August 22-27th: Over the past few years, Spirit of 68 has piled up a nice little book of posters courtesy of our good friends at Mile 44 as well as several local artists. With a slate of new shows on the horizon and numerous dorm, house and apartment walls barren of artwork, they are clearing off the shelves and having a good old fashioned poster sale. Screen print posters from the past 3 years of shows including GUIDED BY VOICES, BRIGHT EYES, MUMFORD & SONS, THE HOLD STEADY, BLITZEN TRAPPER, LIARS, THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART, THE XX, HENRY ROLLINS, CALIFONE, CAMERA OBSCURA, DEERHOOF, KURT VILE and more! We have a limited quantity of each print so first come first serve and then they are gone forever and ever. $10 each! NEW ARRIVALS for August 23rd .................................................. Active Child - You Are All I See (Vagrant) .................................................. For Pat Grossi of Active Child, the last 2 years have been nothing short of enriching. Musically, he has worked within and appropriated a number of styles into his sound, from his early days singing with that heavenly voice as a choir boy to his more recent forays into laptop-assisted indiepop made in his bedroom. His sound is so wide-ranging that he has found himself touring with many notable acts of differing genres, including electronic producer James Blake, dreamy synth-pop of School of Seven Bells, and the indie bands White Lies and White Rabbits. The album is indebted to the sounds of the 80s, from New Order's drums-and-synths to danceable hip-hop beats, and it's all topped off with soaring R&B melodies. Zee Avi - Ghostbird (Brushfire) .................................................. For 25-year-old Malaysian singer Zee Avi, "Swell Window" is the gorgeous track that started the journey and also the opening track of her second album, Ghostbird. "It's a song about seizing the moment," she says, "and for me, a new direction and a new voice came and stayed." In the 2 years since her debut was released, Avi's very free spirit has wandered from major music festivals (SXSW, Bonnaroo) to huge tours (Lilith Fair) back to her homeland of Sarawak, Borneo Island. Just 4 years ago, Avi was a former art student in Kuala Lumpur who posted a song on YouTube to catch up with a friend and was quite surprised to find herself the toast of the Internet when thousands of strangers discovered her effortlessly stunning voice. While critics were comparing her chilled-out, jazzy, ukulele-based songs to Billie Holiday and Cat Power she was continuing to make visual art and remaining her buoyant, whimsical self. Gabe Dixon - One Spark (Fantasy) .................................................. Those familiar with Dixon's prior work may be surprised by his accomplishment with One Spark. All of Dixon's prodigious talent has thickened into a powerful collection of masterful songwriting and performance, giving us as pure a listening experience as we're likely to find. These songs proudly wear their heart on their sleeve, conveying very human emotions, the things we all want and need but often remain just out of reach: connection, romance and the courage to follow our dreams. Hotfox - You, Me, and the Monster (Roaring Colonel) .................................................. Hotfox is comprised of 5 members, of which 3 currently attend IU. The band was recently voted Bloomington's Best Local Band of 2010 (Indiana Daily Student). The album was recorded at Queen Size Twin Air studios in Indianapolis and was produced by Tyler J. Watkins. The band's inaugural album features guest instrumentation from a host of Indy's music mainstays, including Jon Rogers of Everything, Now!, Dan Snodgrass of The Bonesetters, Casey Tennis of Pravada, Ryan Reidy of Thunders, and Gavin Wilkinson along with The Bears of Blue River. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Mirror Traffic (Matador) .................................................. Coming off a triumphant year of Pavement reunion shows, Stephen Malkmus returned to the studio with Beck producing to record his 5th solo album, Mirror Traffic. Early press reactions are calling this gorgeous, crystalline production "the album we've been waiting 10 years for him to make," and it certainly contains the most heartfelt and indelible songs he's written in years. Gone are the long guitar workouts and jams that marked the last couple of Jicks albums, replaced by incredibly catchy and endearing pop songs. Stephin Merritt - Obscurities (Merge) .................................................. Merge Records presents Obscurities by Stephin Merritt, a collection of Merritt's hard-to-find recordings dating back to his time on Merge (1994 1999) and prior, as well as five previously unreleased tracks. In 1999, The Magnetic Fields' three-CD collection 69 Love Songs established Stephin Merritt as one of this generation's most talented songwriters. The Los Angeles Times hails Merritt as "one of indie-rock's most acclaimed figures" while Pitchfork calls him "smart, thorough, and unerringly precise." Stone Coal White - s/t (Cali-Tex) .................................................. Only the 10th record from DJ Shadow's long running Cali-Tex imprint, Stone Coal White fits the label's bill of unearthing the most wasted and primitive funk records ever recorded to a T. Some will recognize "You Know" from the black-psych mix bible Chains & Black Exhaust, but as the group's two 45s exist in single digit quantities, only a handful have heard the rest of this Ho Chi Min City-damaged oeuvre. Their two 45s have been bolstered with four previously unissued tracks, found in the basement of a now-condemned motorcycle gang hideout in Dayton, Ohio. We Are Augustines - Rise Ye Sunken Ships (Atlantic) .................................................. Much of the material documents the most traumatic period of Billy McCarthy's life in which he lost both his schizophrenic mother and his brother, James, to suicide. Several songs were recorded with producer Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene), and is a gripping eulogy for this once-resilient spirit who succumbed to the pressures bearing down on him from both within and without. For McCarthy and Sanderson (both formerly in Pela), it is the culmination of an extraordinary labour of love; a journey that has seen both suffer a collision of professional hardship and personal tragedy and yet come through strong the other side. VA - Muppets: The Green Album (Disney) .................................................. The most celebrational, tributational, compilational new album from today's most sensational artists! Chock full of 12 new versions of favorite classic Muppets songs performed by contemporary rock and alternative artists. Muppets The Green album follows in the footsteps created by Nightmare Revisited and Almost Alice where contemporary artists put their unique sound to memorable Disney franchises. This time artists such as OK-GO, Weezer, Andrew Bird and My Morning Jacket will revisit some of The Muppets classics like: Rainbow Connection, It's Not Easy Being Green, The Muppets Show Theme and more! Arcade Fire's 2011 Grammy Award winning Album of the Year, The Suburbs, gets a deluxe anniversary CD / DVD reissue. The CD includes two new tracks (one featuring vocals by David Byrne) and an extended version of "Wasted Hours," in addition to the original album. The DVD includes the Spike Jonze film Scenes from the Suburbs, as well as the companion documentary Behind the Scenes from the Suburbs, and the official music video for "The Suburbs." The exclusive booklet features lyrics and 80 pages of photos taken during the film. Imelda May - Mayhem (Decca) .................................................. Imelda May, born in Dublin and raised in the Liberties, may be an unknown name to some, but to many she is already a superstar. She is unmistakable both in her music (a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly that wouldn't be out of place in a David Lynch film) and her style, with a solitary curl and shock of blonde in her jet black hair. In Ireland, her debut album 'Love Tattoo', which she recorded and released on her own label, has gone Triple Platinum. She has shared a stage with Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, David Gilmour, Sharon Shannon, Jeff Beck, Shane Macgowan, Kirsty McCall, Van Morrison, Lionel Richie, Wanda Jackson, Paul Brady and Meatloaf. And now, with the release of her new album "Mayhem", she is about to go stellar. Washed Out - Within and Without (Sub Pop) .................................................. After a string of acclaimed EPs and appearances at the Pitchfork Festival and on the TV series Portlandia, Ernest Greene releases his first full-length under his Washed Out moniker, Within and Without. Recorded with Ben Allen, who worked on Merriweather Post Pavilion and Halcyon Digest, the album has the pedigree to be a synth pop critical darling. Free bonus 7" with purchase while supplies last! 311 - Universal Pulse (ATO) .................................................. New studio album from 311. 8.4 million albums sold in the US throughout their career! Album was produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Aerosmith) and was mixed by Chad Sexton. The album was recorded & mixed at 311’s own Hive Studio in Los Angeles. Nikki Jean - Pennies in a Jar (S-Curve) .................................................. Pennies In A Jar began with an idea- Nikki Jean would travel cross-country, working on songs with collaborators who would top any list of the greatest songwriters of all time. The plan was inspired, but also wild and improbable. Who could imagine that a new artist, still in her early 20s, could reach out to a wish list of Hall of fame songwriters, and that so many would say yes? What emerged is a compact musical history: the girl group sound, Motown, classic pop, Philly Soul, a place where country literally meets hip-hop, linked by Nikki Jean’s warmth and her infectious joy. Collaborations with Bob Dylan, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Carly Simon, Bobby Braddock, Lupe Fiasco, Black Thought (The Roots), Thom Bell, Lamont Dozier, Paul Williams, Luigi Creatore, and Carole King. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://www.facebook.com/pages/Landlocked-Music/24299970219 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic or http://plus.google.com/102301181209961197707/ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
