Not much to report, perhaps you've seen that we've been posting our employee year-end lists of our favorite albums, singles, reissues, etc on our facebook profile ( http://www.facebook.com/landlockedmusic ) this year instead of clogging up your newsletter enjoyment. If not, you should stroll over there and like us and leave some comments about how you agree or disagree! And while you're at it, you should probably follow us on twitter ( http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic ) too! We are more than just an email newsletter in those places, with contests, prizes, ticket offers, humor, anecdotes and more. Let's get social. New Arrivals for January 15th .................................................. A$AP Rocky - Long Live A$AP (RCA) .................................................. Prominent hip-hop rising star A$AP Rocky releases his highly anticipated debut album. The album will feature the buzz worthy "Goldie" and the Noah "40" Shebib produced hit, "F**kin' Problems" featuring hip-hop elites Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar. Executive produced by A$AP Rocky and A$AP Yams, the Long Live A$AP release will also feature guest appearances by Schoolboy Q, Santigold, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson and Big K.R.I.T. A$AP Rocky takes the reins as producer and co-producer on several tracks along with Danger Mouse, Jim Jonsin, Rico Love, Clams Casino, Skrillex, Hit-Boy and more. Bed Wetting Bad Boys - Ready for Boredom (RIP Society) .................................................. Ready For Boredom is the debut full length from Sydney's most aptly named power punk band - a charming mix of the best of the '70s punk explosion with the mid-'80s US independent underground. Their approach is grounded in the UK pre-punk pubs and wild bands like Dr. Feelgood and Slade, who pre-empted the punk resurgence of rock n roll in the pop charts with bold riffing and a no frills approach, much in the same manner The Replacements would do a decade later in the American Midwest. 'Waste of Time', which opens with a squeal of distortion and a self-deprecating howl, is the best track on the record capturing everything the band is good at: loud, blown-out melody; loud, blown out non-melody; and playing drunk. JJ Cale - In Session at Paradise Studio (Fontana) .................................................. Deluxe CD/DVD release from the Blues/Americana legend features a 1979 session recorded at The Paradise Studios, Los Angeles. Features Cale performing tracks like 'Cocaine', 'After Midnight' and 'Crazy Mama' with guest Leon Russell. The DVD contains five additional performances. Circuit des Yeux - CDY3 10" (Magnetic South) .................................................. Swirling dark clouds of slow sonic mischief spread outwards from Indiana and engulf America under a shadow, bringing about a new reality wherein Nico's singing is deemed too upbeat and perky and a decree comes down that said singing must be corrected by Haley Fohr. On this EP Fohr (accompanied by Greg Simpson on guitar, and Clarke Joyner on drums) combine torch singing, freak folk, the one Sonic Youth record that's too much for you (titles vary by listener and reasons for said decision), Magik Markers, Come, Daniel Johnston on uppers (guitar playing, not singing) and apparantly Bruce Springsteen on downers (her sequel to "I'm On Fire" shows who is really boss). A 20-minute journey into a surprisingly inspirational black hole. - Roctober The Everymen - New Jersey Hardcore (Killing Horse) .................................................. The Everymen may officially hail from Tuckerton, but the hard-working band has become a familiar presence at Hoboken and Jersey City venues (as well as the Jersey shore.) After several well-received EP’s, New Jersey Hardcore represents the Everymen’s first full-length, but don’t let the title fool you: This isn’t hardcore punk, but an adrenaline-fueled fusion of fuzzed-out garage-rock guitaris, street corner doo wop, Sixties pop, honking sax, and whiskey-soaked vocals. Frontman Michael V. always sounds like he spent the night before partying just a bit too hard, a nice contrast to the barroom croon of Catherine Herrick. As greasy as a sausage-and-peppers sub and as sweaty as a New Brunswick basement show, New Jersey Hardcore sums up everything that’s vital, fun, and enduring about Garden State rock n roll. Games - s/t LP (HoZac) .................................................. A pristine, timeless pop album with all the subtleties and effervescence of those misty classics of the Pre-Punk Powerpop era, constructed and rebuilt into an airtight, flawless specimen of the original form. Not that you'd expect any less from the purveyor behind Sing Sing Records, but Jeremy Thompson has been honing this sound for years now, previously in the frantically jagged Busy Signals and the early incarnation of the Carbonas, along with longtime cohort Dave Rahn, whose production of the debut Games LP is nothing short of breathtaking. Taking the same cues as The Raspberries, Big Star, Rockin' Horse, Shoes, and Milk 'N Cookies did well before the codification of New Wave, Games is a crystal-clear shot in the arm to the current state of rock'n roll, a genuine reflection, an instant hit, and something for New Yorkers to be proud of. The Lone Bellow - s/t (Descendant) .................................................. Hailing from Brooklyn via south of the Mason-Dixon, The Lone Bellow will release their self-titled album on brand new label Descendant Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. The Lone Bellow (formerly known as Zach Williams & The Bellow) have made a name for themselves with their acclaimed live shows in New York and across the country during their stint opening for Grammy Winners The Civil Wars. Featuring lead singer and principal songwriter Zach Williams, singer and mandolin player Kanene Pipkin and singer-guitarist Brian Elmquist, The Lone Bellow isn't just a group of musicians; they are an "urban tribe," a family away from family. Thee Open Sex - s/t LP (Magnetic South) .................................................. After years in the midwestern freak scene pushing ear splitting cassettes, the rest of the Earth can now discover Bloomington's Thee Open Sex. With their first proper full length, they approach the American alienation of Rocket From the Tombs as reductionists, aligning with German art rock robotics from the viewpoint of John Lydon. While there's a thousand bands mining the 70s German minimalist psych aesthetic, Thee Open Sex gets down on the Berlin street of Eno or Bowie as much as it explores Can's Inner Space. Songs come unhinged in the the cosmic pathways connecting the trance of Popol Vuh, with Eddie Hazel's electromagnetism and the hypnotic thump of "Lust for Life." The captivating aggression in vocalist Miss Mess suggests a spiritual depth while staying grounded on the planet where the Pagans and Dow Jones & the Industrials set up their amps. Christoper Owens [Girls] - Lysandre (Fat Possum) .................................................. Debut solo album from the former frontman for indie darlings, Girls. The record takes on the narrative of "a coming of age story, a road trip, a love story following Owens from San Francisco to New York to France, where he falls in love with a girl named Lysandre. The record features Owens on guitars/vocals as well as Evan Weiss (guitar), Matthew Kallman (keys), Vince Meghrouni (sax/flute), David Sutton (bass), Seth Kasper (drums), Hannah Hunt & Cally Robertson (vocals). Free sheet music with purchase! Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold (Whats Your Rupture) .................................................. Parquet Courts are a New York band. Throw out the countless shallow Brooklyn bands of the blase 2000's: Light Up Gold is a conscious effort to draw from the rich culture of the city - the bands like Sonic Youth, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground that are not from New York, but of it. A panoramic landscape of dilapidated corner-stores and crowded apartments is superimposed over bare-bones Americana, leaving little room for romance or sentiment. It's punk, it's American, it's New York... it's the color of something you were looking for. Yo La Tengo - Fade (Matador) .................................................. Fade is the most direct, personal and cohesive album of Yo La Tengo's career to date. Recorded with John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, it recalls the sonic innovation and lush cohesion of career high points like 1997's I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One and 2000's And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. The album is a tapestry of fine melody and elegant noise, rhythmic shadowplay and shy-eyed orchestral beauty, songfulness and experimentation. Indie record store LP version includes bonus 7" of Todd Rundgren & Times New Viking covers! VA - Nine Different Kinds of Gone: A Tribute to Kenny Childers (MFT) .................................................. One of Indiana's best songwriters and most versatile musicians receives a special tribute from a lot of talented friends and admirers. Kenny Childers has been in some of the Indiana's most creative and catchy bands over the years, including Gentleman Caller, Mysteries of Life, Stranded At The Drive-In, Brando, and more. Kenny's longtime friend and collaborator, Chris Kupersmith, curated this awesome tribute album featuring over 20 amazing artists covering Kenny's songs. Includes Sophia Travis, Jake Smith, Merrie Sloan, John Dehner, Courtney Kaiser, Pat Spurgeon, Kate Long, David England, Jeb Banner, Mike Bridavsky, Pete Schreiner, Paul Mahern and many Many MANY more! Limited to 300 copies. VA - West Of Memphis: Voices For Justice OST (Sony) .................................................. West of Memphis: Voices for Justice is music from and inspired by West of Memphis, the documentary film. In every instance, the artists involved have made the decision about which song they felt reflected their personal feelings about the case. There's a connection between the music and the man remaining at its center, Damien Echols. Longtime personal supporters, Henry Rollins and Johnny Depp each lend their voices to read excerpts from Damien Echols' letters from death row recited over the breathtaking Nick Cave / Warren Ellis score featured in the film. Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, chose to include a hauntingly beautiful cover of Pink Floyd's "Mother." "Satellite" by Eddie Vedder was written for Lorri Davis, Damien Echols' wife, as part of a collection of songs Eddie recorded for the couple in 2000. Artists such as Lucinda Williams, Band of Horses, Patti Smith, Citizen Cope, Tonto's Giant Nuts featuring Johnny Depp and others each have particular stories behind the songs that represent them on this collection. Your purchase of this album will in part directly benefit the West Memphis 3. The Vinyl Zone ..................................................
