The name Plaid Friday celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the fun and enjoyable alternative to the big box store "Black Friday", and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays. Let's take the mournful black out of that friday and make it a plaid. Check out a listing of great local businesses here: http://www.localfirstindiana.org/business-directory/ This year there are going to be some pretty great titles released the day after Thanksgiving. Beatles, Black Keys, Iron & Wine, Sharon Jones, Wilco, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Soundgarden, Civil Wars, Kings of Leon, Tom Petty, Phish, Fear, Dr Dog, Pinback and much more! Atlas Sound - Parallax (4AD) .................................................. Welcome to Parallax, the 3rd long player from Atlas Sound, the expansive solo project from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter. It is not a "side-project," but rather a fully fleshed musical landscape chock-full of pop chronicles culled from sci-fi fever dreams and mid century rock. Perhaps Cox's best work to date, juxtaposing his modern, sometimes avant, songwriting sensibilities against a backdrop of ambient loneliness and a quiet feeling of desperation. The photos were done by Mick Rock, the legendary photographer best known for his work with David Bowie. DRC Music - Kinshasa One Two (Warp) .................................................. A collective of producers led by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) - headed to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo to make a record with contemporary Congolese musicians. DRC Music is comprised of producers: T-E-E-D, Dan The Automator, Jneiro Jarel, Richard Russell, Actress, Marc Antoine, Alwest, Remi Kabaka, Rodaidh McDonald and Kwes. Each of them has donated their time and waived all royalties to this work. The sounds created were completely different to normal instrumentation because the local instruments were primarily homemade from whatever was available. As Dan the Automator said, "The drive and spirit to create with whatever was available was the highlight to me- old fans, tins, tree trunks, homemade drums, metal rods." Good Luck - Without Hesitation LP (No Idea) .................................................. Bloomington's Good Luck is one of the most positive groups of people in one band possible. This exuberant wellspring is tapped on each and every song, even the heartfelt and downtrodden ones. In any other hands, the noodling would be too noodley. The sugar would be too delicious. Somehow the intricacy and curious time signatures melt away, taking a back seat to the overtly catchy and triumphant choruses. Charmingly humble and possessing a wickedly sharp wit, these songs are as fine as they come. This band deserves to be massive, though they'd probably be just as happy opening for Ted Leo. CD available in a few weeks. Joker - The Vision (4AD) .................................................. Aided by him releasing defining cuts like "Digidesign," "The Vision" and "Tron," Joker finds himself thick in the recent resurgence of British electronic music. "Slaughterhouse" highlights the young producer's maturing sound, continuing to playfully subvert pop conventions. The track also features a bombastic and memorable vocal performance from Silas from Turboweekend. On the flip is a futuristic 6 minute instrumental, more in line with what first hooked Joker fans; its muscular vintage- Sega aping synths and sharp drum snaps. Cass McCombs - Humor Risk (Domino) .................................................. Humor Risk was recorded in various homes and studios across America. It is perhaps Cass' most upbeat album yet, showing him in a more optimistic mood, and could be seen as the happier, more hopeful sister record to Wit's End. The lyrics are as interesting and wry as ever, the arrangements as beautiful as those on its predecessors, but here Cass' vocals are higher, the rhythm faster and the melodies more infectious than ever before. It portrays yet another facade of this versatile, incredibly talented and much underrated artist. Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica (Software) .................................................. Replica is an electronic song cycle based around audio procured from TV ad compilations. These sample-based meditations are as lyrical as they are ecological, featuring re-purposed "ghost vocals" which serve as narration for Lopatin's signature amorphous, ambient passages. Returnal's placid, synthetic surroundings are accelerated through darker, more unpredictable terrains via Lopatin's use of samplers, analog filtering, tape-op, piano, plate reverb and sub-bass. Secrets Between Sailors - Now Hear This LP (Hops) .................................................. Secrets Between Sailors met while band members were studying music, art and English at IU. They played their first show at a now defunct lesbian bar in Bloomington called Willie Joe's. Their first record was recorded by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording and mastered by Bob Weston. Secrets Between Sailors draw influence equally from hall of famers like Neil Young and garage punks such as the Replacements, Guided By Voices and Husker Du. 200 Years - s/t (Drag City) .................................................. New album from this duo comprised of Ben Chasny and Elisa Ambrogio. Sonically, it's basically Ben and Elisa with guitars, Elisa's voice, Ben's guitar alone, the breath of a harmonium, the faintest strains of piano. There's more playing in the mix than just that, but it's like that ol' dirty window - the sounds are more not there than they are there. Kurt Vile - So Outta Reach EP (Matador) .................................................. 6 songs: 5 incredible unheard songs recorded for Smoke Ring For My Halo & a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Downbound Train." All tracks also available as second disc in the deluxe CD edition of Smoke Ring For My Halo. "Distills thousands of hours of classic American guitar music into one very singular and sublime vision" - Pitchfork VA - Lost Notebooks Of Hank Williams (Third Man) .................................................. When Hank Williams died, age 29, in the back of his Cadillac sometime early morning on New Year's Day 1953, he left behind a scuffed, embroidered brown leather briefcase, which he used to carry bound notebooks, darkening their pages with lyrics and song ideas. Some were fully finished, some just started. After approaching Bob Dylan, the project evolved into a multi-artist tribute providing a variety of sympathetic approaches to this rich mysterious material. Other artists appearing on the album include Jack White, Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, Merle Haggard, Vince Gill and more.
