Big week for shows here in Bloomy! Live favorites all the way from Puerto Rico, Davila 666 tonight at The Bishop. Hip hop strongman Murs at Rhino's on Thursday. Friday brings a double dip of do-not-miss performances. The Bishop is hosting Jonathan Richman (formerly of Modern Lovers, of course.) The Buskirk-Chumley Theater has living legend Booker T Jones (perhaps you recognize the name Booker T and the MGs?) Few realize that Booker attended college here in Bloomington in the 60s, while he was already recording hits for Stax Records, so this is a homecoming of sorts and a sure to be special night. Come to the FREE after-party at the Root Cellar too! Have we mentioned Black Friday yet? Nope not yet we have not. This year there are going to be some pretty great titles released the day after Thanksgiving. Beatles, Black Keys, Iron & Wine, Sharon Jones, Wilco, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Soundgarden, Civil Wars, Kings of Leon, Tom Petty, Phish, Fear, Dr Dog and much more! Click here so you can prepare your wishlist! http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases NEW ARRIVALS for October 25th .................................................. The Beets - Let the Poison Out (Hardly Art) .................................................. Over the course of 4 years, the Beets have released 2 LPs and 3 7"s for Captured Tracks and toured nationally with Vivian Girls and Mountain Goats. Let the Poison Out was captured on tape by Gary Olson of Ladybug Transistor and finds the Beets shaking off the lo-fi brashness of their first two LPs. The jangly guitar, brutal and surreal lyrics, and catchy and breezy sing-a-long songs that people have come to worship by the band, have remained. JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound - Want More (Bloodshot) .................................................. Welcome JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound: a group who have heating up Chicago the past few years with their brand of Motown throwbacks with a post-punk edge, a charismatic frontman with movie-star looks, and plenty of soul to spare. Check out their soulful cover of a Wilco favorite to whet your palate. Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto (Capitol) .................................................. Coldplay's 5th album, Mylo Xyloto (pronounced my-lo zy-letoe). Produced by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, with Eno-fication and additional composition by Brian Eno, Mylo Xyloto follows 2008's Viva La Vida, which charted at No. 1 in 36 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Deer Tick - Divine Providence (Partisan) .................................................. The band wanted to make a record that was truer to their live set: raw, loud, heartfelt, and completely uninterested in whatever the hell the rest of the music industry is up to. The band recruited the team of Adam Landry and Justin Collins, who produced the debut album of McCauley's side-project Middle Brother. The results are unlike anything Deer Tick album, yet they achieve something that is more raw, real, and raucous than anything they have released to date. Dirty Projectors + Bjork - Mount Wittenberg Orca (Domino) .................................................. Mount Wittenberg Orca is the 7 song suite composed by David Longstreth for his band, Dirty Projectors, and Bjork. The suite was originally performed as one off benefit concert in 2009, but the work was so strong they got back together a year later to make this stunning recording. Dntel - Life is Full of Possibilities [deluxe reissue] (Sup Pop) .................................................. Jimmy Tamborello records, releases, and performs under the name Dntel. This is an expanded, remastered, 10th-anniversary reissue of Dntel's album Life Is Full of Possibilities (originally released by Plug Research). This reissue includes copious bonus material in the form of new remixes, outtakes, b-sides and the Ben Gibbard collaboration "(This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan," the genesis of The Postal Service. El Rego - s/t (Daptone) .................................................. A true legend of African Soul Music. Here for the 1st time on album are 12 of his greatest recordings from the late 60s and early 70s hand-picked by Daptone. Afro-Soul collector/DJ Frank Gossner had spent years combing West Africa tracking down 45's by Theophile Do Rego (aka El Rego) before finally meeting him face to face in his home in Benin. The music varies in style and rhythm: traditional rhythms of Benin played with modern instruments, John Lee Hooker-esque blues, Fela Kuti inspired afro-beat, afro-cuban claves, and straight-up James Brown style funk. The record is teeming with breaking drums and twanging guitars, twisting basslines and undulating percussion. Honey Honey - Billy Jack (Lost Highway) .................................................. Burlap & opals. Moonshine & macrobiotics. Shaken & soothed. How Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe managed to reconcile not just polemics, but seemingly opposed realities for their sexually tinged, bruised knee honeysuckle take on roots music has to be heard to be understood. Somehow the 20-somethings figured out that it's the extremes that define the middle, whether embracing the big mistakes in the bluesy smoulder, the romantic doubt, or the euphoric romp-age that embraces the arc debauchery completely. Justice - Audio Video Disco (Elektra) .................................................. A brand-new album from Justice, the French duo formed by Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay - the band of a whole generation. When the two friends were still bright students in graphic design, in 2003 they made Justice a place to experiment a hybrid genre between music and image, which blends pop and electronic borders, and showcases the talents of two fascinating, passionate pop culture craftsmen, bored with hierarchy. John Prine - The Singing Mailman Delivers (Oh Boy) .................................................. Specially priced double CD set of John Prine's earliest recordings, one year before his debut, with classic hits & one unreleased song. Both discs consist of recently unearthed tapes- the first CD is an August 1970 recording of songs that would make up his first album at the WFMT studios in Chicago. These songs were recorded immediately after John's interview with the legendary Studs Terkel. Disc 2 is a live set from November 1970- featuring versions of many of the same songs- recorded during John's residency at Chicago's Fifth Peg. She & Him - A Very She & Him Christmas (Merge) .................................................. A Very She & Him Christmas is a wonderful collection of holiday tunes from two of music's most impressive artists Zooey Deschanel (She) & M. Ward (Him). Inspired by seminal holiday albums by the likes of The Carpenters, Vince Guaraldi, Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and more, She & Him have set out to create an intimate holiday recording of Christmas classics that helps bring new emotions out of old songs. Strange Boys - Live Music (Rough Trade) .................................................. Live Music (as in, living the music) is Austin, TX's The Strange Boys' third album, after The Strange Boys and Girls Club (2008), and Be Brave (2010). Live Music was recorded in April 2011 at the Austin home studio of Spoon drummer Jim Eno, who produced the fourteen track album. Mark Sultan - Whatever I Want / Whenever I Want (In the Red) .................................................. Better known as BBQ of The King Khan & BBQ Show. Sultan has been pounding out his own stew of R&B, Rockabilly, Garage, Doo-Wop, Psychedelia, Punk and whatnot since he was a mere child fronting Montreal's Spaceshits. Releasing a slew of albums and touring relentlessly, Sultan has established quite a reputation as a songsmith and vocalist. Recently he went into the studio and ended up with more than 2 LPs worth of material. After trying to whittle it down to one LP, In The Red decided to simply release it all as one CD or 2 seperate LPs. Tom Waits - Bad as Me (Anti) .................................................. Tom's first album of new music in 7 years finds him in possibly the finest voice of his career and at the height of his songwriting powers, working with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer Kathleen Brennan. From the opening horn-fueled chug to the closing barroom chorale, Bad As Me displays the full career range of Waits' songwriting, from beautiful ballads to avant cinematic soundscapes.
