Its summer, its hot. We here at Landlocked are trying to come up with many ways to keep it cool and beat the heat. One sure way is to come out and buy the new Gillian Welch album on Tuesday June 28th! Bloomington loves Gill and Gill loves Bloomington, so we are eager and excited to host a listening party for the album. We will be giving away really nice John Baizley posters with purchase of the CD as well as offer deep discounts on her entire back catalog and maybe a surprise or two as well! Feel free to email us or stop in and sign up for a pre-order so you don't miss out! NEW ARRIVALS for June 6th .................................................. Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See (Domino) .................................................. Arctic Monkeys 4th album features 12 songs produced by James Ford at the legendary Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. With Suck It and See the band perfectly mesh their hard and soft sides. The album is lyrically their most verbose since their record-breaking debut Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. From shimmering opener "She's Thunderstorms" to the brilliantly buoyant "Black Treacle" through to perfect closer "That's Where You're Wrong," Alex Turner brings an articulate melodic swagger to the proceedings. Battles - Gloss Drop (Warp) .................................................. Gloss Drop is an entrancing album that defies both categorization and easy analysis. Just as Mirrored was a massive leap on from the early EPs that first got them noticed, this is truly another seismic shift, propelling them into uncharted territory. It is a sheer sense of fun, unpredictability and inventiveness that sets Battles apart from every other contemporary group. Stanier sums this up succinctly: "I don't think challenging, new music has to be super serious all the time. That's really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring." Black Lips - Arabia Mountain (Vice) .................................................. Founding fathers of Atlanta's "flower punk" movement the Black Lips are set to release Arabia Mountain, their sixth full-length album. Arabia Mountain was recorded between Brooklyn and Atlanta over the last few months of 2010 with the collaborative assistance of celebrated DJ and producer Mark Ronson, Lockett Pundt of Deerhunter, and a human skull with a microphone jammed into it. LP version comes with bonus 7"! Cults - s/t (Columbia) .................................................. The debut from enigmatic, pop duo Cults was recorded and self-produced in the band's home of NYC. Working with engineer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells) the album is chock full of some of the most deliciously offbeat, slanted and enchanted songs you're likely to hear all year. Tracks like "Most Wanted" and "Go Outside" compress key points in the history of pop including nods to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Phil Spector to Jay Z and Lesley Gore, taking the listener down some very unexpected places. Dawes - Nothing is Wrong (ATO) .................................................. The sophomore album from the L.A. Folk-Rock quartet. Dawes recorded the disc at producer Jonathan Wilson's Echo Park studio late last year in between touring commitments. Nothing Is Wrong is the follow-up to the band's 2009 debut, North Hills. A collection of songs that expertly builds upon the template laid by North Hills, Nothing Is Wrong sees Dawes displaying strong growth and evolution while still manifesting their distinctive, unforgettable voice. Ford & Lopatin - Channel Pressure (Software) .................................................. When Joel Ford and Daniel Lopatin met in 6th grade, they bonded over jazz-fusion tapes, blasting tracks from Dan's father's collection of dubbed Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra c90s. As time passed, both were immersed in their own projects (Tigercity and Oneohtrix Point Never), when they started to send each other tracks via the Internet. Channel Pressure, the production duo's debut album is a highly focused study in the effects of consumer electronics that touches on sensual bangers and hyper-spherical anthems prime for the dance floor. Fucked Up - David Comes to Life (Matador) .................................................. Their third album, the 18-song, 78-minute David Comes To Life, is a rock opera, an album set to a play. Though no less monumental, it is far more melodic than their break through The Chemistry of Common Life. There are more female vocals, which work in perfect contrast to Damian Abraham's highly effective wounded bull growl. "An 80-minute odyssey of flailing and howling that could be the most epic punk album ever." 9 of 10 stars - Spin Givers - In Light (Glassnote) .................................................. Five friends from Lafayette, Louisiana - it should be stated that the music they make is simply an ongoing reflection of this bond. They began their journey together as friends somewhere between high school and college, playing in various bands. Eventually they would all come together for one night of improvised music at the request of a friend to fill an empty slot. It was this night that a new connection was explored. The music that was created would reflect and define what would become Givers. Within their first few shows they would cross paths with Dirty Projectors, who would eventually ask them to tour the east coast in the fall of 2009. Hooray for Earth - True Loves (Dovecote) .................................................. True Loves builds upon themes expressed in the band's critically acclaimed debut EP 'Momo', and captures both the personal and universal anxieties that have such a footing in society today. 'True Loves' is also the lead single and boasts thumping drums combined with blips and synths, surprising breakdowns and soaringly apathetic lyrics to rival the likes of MGMT and Yeasayer. Other tracks featured on the record promise to drive forward with percussive beats and zealous guitar rhythms. Johann Johannsson - The Miners' Hymns (Fat Cat) .................................................. A haunting collaboration between the Icelandic composer and acclaimed American avant-garde filmmaker Bill Morrison (Decasia). The Miners' Hymns is the score for Morrison's film of the same name, a collection of richly evocative imagery treating the plight of coalminers in Northeast England. The Miners' Hymns is performed by a 16-piece brass ensemble led by noted Icelandic conductor Gudni Franzson and features the Durham Cathedral organ and organist Robert Houssart. Ladybug Transistor - Clutching Stems (Merge) .................................................. The untimely passing of drummer San Fadyl left Ladybug members at an unimaginable loss. The band quietly gathered new recruits and embarked on writing an album with the memory of San squarely in mind. Clutching Stems is a collection of songs that detail humbling heartbreak, profound longing, undoing distress, nagging regret, and coming-of-age awakenings. Peter Murphy - Ninth (Nettwerk) .................................................. His first solo album in 7 years and the first since the permanent dissolution of Bauhaus in 2009. Produced by David Baron, Ninth is a culmination of where the singer had been and where he is now, all imbued with a confidence that has been Murphy's stock in trade. While countless performers and industry types bemoan the demeaning of music in current download culture, Murphy's only concern is continuing to connect with his audience with unparalleled honesty. Nick 13 - s/t (Sugarhill) .................................................. Nick 13 releases his long-awaited solo album of Americana on Sugar Hill Records. The album was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville, and features performances from Sara Watkins, Lloyd Green and others. Nick 13 is best known as the singer, songwriter, guitarist and founder of Tiger Army. His solo work recalls the vintage American sounds of honky-tonk and classic California country from the middle of the last century with a modern twist. Lindi Ortega - Little Red Boots (Last Gang) .................................................. Lindi is a Toronto-based singer in the mold of classic artists Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris and contemporary acts Neko Case and Jenny Lewis. Torch songs filled with heartache and passion mixed with her Mexican / Irish heritage make for a unique artist personality. With a voice that "undulates with absolute splendor," Lindi recorded Little Red Boots with Juno Award winning producer Ron Lopata. CBC Radio explains her style as "a dash of country, a pinch of folk, a sprinkle of rock, and a smidgeon of jazz"- a genre Ortega explains as "a roadside motel love affair between old school outlaws and country darlings." The Rosebuds - Loud Planes Fly Low (Merge) .................................................. Loud Planes Fly Low is beautifully born of the struggle to define their relationship as bandmates and more importantly, friends outside of the context of marriage. It wasn't easy. Written and rewritten, recorded and re-recorded in fits and starts, Loud Planes Fly Low allowed Kelly and Ivan to have the very conversations about their relationship that they'd long avoided. Opening for Bon Iver in Indy this summer! Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones (Epitaph) .................................................. 2010 was a banner year for Frank. He was nominated for NME's Best Solo Artist award, won the prestigious Spirit Of Independence award from Kerrang, headlined a sold out Brixton Academy show in December, and his single "I Still Believe" caught fire at radio. Frank Turner's highly anticipated 4th album features contributions from Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay, folk singers Emily Barker and Chris TT, and Unbelievable Truth's Andy Yorke. Wooden Birds - Two Matchsticks (Barsuk) .................................................. After spending several years in NYC, frontman Andrew Kenny decided to make his way back to Austin, where he once led slowcore icons The American Analog Set into rivers of hypnotic grooves and dreamy guitars. Two Matchsticks finds Kenny continuing to explore his singer-songwriter side and show off his ability to pair atmospheric tendencies with sturdy folk-pop. While the new disc retains many of the same colors used in the past, it has moved away from the Southern charms of 2009's Magnolia and contains an energy not felt on its predecessor. That's really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring." Death Cab For Cutie - Codes and Keys (Barsuk) .................................................. Death Cab For Cutie will release their hugely anticipated new album, Codes and Keys, on May 31st. The multiple Grammy Award-nominated band will herald the album's release with a series of eagerly awaited live shows in and around their native Pacific Northwest. The album breaks away, though not completely, from the guitar-driven style of the band known so well to fans, making use of piano and electronically centered songs that will undoubtedly meet their expectations. The Cars - Move Like This (Hear) .................................................. After a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles made them one of the most popular American rock bands of the late 70s thru mid-80s, The Cars are back in action with their very first studio album in 24 years! Featuring original band members Ric Ocasek, David Robinson, Elliot Easton & Greg Hawkes, Move Like This recalls the alt-rock minimalistic sound The Cars are so well known for, yet at the same time, maintains significant relevance to the music of today. Flogging Molly - Speed Of Darkness (Borstal) .................................................. Their 5th, and arguably most important album. In the words of singer Dave King, "It wasn't the album we set out to write. It became the album we had to write". Speed Of Darkness was written in Detroit, MI and takes a hardnosed look at the economic collapse in the US: the causes and the direct effect it has had on everyday people. The Motor City serves as the album's muse and one of the biggest examples of what has gone wrong. While attacking much of the greed and ignorance responsible for where we are, the album also delivers a message of hope, humanity and the resilience of mankind. Tyler The Creator - Goblin (XL) .................................................. The last thing you'd say about the prolific young rap collective Odd Future is that they're boring...you know what else? They're really good. Especially their ringleader called Tyler The Creator. And you know what else? It's awesome to see them play live. - NPR. Over the past few months Tyler and Odd Future have been speeding from the margins of the Internet toward the center of forward-thinking music circles thanks to a barrage of self-released albums, mayhem-inducing live performances and an ability - at this point, it's verging on desire - to instantly polarize listeners. - NY Times -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://www.facebook.com/pages/Landlocked-Music/24299970219 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
