Heads up! Sunday October 2nd at IU Cinema, a special presentation of Director Brent Green's film Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then is happening. The film, which belongs firmly to the American Eccentric School, tells the true story of Leonard Wood, a hardware store clerk in Kentucky who built a crazy-quilt house in the 1970s as a healing machine for his wife, Mary, hoping to save her from cancer. The film is accompanied by live music, musicians include Brent Green (narration, guitar), Donna K (live sound effects), Brendan Canty (drums, Fugazi), Jim White (drums, Dirty Three), Howe Gelb (piano, Giant Sand), Drew Henkels (guitar, theramin), and John Michael Swartz (cello). Tickets are $10 and available at the IU Auditorium box office. Preview here: http://vimeo.com/groups/7286/videos/10315440 NEW ARRIVALS for September 20th .................................................. Tori Amos - Night of Hunters (Decca) .................................................. In her own words: "I have used the structure of a classical song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself, allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter. One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter & hunted and how both exist within us." Boots Electric - Honkey Kong (Dangerbird) .................................................. After creating three albums of dirty and danceable garage rock anthems, Hollywood's favorite son and Eagles of Death Metal frontman, Jesse "The Devil" Hughes, is unveiling his solo debut as Boots Electric. It was produced by Tony Hoffer and co-written with legendary keyboardist Money Mark, best known for his many collaborations with the Beastie Boys. Vinyl in 2 weeks. Cave - Neverendless (Drag City) .................................................. Cave's first recording as a 4-piece. As a result, Neverendless is more concise than any other Cave record, despite clocking in at over 40 minutes. With only four designated inputters, we hear a thicker, denser sound with the shop light burning bright on all those nuances. You can say what you want about music and how things change: Repetition, heaviness and all else Cave does is a part of some very human music buoying on the sonic sea Cave fans have been floating in for some time. Cave just keep on with the jamz. Neu! meets Hawkwind? Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Hysterical (CYHSY) .................................................. Their first new album in more than 3 years, it marks a major milestone in their continuing evolution. Born out of an intensely collaborative process in which songs were constructed, dismantled, and then rebuilt anew, the album finds the band their most confident and creative, expertly expanding upon its already distinctive sound. From the chrome-plated licks to the sheets of eddying synths and emotive motorik pulsebeat, the band delivers up sonically provocative pop music that is simultaneously jubilant, mesmeric, and altogether infectious. Ivy - All Hours (Nettwerk) .................................................. All Hours is the band's fifth full-length (not including 2002's all-covers collection, Guestroom). Ivy was formed in 1994 by multi instrumentalists Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and Parisian-born singer, Dominique Durand. The band has been hailed by critics as a "distinctive brand of evocative, bittersweet pop." Jayhawks - Mockingbird Time (Rounder) .................................................. During their heyday in the first half of the 90s, The Jayhawks perfected a captivating sound that seamlessly blended the elegant folk-rock of The Byrds, the adventurousness of Buffalo Springfield, the hippiebilly soulfulness of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the soaring harmonies of The Beach Boys. This time around, The Jayhawks themselves are revered as icons by the young bands carrying on those same traditions. On their 8th album, and the first with the original lineup since 1995's Tomorrow The Green Grass, they're once again pushing the envelope in rarefied dynamism and grace. The album's shapes and textures range from string-laden grandeur and widescreen vistas to streamlined 12-string jangle and amphetamine frenzy. Playing at the Bluebird on 10/12! Jens Lekman - An Argument With Myself EP (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. In the symbology of Lekman's songbook, motion is a means to stave off insanity or succumb to it and the songs on Jens' new EP deal with many types of movement, both big and small, from why he moved to Melbourne to the societal change/movement in his old hometown of Gothenburg to simple map directions. With more fractured textures that combine horns, flutes, string swells and arpeggiated guitars, the opening of the EP finds Jens in constant state of transition, musically, as well. Megafaun - s/t (Hometapes) .................................................. The trail discovered by 2008's Bury The Square, blazed by 2009's Gather, Form & Fly, and tended by 2010's Heretofore has run into a wide and rushing river. The band we know as Megafaun, born alongside Bon Iver in the ashes that rose from DeYarmond Edison (Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Phil Cook's former band with Justin Vernon), has woven years of writing, touring, and living into a new sonic language. Critically-praised and publicly-loved for their ability to speak in the many tongues of American musical history. Nurses - Dracula (Dead Oceans) .................................................. Dracula is steeped in the strange pop brew that bore Apple's Acre, with the band's unmistakable elastic melodies, heady pop hooks and unconventional knack for catchy songwriting that gets under your skin. But where Apple's Acre was an insular album, recorded primarily in an attic in Idaho using just an internal Macbook microphone and primitive recording software, Dracula is bursting. It's bolder, heavier, with deep grooves, dubby basslines and a focus on rhythm. It's an album with pure physical qualities. Playing at Russian Recording on 10/21! Opeth - Heritage (Roadrunner) .................................................. The band's roots in the doom-laden shade of occult-infused Scandinavian death metal and dark romanticism are undeniable and will never elicit apology. But the transcendent emotional and melodic heights achieved on their 10th album marks a new chapter in the storied quintet's career. Band leader Mikael Akerfeldt has reshaped the pathway forward for his artistic vehicle without sacrificing the hard won spiritualism of previous endeavors. A mind-boggling dense maze of tempo shifts, off-time signatures, percussive experimentation and warped rhythms, expertly melded together by a myriad range of emotional outpouring and breezy melodic optimism which soars above the songs like a woodland spirit surveying its forest. Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam Twenty (Monkeywrench) .................................................. In honor of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary, award-winning director Cameron Crowe created a definitive portrait of the seminal band carved from over 1,200 hours of footage, plus 24 hours of recently shot concert and interview footage. Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band's formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after their rise to mega-stardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a work culture that would sustain them. To accompany the film, PJ is also releasing a soundtrack that includes 29 rare and unreleased tracks on 2 CDs, hand-picked by Crowe with his liner notes and photos in a 36-page booklet, packaged in a hard bound book. Social Climbers - s/t [reissue] (Drag City) .................................................. Remastered and expanded edition of this 1980 album from the No Wave/Post Punk band with Indiana roots, including 2 bonus tracks. Social Climbers made sounds that were of their environs yet remarkably unique, leaving an indelible stamp on the scene while somehow managing to slither undetected out of all the history books. A downtown NY art band as much as any other, they also had actual musicianship that many of their contemporaries lacked, and in trade dismissed and essentially protested the snotty pretensions that drove many others within the scene. Social Climbers are an absolute post-punk blueprint: fat bass (often two), guitar, drum machine, feverish vocals, and organ. Their lone, self-titled album is agitated and impossibly wild, yet danceable and composed. Tammar - Visits (Suicide Squeeze) .................................................. Bloomington's Tammar pulls off a pretty incredible trick with each and every one of its post-punk anthems, probably something of which the band doesn't take much note. They mine the classic sounds of paranoia, malaise and misanthropy (Joy Division, Velvet Underground, The Fall), and fill it all with so much exuberance and joy of playing that each song becomes a triumph over anxiety and ennui. Visits finds each of the band's members stepping outside of themselves, but not in a snake-poison-ingesting, flopping-on-the-floor sense. It's something else, something full of wonder.
