Can-O-Worms weekend starts this Friday right here at Landlocked. Perhaps you heard about how much fun last year's event was? Now's your chance to get in on the ground floor of some good times. What is Can-O-Worms? It's a 2-day rock and roll fest featuring some of our favorite bands in Bloomington (and nearby). Whether you're into psychedelic garage rock (Apache Dropout), mod power pop (The Happy Thoughts), brooding dirge rock (Circuit des Yeux), or "other" (Open Sex), there's a little something for everyone we think-- at least if you enjoy modern guitar-based rock music. There are a few of you here, right? Also, the Saturday show at Russian Recording functions as the Tammar record release show, so that's reason enough to come out. And, remember, if you bought their album during their listening party, you'll be on the list. The kick-off show is Friday here at Landlocked starting around 5-ish with Jerome & the Psychics and Vacation Club. $5 gets you into any and all shows thereafter. You want to see one band? $5. You want to see 14 bands? $5. Specifics here: http://canoworms.tumblr.com/ Also! On Friday, October 7th at 6pm - the acoustic duo of James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg will play selections from their new album 'Avos' on Tompkins Square Records. Not since Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn's partnerships of the 1970s has there been such a happy reconciliation of Merrie Old England and the good old USA, in which baroque meets the blues, music-hall steps out to ragtime, and Benjamin Britten sits down with Blind Blake. James Elkington released a string of albums as leader of The Zincs for Thrill Jockey Records. He also moonlights convincingly as the guitar player in Jon Langford's (of The Mekons) Skull Orchard as well as in The Horse's Ha (that he shares with Freakwater's Janet Bean). Nathan Salsburg is best known as an archivist and producer for the Alan Lomax Archive, curator of the Twos & Fews vernacular-music imprint on Drag City Records, and host of the "Root Hog Or Die" program on East Village Radio. NEW ARRIVALS for September 27th .................................................. Bonnie Prince Billy & Phantom Family Halo - Mindeater (Knitting Factory) .................................................. Having met each other through mutual friend/former SLINT bassist, Todd Brashear, The Phantom Family folks hit it off quite nicely with Bonny Billy last year when he joined them for a performance of the song at an anniversary party they were asked to play with Roky Erikson. That was summer of 2010 in their shared hometown of Louisville. Since then, the two forces have joined again, not only to record their psyched-out, full-band, live-in-studio rendition of an Everly Brothers' classic, but also to cast a few spells of their own. The resulting tracks, The Mindeater, Roki for Now, and Suddenly the Darkness, were stripped to the bone and recorded to tape on the second floor of a funeral home where Cipolla lived. Vinyl version also available. Dum Dum Girls - Only in Dreams (Sub Pop) .................................................. Dum Dum Girls' second full length, Only in Dreams, is a great leap forward for a gifted songwriter and an equally gifted band. Only in Dreams blends deeply personal lyrics inspired by the death of singer Dee Dee's mother and the strain of separation from loved ones with the band's signature blend of 60s girl-gang pop, the primitive propulsion of the Cramps and the moody atmospherics of Mazzy Star. The album is the first to feature the playing and singing of all four members, and months on the road and full-on studio production have molded Dum Dum Girls into a formidable rock band. Free 7" with purchase! Gem Club - Breakers (Hardly Art) .................................................. Soft-focus pop duo Gem Club are Christopher Barnes and Kristen Drymala. Together, they create cavernous-sounding piano-based ballads that, despite their earthly trappings, feel truly ethereal, as if they're being piped in from another planet bereft of gravity. Gem Club buries vague but revealing lyrics in delicate, sometimes somber, sometimes lighthearted melodies. There is a balance between pain and hope, a sense of growth and catharsis spawned from harder days, all complemented by the breathy vocals and symphonic instrumentation. Will Hoge - Number Seven (Ryko) .................................................. Critically-acclaimed Nashville singer/songwriter Will Hoge's seventh studio album. Its eleven songs survey the struggles of the heart that are Hoge's songwriting stock in trade while revealing enticing range and freshness on the sonic front. Acting as his own producer for the first time, Will says this album feels truer to his personal vision than any he's made. Stanley Jordan - Friends (Mack Ave) .................................................. A release that its creator Stanley Jordan cites as his most realized project to date finds him in challenging company: fellow strummers Charlie Hunter, Russell Malone, Bucky Pizzarelli and Mike Stern; saxmen (and label mate) Kenny Garrett and Ronnie Laws; N'awlins trumpeter Nicholas Payton and the renowned violinist Regina Carter. Another label mate, Christian McBride, guests on bass when not handled by Stanley's long-time trio bassist Charnett Moffett. Kenwood Dennard of his trio holds down the drum chair. Truly, a collection of Friends whose benefit push Stanley into a heightened musical reality. Hanni el Khatib - Will the Guns Come Out (Innovative) .................................................. With his sinewy guitar and wry, whiskey-glazed voice, Hanni creates a mix of bluesy garage-rock soul meets malt shop music for those who drink them spiked with bourbon. Hanni El Khatib grew up in San Franscisco. The son of Palestinian and Filipino immigrants and the first American in his family, he became obsessed with classic Americana and pop culture of the 50s & 60s. Influenced by pioneers of early rock and R&B (Johnny Burnette, Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash), he created a musical aesthetic to match his vision. Hanni serves as singer, songwriter & producer for his one-man band that is part blues, part garage rock, part soul, part folk & part doo whop. Dan Mangan - Oh Fortune (Arts & Crafts) .................................................. In a few short years, Dan Mangan has gone from globetrotting folk crooner to one of independent music's most promising storytellers. No longer armed with just an acoustic guitar slung across his back, Dan returns on the back of his sophomore album Nice, Nice Very Nice, which earned him a Polaris Music Prize shortlist, a spot at Glastonbury and shows with The Walkmen, Decemberists and Okkervil River, to name but a few. On Dan's 3rd album, he explores the genre's boundaries, demonstrating Dan's impressive growth in writing and arranging. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Cave Singers) and now flanked with a stellar supporting cast, the new album is bigger and more challenging, though still infused with the signature wit and wisdom that have made Dan such a fan favourite wherever he goes. Mastodon - The Hunter (Reprise) .................................................. The Hunter, the follow-up to 2009's critically embraced Crack The Skye, was recorded in the band's hometown of Atlanta as well as in LA with producer Mike Elizondo. As with all of their albums, Mastodon, which is bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Keliher, and drummer Brann Dailor, decided to take a completely different tack and musical approach to the music on this album. Free poster with purchase! Mekons - Ancient & Modern (Bloodshot) .................................................. Mekons take you for a walk down memory lane, to the world as it was just before WWI - to the Edwardian Era, to the Naughty Naughties; cricket on the village green, punting down the river in a striped blazer and boater, off with the hounds, picnic hampers, community singing, mistresses and wives, mysticism, secret societies, dangerous poetry, radical modern art, Freud, national strikes, revolution, anarchists, and bombers! Nirvana - Nevermind [deluxe] (Geffen) .................................................. Released in September 1991, Nirvana's sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington, cult band to generational spokesmen who'd unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. The Nirvana Nevermind 20th anniversary reissue is available as a 2CD Deluxe Edition featuring the remastered album and B-sides (Smart Studio sessions, boombox rehearsals & BBC sessions), a 4LP, 180g heavyweight vinyl edition featuring the same 40 tracks as the Deluxe Edition, and a remastered CD of the original album. The Paramount concert, transferred from 16mm film and multi-track audio, is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film. Sleeper Agent - Celabrasion (Mom & Pop) .................................................. Describing their music as akin to The Ronettes on speed, Aleeper Agent make hook-laden skuzzy garage-pop rooted in both soul and Southern rock - all fueled by drummer Justin Wilson s manic rhythms and the dueling harmonizing vocals of vocalist Alex Kandel and guitarist Tony Smith, who is also the band's songwriting force of nature. Not only do they cite such musical artists as Jay Reatard, The Strokes, Pixies, T-Rex, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin as influences, they are also influenced by horror and sci-fi flicks as well as stand-up comedians. "We just want people to listen to the music and have fun," says Smith. "Its pretty obvious that's what we want when you listen to the album." Stepkids - s/t (Stones Throw) .................................................. Every member of The Stepkids is steeped in experience and proficiency beyond their years. They've all played in other bands for so long that when they decided to create this outfit, they agreed not to bother crafting a sound that fits today's feel but to draw influence from their favorites through the years. Folk and psychedelic elements from Rotary Connection and The Free Design are there, while groove and song structure might allude to an early Sly & The Family Stone b-side or the debut record from The Parliaments. If you stretch your ear enough, hints of Yes, Can and even Steely Dan can be heard. Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power Live DVD (MVD) .................................................. Through an online contest, six fans were selected to film Iggy & the Stooges' legendary September 3, 2010 reunion as the band performed "Raw Power" to a stunned crowd at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival. Following the performance, the fans met and interviewed the band. Experience the fans' and joy as they witness a classic performance and meet their heroes face to face. "In the Hands of the Fans" brings the fans closer to the band and the music closer to you. Wilco - The Whole Love (dBpm) .................................................. This CD boasts a vinyl-styled package with gatefold and cardboard wrap and includes a 20 page booklet. The Deluxe CD includes a 52 page book and two discs in oversized CD wallets. Disc two has four bonus tracks that do not appear on the regular full length CD. The vinyl is a 180 gram, double LP with gatefold. Audiophile wax, pressed by Pallas in Diepholz, Germany. Includes copy of CD in cardboard sleeve and one Bonus Track not on the regular full length album. Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation (Fat Possum) .................................................. Twenty-two year old Trevor Powers, whose musical venture is called Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he's been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living. Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic.
