Come out and buy the new Gillian Welch album tonight- Tuesday June 28th! Bloomington loves Gill and Gill loves Bloomington, so we are eager and excited to host a listening party for the album starting at 6pm til close. We will be giving away really nice John Baizley posters with purchase of the CD as well as offer deep discounts on her entire back catalog! Look good this summer with our t-shirt blow out! We misprinted our last batch of shirts (whoops) but now you get the savings. Misprinted shirts $10 - the only thing that is wrong with them is that they do not say "Bloomington, IN" and the color is slightly different. Classic normal shirts are still $15. NEW ARRIVALS for June 28th .................................................. Apache Dropout - Shot Down 7" (Trouble in Mind) .................................................. This Bloomington trio took just about everybody by surprise with their LP released earlier this year on Family Vineyard; a full-tilt, f'ed-up, psyched-out boogie-fied garage stomper filtered through the musical ghosts of bands both past & present. A mutant Troggs stomp soaked in the sweat of John Lee Hooker & bops along like the bastard child of the Ohio Express & Sun Ra. The flipside is a barn-burning head-banger that ratchets up the intensity & sounds like an amphetamine-fueled sword fight between The Shadows Of Knight & The Deviants, with Sonny Alexander testifying like a tweaked out Richard Hell. This is full-on sanctified-psych - drop the needle on the wax & become a believer! Circuit des Yeux - Portrait LP (de Stijl) .................................................. Haley Fohr's 3rd LP and a massive step in her growth as a musician and artist. While pursuing a degree in recording and ethnomusicology at IU she has become proficient in the studio. The result- radically unexpected qualities of cohesion and hi fidelity posit Portrait's narratives in a space that we've yet to experience. The modest, clarion sparkle of Portrait would not have been expected, or even achievable, considering the arc of Symphone and Sirenum, and it stands as a cornerstone and a monument, a testament to the daily practice of channeling her 21 yr old, roiling emotions into sound recordings. Handsome Furs - Sound Kapital (Sub Pop) .................................................. The 3rd LP from Handsome Furs, the Canadian two-piece of husband and wife Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry. On this album they use keyboards and drum machines to forge life-affirming anthems taut with muscle and blood. These 9 songs of innocence and experience occasionally look ahead to a better world in the not-so-distant future, but Handsome Furs know what time it is: Now. They are fully engaged in the moment and their surroundings, wherever that may be. Jolie Holland - Pint of Blood (Anti) .................................................. Jolie returns to the simple, pared down approach that made early albums like Escondida fan favorites. With her band The Grand Chandeliers, she works through 10 songs with a loose, live in the studio feel that recalls the vibe of classic 70s album s from Neil Young to the Grateful Dead. Featuring her simplest, most elegant songs in a long while, Pint of Blood is a classic setting for the vocals the Village Voice called "sultry and sweet, despairing and lonely." The Night Beats - s/t (Trouble in Mind) .................................................. Any number of bands cite 60s Texas psych as an influence, but rarely does a group actually capture what made those bands special. Following their debut EP, The Night Beats have expanded on the bedroom immediacy of their first recordings to create an LP that perfectly captures and modernizes the hallucinogenic and exhilaratingly demonic aura of bands like The 13th Floor Elevators and Golden Dawn. With blazing guitar work and a razor sharp rhythm section Danny Lee Blackwell and company mutate conventional chords & progressions into a mind-blowing sonic sprawl. RIYL: Black Angels, Thee Oh Sees, 13th Floor Elevators, Electric Prunes SBTRKT - s/t (XL) .................................................. While he has had multiple releases in single and EP forms, this is SBTRKT's first full-length, and about that he says "This release is the culmination of a longer period of constant writing and collaboration, tracks on previous EPs were written as singular pieces. This record is much more of a whole project, more representative of my thoughts and ideas as an artist and each track was completed with the aim to be coherent together." Shabazz Palaces - Black Up (Sub Pop) .................................................. Shabazz Palaces emerged 2 years ago with an air of carefully cultivated mystery. The music was some of the most exploratory hip-hop of the year, an enticing batch of fragmented raps and woozy, disorienting beats. You could find precedents for this stuff- the amorphous wanderings of cLOUDDEAD, the jazz rap of the early 1990s- but these EPs were largely on some sui generis shit: Nothing else out there sounded quite like Shabazz Palaces. Featuring Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler of downtempo rap collective Digable Planets, but sounding very distinctive from that project. Recommended. Gillian Welch - The Harrow & the Harvest (Acony) .................................................. New release from the critically adored Americana singer/songwriter. The Harrow & The Harvest, Gillian's first album in eight years, is an all acoustic affair containing 10 new songs. The album was produced by David Rawlings and recorded at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, TN. FREE John Baizley posters with purchase of the CD as well as deep discounts on her entire back catalog! VA - Rave On Buddy Holly (Fantasy) .................................................. In his short-lived but extraordinary life, Buddy Holly left behind a body of work so enthralling, his enduring influence is nearly impossible to overstate. The melodic joy and fierce independent streak at the core of his artistry is profoundly felt on this collection. Features My Morning Jacket, Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Florence + the Machine, CeeLo Green, Paul McCartney, Lou Reed, Graham Nash, Detroit Cobras, Patti Smith, Nick Lowe, She & Him, Justin Townes Earle, Julian Casablancas, Karen Elson, Fiona Apple w/ Jon Brion, John Doe and more! VA - Red Hot + Rio 2 (Kela) .................................................. A contemporary take on the late 60s Brazilian Tropicalia movement. The album sheds new light to the songs of this influential, politically charged era, which changed the culture of the country forever, and continues to act as a beacon to countless musicians around the world. Featuring: Alice Smith, Aloe Blacc, Angelique Kidjo, Apollo Nove, Beck, Beirut, Brazilian Girls, Caetano Veloso, Carlinhous Brown, Ceu, David Byrne, Devendra Banhart, DJ Dolores, Gogol Bordello, Forro in the Dark, Javelin, John Legend, Jose Gonzalez, Los Vos Van, Madlib, Marisa Monte, Mayra Andrade, Mia Doi Todd, Money Mark, of Montreal, Os Mutantes, Rita Lee, Tha Boogie, Tom Ze, Trio Mocoto & Sen Jorge. Gloss Drop is an entrancing album that defies both categorization and easy analysis. Just as Mirrored was a massive leap on from the early EPs that first got them noticed, this is truly another seismic shift, propelling them into uncharted territory. It is a sheer sense of fun, unpredictability and inventiveness that sets Battles apart from every other contemporary group. Stanier sums this up succinctly: "I don't think challenging, new music has to be super serious all the time. That's really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring." Death Cab For Cutie - Codes and Keys (Barsuk) .................................................. Death Cab For Cutie will release their hugely anticipated new album, Codes and Keys, on May 31st. The multiple Grammy Award-nominated band will herald the album's release with a series of eagerly awaited live shows in and around their native Pacific Northwest. The album breaks away, though not completely, from the guitar-driven style of the band known so well to fans, making use of piano and electronically centered songs that will undoubtedly meet their expectations. The Cars - Move Like This (Hear) .................................................. After a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles made them one of the most popular American rock bands of the late 70s thru mid-80s, The Cars are back in action with their very first studio album in 24 years! Featuring original band members Ric Ocasek, David Robinson, Elliot Easton & Greg Hawkes, Move Like This recalls the alt-rock minimalistic sound The Cars are so well known for, yet at the same time, maintains significant relevance to the music of today. Flogging Molly - Speed Of Darkness (Borstal) .................................................. Their 5th, and arguably most important album. In the words of singer Dave King, "It wasn't the album we set out to write. It became the album we had to write". Speed Of Darkness was written in Detroit, MI and takes a hardnosed look at the economic collapse in the US: the causes and the direct effect it has had on everyday people. The Motor City serves as the album's muse and one of the biggest examples of what has gone wrong. While attacking much of the greed and ignorance responsible for where we are, the album also delivers a message of hope, humanity and the resilience of mankind. Tyler The Creator - Goblin (XL) .................................................. The last thing you'd say about the prolific young rap collective Odd Future is that they're boring...you know what else? They're really good. Especially their ringleader called Tyler The Creator. And you know what else? It's awesome to see them play live. - NPR. Over the past few months Tyler and Odd Future have been speeding from the margins of the Internet toward the center of forward-thinking music circles thanks to a barrage of self-released albums, mayhem-inducing live performances and an ability - at this point, it's verging on desire - to instantly polarize listeners. - NY Times -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://www.facebook.com/pages/Landlocked-Music/24299970219 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
