Yesterday, the record store world was saddened to hear about the loss of a midwestern institution: ear-X-tacy in Louisville, KY has shut down. Early on in our adult lives, that store served as a concept for us as to what a cool record store could be. As they said in their closing press release, "Please keep the music alive. Support the incredible music scene and independent businesses we have here! Until you leave this great city, you cannot realize what a unique treasure we have here. Embrace it, celebrate it, and promote it. Love it." This is true there, as well as here. Be sure to support your friends and all local biz this coming holiday season. How about some good news from Louisville to balance it out on this slow release week? Cropped Out is a new festival with a bunch of lesser known talent that you might never have a chance to see in the midwest, and certainly not all at once. Scratch Acid (!), Coliseum, Young Widows, Bill Orcutt, Sun Araw, MV/EE, and tons more. November 11-13th, check it if you can: http://croppedoutmusic.com/ Have we mentioned Black Friday yet? Nope not yet we have not. This year there are going to be some pretty great titles released the day after Thanksgiving. Beatles, Black Keys, Iron & Wine, Sharon Jones, Wilco, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Soundgarden, Civil Wars, Kings of Leon, Tom Petty, Phish, Fear, Dr Dog and much more! Click here so you can prepare your wishlist! http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases NEW ARRIVALS for November 1st .................................................. Beach Boys - Smile Sessions 2CD/2LP/box (Capitol) .................................................. The long awaited release of the Brian Wilson and Beach Boys masterpiece, Smile Sessions. Rolling Stone recently called SMiLE the most famous unfinished album in rock & roll history. In several sessions between the summer of 1966 and early 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album that was intended to follow Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and SMiLE has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, it presents an in-depth overview of the recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world. Available in 2CD, 2LP, and 5CD/2LP/2x7" box versions. Blouse - s/t (Captured Tracks) .................................................. Debut LP by Portland trio Blouse. The closing bars of Portland trio Blouse's "Videotapes" find Charlie Hilton singing but trailing off and never finishing her thought- "What it was like to see you again, what it was like" And you kind of figure there is no conclusion, or at least not one happy enough to repeat. Or maybe the story ends when the song starts, like love is just a cycle and you find the key when you hit rewind, so Hilton's answer is scored by the woozy intro synth that dips in and out of tune, mimicking a nervous, dreaming brain flirting with lovesick loss of consciousness, or as if the band over-drank to fight off butterflies and now they're staggering to right themselves. Brite Futures - Dark Past (Atlantic) .................................................. New album from Seattle's fun-loving quintet Brite Futures (f/k/a Natalie Portman's Shaved Head), is a youthful swaggering mix of synth-happy pop, rock, funk, disco, and New Wave that the band likes to describe as "punk rock Abba disco Osmonds with chainsaws." It challenges the notion that irresistible pop can only be peddled by solo artists propped up by big-name songwriters and major labels. Decemberists - Long Live the King EP (Capitol) .................................................. As a fitting bookend to the most successful year of the band's career, The Decemberists will release a new EP entitled Long Live The King. Similar to the critically acclaimed, chart-topping bow The King is Dead, the EP is a mostly-acoustic set of 6 Americana-based songs, recorded around the same time as The King is Dead, and including their stunning cover of the Grateful Dead track "Row Jimmy." The EP was produced once again by Tucker Martine. Florence + the Machine - Ceremonials (Universal) .................................................. Florence + The Machine is the recording name of English musician Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her voice. Florence + The Machine's sound has been described as a combination of various genres, including rock and soul. The band's music received praise across the music media, especially from BBC, before they gained mainstream success. The band's debut album, Lungs, was released in 2009 to critical acclaim. Ceremonials is the band's sophomore release and features the lead single "What the Water Gave Me." Deluxe edition includes 4 extra tracks; one demo and 3 b-sides. Mojo Magazine - George Harrison cover .................................................. As the 10th anniversary of his death approaches, MOJO celebrates the life and music of "the quiet Beatle". Michael Simmons talks to Paul, Ringo, Pattie, Olivia, Tom Petty, and many more to cast new light on the man that millions adored but few truly knew. Plus, Loudon Wainwright, Bjork, Jeff Bridges, Beirut, Waterboys, Public Image Ltd, Tom Waits and a FREE CD of George Harrison covers from Yim Yames, Richie Havens, Felice Bros, Ron Sexsmith and many more. Carrie Newcomer - Everything is Everywhere (Available Light) .................................................. A love for haunting melody lines, an attraction to compelling rhythms and a sense of deep spiritual grounding are the connecting threads in this new collaborative project between Bloomington folk singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer and the famous Indian family of sarod players, Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan. It is the aural embodiment of East meets West with an elegant and extraordinary bridge between Indian classical tradition and Western songwriting form. Accompanied by Grammy-nominated percussionist Jim Brock and pianist Gary Walters on this album. Profits from Everything is Everywhere will benefit the vital international work of The Interfaith Hunger Initiative. Lou Reed & Metallica - Lulu (WB) .................................................. Lulu was inspired by German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind's plays 'Earth Spirit' and 'Pandora's Box', which tell a story of a young abused dancer's life and relationships and are now collectively known as the "Lulu Plays." Originally the lyrics and musical landscape were sketched out by Lou for a theatrical production in Berlin, but after coming together with Metallica for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in NY in 2009, all guilty parties knew they wanted to make more music together. Lou was inspired enough by that performance to ask the band to join him in taking his theatrical piece to the next level. Soft Moon - Total Decay (Captured Tracks) .................................................. Follow up to The Soft Moon's critically acclaimed self-titled LP! Soft Moon's impressive, immersive debut appeared courtesy of Captured Tracks at the end of 2010- a time when folks were more concerned with Holidays than post-apocalyptic industrial-pop- so it managed to escape some of the "best of" lists it should've haunted. The San Francisco trio, led by founder Luis Vasquez and featuring an ancillary member who does flickering live visuals that'd make sense with Bauhaus the band and/or the movement. The title track's a swirling, heaving trip, one more deeply entrenched in nihilistic bleakness than previous material.
