And while we're at it, we should inform you that IU Cinema is also presenting the Woodstock concert film on Monday, February 4th. All three are recommended, and they have some more awesome music films coming later this semester! New Arrivals for January 29th .................................................. Bad Religion - True North (Epitaph) .................................................. In a world still brimming with rampant anti intellectualism, inequality and oppression, Bad Religion's signature brand of sonically charged humanist dissent seems as relevant as ever. On True North, the storied band deliberately revisits and refines the powerful and melodic Southern California sound they helped to define. 16 songs. 35 minutes. Blaudzun - Heavy Flowers (Varese) .................................................. Heavy Flowers was released in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Scandinavia earlier this year and hit #4 on the Dutch Top 100 Albums Charts in the first week. Critics and music fans have labeled his third record as a stunning and incredible successor. The single, "Flame on My Head," became and instant classic on Studio Brussel and hit both their Hotlist and the prestigious Afrekening charts. In March, Blaudzun was nominated as Best Alternative Artist for a 3FM Award. His music has been likened to indie pop and folk rock and is aestheticaaly compared to Arcade Fire as well as to Ryan Adams and Mumford & Sons. Ducktails - The Flower Lane (Domino) .................................................. Ducktails, is the increasingly less solo endeavor of Matt Mondanile [guitarist from Real Estate]. The Flower Lane, is the project's fourth album. Recorded and mixed over the summer of 2012 with Al Carlson [Peaking Lights, Oneohtrix Point Never] and includes contributions from members of Big Troubles, Oneohtrix Point Never, Ford + Lopatin, Real Estate & Cults. Includes a stunning cover of Clean/Chills member Peter Gutteridge's "Planet Phrom." Fiction Family - Fiction Family Reunion (Rock Ridge) .................................................. This 2nd partnership of Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek), Fiction Family Reunion, sees two distinctive artists offering up their blend of folk, pop, and songcraft. Foreman and Watkins became friends at their hometown festival, San Diego's famed Street Scene. Convening at Switchfoot's Spot X Studio for a series of sessions, the band produced themselves, keeping it intimate and organic. The first single "Up Against the Wall" notes the influence of The Band's "The Weight," as Fiction Family's attempt to find that same DNA. Adam Green & Binki Shapiro - s/t (Rounder) .................................................. With deceptively pretty arrangements that echo filigreed late-60s folk-pop and an easygoing rapport between singers, this duets collaboration between Adam Green and Binki Shapiro takes just one listen to enchant. Both artists are notable figures among indie-pop fans, cherished for their off-kilter sensibility (him) and elegantly quirky style (her). Green came onto the NYC anti-folk scene with his band The Moldy Peaches, enjoying belated mainstream success via their song on the Grammy-winning soundtrack to the hit film, Juno. Shapiro is recognized by her presence in Little Joy, a breezy Brazilian-accented LA trio formed with Fabrizio Moretti of the Strokes and Rodrigo Amarante of Los Hermanos. Adam and Binki's debut album features sweetly melancholic lyrics, candidly addressing betrayal and incipient heartbreak, yet encased in the most gentle and melodic of vocals. Petra Haden - Petra Goes to the Movies (Anti) .................................................. Stunning a capella renditions of classic movie themes from Psycho to Taxi Driver to The Social Network to Superman. With guests Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden (her dad) and Bill Frisell. Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite - Get Up! (Stax) .................................................. Ben Harper has teamed with renowned harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite to create Get Up!, a piercing song-cycle of struggle and heart. A striking mix of blues, gospel, roots and R&B, Get Up! features ten vivid musical character studies, skillfully rendered in cinematic detail, all written or co-written by Harper. Charlie Musselwhite s searing point/counter-point harmonica accentuates Harper s vocals throughout Get Up!, tying its songs together into a cohesive musical whole. The band, including Jason Mozersky, guitar; Jesse Ingalls, bass; Jordan Richardson, drums; along with Ben Harper on vocals, guitar and slide guitar; plays with economical grit, lending the songs true understanding and authority. Hey Ocean - Is (Nettwerk) .................................................. Known to many as the quintessential Canadian West Coast band, Hey Ocean! - Ashleigh Ball [vocals/flute], David Beckingham [vocals/guitar], Dave Vertesi [vocals/bass] - have earned themselves the loyalty of an ever-expanding fan base thanks in large part to their captivating and energetic live shows. CBC Music called "Big Blue Wave," with its infectious hook and captivating melodies, the band's crossover hit. Elsewhere on the record, "Make Up a New Dance" shimmies and shakes with a snappy guitar and propulsive beat, while the band beautifully captures longing on the poetic and poignant "Islands." Its wistful acoustic guitars sail into a dreamscape that's both comforting and captivating, especially as Beckingham and Ball sing in pristine harmony. There's a cinematic aspect to Hey Ocean! that's undeniable. Local Natives - Hummingbird (Frenchkiss) .................................................. Shining opener "You & I" is the album's calling card, bathing synthetic drums in warm organs and surfy guitars, and the band's signature sky-high harmonies. "Heavy Feet" marries hand claps and sparse chords with a driving snare and one of the most remarkable choruses on the album. "Colombia," written for a member's mother who passed away unexpectedly last year, is the album's swollen heart moment, a love letter from a son to a parent which grows in beautiful, orchestral complexity around a simple, plaintive chorus. Like all of Hummingbird, the song carries with it not just a melodic richness, but a quality of catharsis and grace - a moment to be examined and ultimately enjoyed. Deluxe LP also available. Lost Animal - Ex Tropical (Hardly Art) .................................................. Ex Tropical is Australia's Jarrod Quarell, aka Lost Animal's debut LP. Ex Tropical exudes everything that makes for a great album; heart, soul, sensuality and reflection all set to the swagger and sway of a dry and thumping bass line and bouncing rattling drum machine. Front and center is Jarrod's voice & lyrics; cryptic, cool, sincere, and spoken in a tone that is calming and unflappable. It is this voice, combined with that bass and with those drums spoke of, lovingly peppered by keys, marimba, brass, & xylophone, that make Ex Tropical sound fresh and new. Ruby Suns - Christopher (Sub Pop) .................................................. Christopher is the Ruby Suns' fourth album, and their third for Sub Pop. On Christopher, band-leader Ryan McPhun runs with his enthusiasm for the ecstatic dance-floor energy of Scandinavian gloss-pop; McPhun has stopped thinking so much and joined the party. McPhun and A-list engineer Chris Coady (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Gang Gang Dance) spent two weeks in NYC polishing Christopher to an opalescent sheen, yielding the kind of expensive-sounding, future-leaning ear candy typically in the province of Top 40 radio. Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob (WB) .................................................. Heartthrob, the highly anticipated follow-up to Sainthood, gives us Tegan and Sara in their superhero tights and capes, ready to conquer the pop universe, and the new outfits suit them just as well as their old-school jeans and T-shirts. Tomahawk - Oddfellows (Ipecac) .................................................. Tomahawk is Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas) & John Stanier (Helmet, Battles) and this time around joined by Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas). They camped out at Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye studios in Nashville with Collin Dupuis and left with Oddfellows to show for it. Rock and roll will be saved and destroyed. They plan to play live shows for the first time since 2003 and are willing to go anywhere as long as they can get a warm bed with cold pillows, a square meal and a boatload of cash. The Vinyl Zone .................................................. Fidlar - s/t LP (Mom + Pop) Also Released This Week ..................................................
