Days are getting longer, days are getting hotter. Landlocked is open normal hours on Memorial Day - Monday May 30th - stop in and enjoy the holiday with us! Also, today is Bob Dylan's 70th birthday. Be sure to enjoy some Zimmerman today. NEW ARRIVALS for May 24th .................................................. David Bazan - Strange Negotiations (Barsuk) .................................................. For many years, David was the driving force behind Pedro the Lion, building a dedicated following and selling a couple hundred-thousand albums based in large part on his extraordinary melodic sense and erudite, theologically-themed songs. After a decade helming the project, he found himself embroiled in a major philosophical and spiritual cataclysm, wrapped in a growing drinking problem. Bazan got to work exorcizing both his demons and angels. Strange Negotiations focuses Bazan's energies toward the external, centering on his disappointment in the current state of accelerating American and global social fragmentation. Musically, it sounds like a great rock band playing songs they're beyond intimate with. It's the first full-length he's recorded with a band, the same band with which he toured relentlessly in support of Curse Your Branches. Boris - Heavy Rocks / Attention Please (Sargent House) .................................................. Iconoclast Japanese trio Boris are widely known for their ability to breach styles and stretch sonic boundaries of all that is heavy, psychedelic, droning and downright cathartic. But, Attention Please is more like a complete redefining of their potential in several ways. First and foremost, it is the first album on which all vocals are sung by lead guitarist, Wata. While she has previously sung on a couple of songs for singles and her own solo recordings, the entire 10-song album features her intimate, multifaceted vocal style. Secondly, the songs on Attention Please have a sultry, intoxicating catchiness to them. It's melodic without sounding pop. It's psychedelic without sounding dated. It's heavy without relying on barre chord riffs. Foster the People - Torches (Columbia) .................................................. Torches, the highly anticipated debut album by Foster The People, is the soundtrack for an eternal summer. Produced by Paul Epworth (Adele), Rich Costey (Interpol), and Greg Kurstin (Beck, RHCP), Torches delivers on both the promise of their breakthrough chart-topping single Pumped Up Kicks and the promise of this young band out of LA. "We just want people to feel better about their lives." The sound is universally uplifting combining influences from alternative's greats mixed with songs that make you dance. "Accessible yet challenging, gleaming yet gritty, pop yet petrifying: Foster The People are a fresh evolution of modern music." - NME Friendly Fires - Pala (XL) .................................................. Friendly Fires are Ed Macfarlane (vocals, synths, bass), Edd Gibson (guitar) and Jack Savidge (drums). Hailing from St Albans where the trio met as teenagers, Friendly Fires intuitive grasp of kinetic art funk, electronic euphoria and stadiumsized anthems has made them one of the most exciting and critically feted bands of the 2010's. "...their songs are wonderfully overstuffed with reshuffled and reinvigorated ideas from the 1970s and 80s postpunk guitars, funk beats, sing-along choruses, worldbeat percussion..." - NY Times Syl Johnson - Mythological 45s (Numero Group) .................................................. If there was one complaint we heard about Syl Johnson's massive 6LP/4CD overview Complete Mythology, it was its lack of portability. At 6.5 pounds, it doesn't travel well between DJ gigs. And with a dozen unreleased undeniable floor fillers, it wasn't long before folks began clamoring for a handful of these tunes on the compact 45 format. Sprawled across five 45s and wrapped in custom Syl Johnson kraft tape, these 10 songs cover a range of black music styles. From the uptempo northern sound of "Do You Know What Love Is" to the work out funk of "Right On," this limited edition singles box is an instant party starter. Lady Gaga - Born This Way (Interscope) .................................................. New album from the Pop/Dance sensation. Born This Way is the follow-up to her multi-million selling releases The Fame and The Fame Monster. Features 'Born This Way', 'Hair', 'Judas' and many more. The deluxe edition of Born This Way contains the 14 songs featured on the Standard Edition, PLUS an additional 3 new studio recordings, PLUS 5 remixes of songs from the new album. Thurston Moore - Demolished Thoughts (Matador) .................................................. The third solo album from Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore was produced by Beck and features Mary Lattimore on harp, Samara Lubielski on violin, and Beck on various instruments. Demolished Thoughts is an equally beautiful and brooding work. While there are more than a few tonal similarities to some of your favorite Moore compositions from the past, the execution this time is nothing short of staggering. Dirty Vegas - Electric Love (OM) .................................................. Ready to capture the world's attention once again, Electric Love marks the explosive return of Grammy award-winning Dirty Vegas. The group has had worldwide fame with their infectious and acclaimed hit track "Days Go By". Now the group is back with their latest effort, Electric Love. The album finds that elusive sweet spot between the slickly polished electronic sounds of their past and a more decidedly rock edge, deftly balancing beats and guitar-led melodies. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop) .................................................. Fleet Foxes are from Seattle and the members of the band are Robin Pecknold, Skye Skjelset, Josh Tillman, Casey Wescott, Christian Wargo, and Morgan Henderson.
