Devon Allman - Turquoise (Ruf) .................................................. Guitarist Devon Allman makes music that is inspired by the blues... and that s about all he has in common with his famous father, Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. Musically best described as Muddy Waters meets Sun Ra, the younger Allman finds inspiration in a wealth of influences, from Memphis soul and the guitar-driven blues-rock of the 1970s to jazz and R&B. Matt Costa - s/t (Brushfire) .................................................. Matt Costa currently resides in Costa Mesa, CA. Matt learned to play guitar and write songs whilst recovering from a skateboarding accident. Prior to the accident Matt had hopes of becoming a professional skateboarder but it was not meant to be, his love of music and songwriting took precedence and he began to record. With the help of Tom Dumont (No Doubt), Matt recorded two self-released EP's. In 2005 Matt joined the Brushfire family and has since released three LP's Songs We Sing & Unfamiliar Faces (both produced by Tom Dumont) and Mobile Chateau which saw Matt take over the recording, engineering and producing duties for the first time. Matt's mix of pop, folk, blues and psychedelia appeals to a wide range of listeners and has allowed him to tour with everyone from Jack Johnson to Modest Mouse and Oasis. Deer Tracks - Archer Trilogy Pt 3 (Control Group) .................................................. The Deer Tracks are a Northern Light Electronica duo, David Lehnberg & Elin Lindfors, who call Gavle, Sweden their home. These two versatile multi-instrumentalists and singers, handle every aspect of their music from writing to recording to production. On The Archer Trilogy Pt. 3; the band exhibits their signature sounds, Elin sings breathlessly over an anxious synthesizer melody and suddenly a hard-edged guitar riff snaps the song in two, only to fall away as strings and bass sweeps in for a soaring chorus. Foals - Holy Fire (WB) .................................................. Detroit. Willesden. Olympos, on the Greek island of Karpathos. "The inside of our skulls." These are the places that make up Holy Fire, Foals third album, their most direct and fully realized album yet. Foals have stepped up from, as Yannis puts it, "songs for indie clubs" to something much, much bigger. Their third album might not sound like Depeche Mode or Nine Inch Nails, but it has much of the same ambitious spirit and grandiose aesthetic that led to those groups touching the lives of millions. This is the sound of Foals arriving. Jacco Gardner - Cabinet of Curiosities (Trouble in Mind) .................................................. The 12 tracks that make up Cabinet Of Curiosities deftly explore the loss of innocence in a far more accomplished and mature way than you would expect from a 24 yr old, fulfilling the promises made by his first two singles. His melodic palette colors music with a more UK-sensibility, where minor chords and plush harmonies brush up against strings, mellotrons, harpsichords and an occasional squeezebox. The overall feel is more Zombies than Left Banke and more Nirvana and Billy Nicholls than Beach Boys and Van Dyke Parks. Wanda Jackson - The Best Of the Classic Capitol Singles (Omnivore) .................................................. Idolized by three generations of rockers, from Las Vegas to Stockholm, Wanda Jackson has never worn her crown as to the attitude born. Debuting on Country radio when she was still too young to drive, she would enter middle-age singing joyfully for the Lord. But in between, she would meet Elvis Presley and record her legendary Capitol singles, some of them fueled by rock 'n' roll nitroglycerin. Yet, to hear this selection now is to also marvel at how wildly Wanda veered from style to style, as if the gorgeous, spaghetti-strapped Oklahoma rockabilly cared no more for the confines of genre than she did for a respectable neckline. She tore through songs that Elvis sang, The Cadillacs sang, Betty Hutton sang. She drew from jazz greats, R&B legends, and writers revered in the Nashville song factories. Ooga Boogas - s/t (Aarght) .................................................. Long-awaited follow-up to 2008's 'Romance and Adventure' for the Melbourne quartet. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Mikey Young. Artwork by Bystrom's aunt, Barbro Lindblom. Includes the funky eight-minute fever dream "Sex in the Chillzone". The album is a strange blend of lyrical observations on the banality of 21st-century life combined with a musical score which encompasses everything from garage punk to boogie to synth-heavy New Wave. Pissed Jeans - Honeys (Sub Pop) .................................................. Age and four full-lengths haven't mellowed Pissed Jeans; they can still unleash a blare that will exfoliate your cochlea. Formed in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Pissed Jeans released Shallow, their first album, in 2005. After relocating to Philadelphia and signing to Sub Pop, they released Hope for Men in 2007, and then King of Jeans in 2009. Honeys recorded by Grammy nominee Alex Newport - is an ode to the misery and shackles of being a responsible adult, and the shame of one's own narcissism. Pissed Jeans trucks in menacing songs about insecurity, and nobody has ever done it better. FREE bonus 7" w/ purchase! Psychic Friend - My Rocks Are Dreams (Dangerbird) .................................................. L to the A, C to the A: Will Schwartz, Psychic Friend s leading man, wrote the tunes that would become their debut album, My Rocks Are Dreams expressly for the project. That seems a kind of mild statement, but considering Schwartz's musical work ethic, it's a valid point. Not only has he been a founding member of indie tour-de-force, Imperial Teen for the past 15 years, he also owns and operates another notable incarnation, Hey Willpower. Thenewno2 - Beautiful Creatures OST (Fontana) .................................................. The Soundtrack features original score by thenewno2, led by Grammy Award winner Dhani Harrison, 3 time Grammy winner Paul Hicks and composer Jonathan Sadoff. It also includes 2 unreleased songs in the film from thenewno2, including Run To Me with Ben Harper and Liela Moss (Duke Spirit) and Never Too Late also featuring Liela Moss. Beautiful Creatures: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the companion to the film directed by Oscar nominee Richard LaGravenese. The film is based on the first novel in the best-selling Castor Chronicles series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The music was recorded in the famed Abbey Road s Studio 2 with a 54 piece London based orchestra. It is a melody driven soundscape that infuses electronica and modern rock with a Southern Gothic sultriness. The Virginmarys - King of Conflict (Wind-Up) .................................................. British breakthrough band The Virginmarys are a powerhouse trio who've spent the past two years tearing through Europe with a sound the BBC hailed as "raw, intoxicating rock and roll in the finest traditions of the genre." Kerrang! hailed the group with a four-star review, praising them for "channeling the pure rock grooves of Zeppelin; tight, explosive and wired." They arrive on this side of the pond with their fiery full-length debut, King Of Conflict, produced by Toby Jepson and mixed by Chris Sheldon (Pixies, Foo Fighters). The big, bouncy and bombastic album captures The Virginmarys at their thrilling best. The Vinyl Zone ..................................................
