million copies to date and earned him two Brit Awards - one for Best Single for track 'Pass Out' and the other for Best Breakthrough Artist. As an added bonus and to differentiate it from the UK album Tinie has just finished sessions with super producers Stargate to add a few more key tracks to the US release. Chad VanGaalen - Diaper Island (Sub Pop) .................................................. Every so often, Chad emerges from his bunker in Calgary with a batch of songs, giving us a window into the private world of this reclusive and enigmatic songwriter. With Diaper Island, he distills his approach, producing his most sonically cohesive album to date, and the closest thing he has done to a rock album. At the album's heart is "Sara," a simple and celebratory paean that gorgeously praises the ability of VanGaalen's partner and muse to nurture his creativity in the face of this uncertainty, and captures the songwriter at his most sincere and powerful. Hank Williams III - Hillbilly Joker (Curb) .................................................. In an era of plastic, manufactured music, it is always refreshing when someone goes against the grain and does what they want to do. Cast by certain people in the shadow of his legendary grandfather, Williams has fought long and hard to create his own sound and style, and to preserve the true outlaw spirit of real country music. Much like his grandfather and his father before Him, Hank III is his own man. He doesn't care what expectations people have in him, and he will do it the way that he does it so long as he is alive.
