Apache Dropout - Magnetic Heads LP (Family Vineyard) .................................................. This is not a "new" Apache Dropout platter, but an archival sidestep into the Fugs n' fried view of their early beginnings. Before the Bloomington trio cemented their unique red-level, distorto proto-punk they focused on a more obliterated bent on traditional forms. Fiddle, distortion and echo drive most of these songs, as sung by Sonny Blood, that tout distrust of banks, ballot uncertainties and magnetic heads. It's a bleaker vision than the recent Bubblegum Graveyard LP on Trouble in Mind, even with the blownout take on Chuck Berry's "Memphis, TN" and hints of Holy Modal Rounders to Kim Fowley doused throughout these sides. Darkstar - News from Nowhere (Warp) .................................................. London trio, Darkstar released their debut album on Hyperdub records, the dubstep label that was able to separate itself from the hype thanks to the likes of Burial, Laurel Halo and Zomby. For their sophomore effort, the band moved to legendary electronic label Warp, home to the likes of Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus and Battles. This move is pretty representative of the progression in their style, they've gone from a band with one eye on songcraft and one eye on the dancefloor to a band wholly dedicated to taking electronic music in a far more thought-provoking direction. Robert Delong - Just Movement (Glassnote) .................................................. Delong, raised in the suburbs of Seattle, headed south to Los Angeles with a toolbox of Wii-motes, keyboards, and drums to develop a live rock show that CMJ Magazine claims worthy of "an 8-bit warrior, seamlessly creating danceable electro beats with his Wii Remote and Sega Genesis controller on par with the Chemical Brothers." Having performed his genre-bending songs since 2010, Delong uses MIDI interfaces, a full drum set, drum pads, keyboards, laptops and game controllers, looping his music live to fuse electronic dance beats with striking melodies and lyrics with emotional heart. Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse (Atlantic) .................................................. Frightened Rabbit is among the most acclaimed bands of the 2000s, earning wide-ranging critical applause and a fervent international fan following with their emotionally exhilarating melodies and scathingly frank lyricism. The band's 2010's full-length, The Winter Of Mixed Drinks, was met with unanimous acclaim both here and at home. The Guardian's Dave Simpson declared that "the songwriting is sharp throughout and most of their songs - with themes of escape, freedom and reinvention - have huge impassioned choruses that are made to be shouted from the nearest available mountain... This is the sound of a band upping their game." Hayden - Us Alone (Arts & Crafts) .................................................. Having spent nearly two decades creating uniquely affecting music defined by folk and rock flourishes, personal sentiment and a voice that channels Neil Young's falsetto highs and the wavering, raspy lows of Leonard Cohen, Hayden now signs to Arts & Crafts for the release of his seventh full length. Us Alone is a subtle, emotional and sonically warm journey written and performed by one of Canada's most consistent artists. A welcome addition to a brilliant career. Jim James - Regions of Light Sound of God (ATO) .................................................. New solo release from the My Morning Jacket mainman. Regions Of Light And Sound of God was written, produced and all instruments performed by Jim James (with the exception of strings and percussion) in Louisville, KY. The music on the album is inspired by life and the novel in woodcuts 'Gods' Man' by Lynd Ward. James' full time job, My Morning Jacket, has sold over a million albums in the US alone. Their last album debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200. Fela Kuti - Best of Black President 2 (Knitting Factory) .................................................. New collection from the late Nigerian musician and political rights activist who was one of the foremost pioneers of the Afrobeat movement. This second volume includes more of his finest recordings spanning his entire career. Deluxe three disc (two CDs + DVD) edition includes bonus DVD. Ron Sexsmith - Forever Endeavour (MRI) .................................................. The album was recorded in 2011 at Mitchell Froom's Santa Monica studio. Assisting on the sessions were engineer David Boucher and a clutch of seasoned West Coast players that included drummer Pete Thomas, bassist Bob Glaub and pedal steel prince Greg Leisz. Strings were overdubbed afterwards using L.A.'s feted Calder Quartet. Thao and the Get Down Stay Down - We the Common (Ribbon) .................................................. We The Common is the third album from the San Francisco band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. The previous Thao albums were on Kill Rock Stars. Thao also recently had an album with Mirah. The new album was recorded at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco with John Congleton [St. Vincent, Bill Callahan, Explosions In The Sky] and features a duet w/ Joanna Newsom. Richard Thompson - Electric (New West) .................................................. Guitar and folk music legend Richard Thompson has a brand new studio album, Electric, produced by Buddy Miller. Thompson, named one of Rolling Stone Magazine's 20 Greatest Guitarists, brings a record full of gifted songwriting and virtuosic guitar playing. Electric was made at Buddy Miller's home studio in Nashville, TN. The record features Alison Krauss on the song "The Snow Leopard." Deluxe 2CD version also available! Triptides - Sun Pavilion (Stroll On) .................................................. Triptides are a Bloomington garage rock trio whose sun-baked, Link Wray-infused guitar riffs and sleepy vocals sound as if they originated inside a conch shell on the Santa Cruz boardwalk. It takes focus and attention to detail to commit so completely to a genre like surf rock. To this point, Brigman and Menashe appear to relish in the subtle nuances of their craft: that essential touch of reverb on the lead guitar, the atmosphere of immaculately layered harmonies, the occasional foray into psychedelic distortion. All of it a nod to the post-British Invasion sound that dominated American airwaves in the late 60s. - MFT Unknown Mortal Orchestra - II (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. II builds on the break-beat, junk-shop charm the 32-year-old multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ruban Nielson came to be renowned for following Unknown Mortal Orchestra's self-titled 2011 debut, and signals the solidification of the band's position as an endlessly intriguing, brave psychedelic band. UMO is unafraid to dig deeper than the rest to lock into their intoxicating, opiate groove and bring rock 'n' roll's exaggerated myths to life. Catch em Live at The Bluebird w/ Foxygen on March 8th! Townes Van Zandt - Sunshine Boy (Omnivore) .................................................. The art of Townes Van Zandt reveals itself a little at a time. Every hearing brings forth something you can't believe you missed all the other times, or something that rings even truer today than back when. The alternate versions add an entirely new dimension, like seeing someone you thought you knew so well in a new light. The new songs are simply good to have when it seemed as if the barrel was empty. And so here are more than 2 hours of Townes music unheard since the engineer peeled off a little splicing tape to seal the box around 40 years ago. 28 previously unissued tracks! All songs drawn from Townes most prolific and great period 1971-72. Paul Williams - Still Alive DVD (Virgil) .................................................. He won Grammys and an Academy Award; wrote many #1 songs; starred in a Brian DePalma movie; put out his own hit records and albums; was a guest on The Tonight Show 50 times; and is the president of ASCAP... and you might not have heard of him. In the 70's, Paul Williams was the singer / actor / songwriter that emotional, alienated teenage boys all over the world wanted to be, a sex symbol before MTV, when sex symbols could be 5"2 and sing songs about loneliness with the Muppets.
