New Arrivals for February 19th .................................................. Atlas Genius - When it Was Now (WB) .................................................. When It Was Now is the debut album from Atlas Genius that features the hit single "Trojans." The Australian band has toured the US with groups like Silversun Pickups, Wolf Gang and Animal Kingdom and wrapped up their 2012 run with a sold-out headlining show at Los Angeles' Troubadour. While the world awaits the next Phoenix album, here's an Aussie outfit doing Francophile studio pop. Beach Fossils - Clash the Truth (Captured Tracks) .................................................. Instead of merely going from a "bedroom DiY" project to a "better fidelity studio project" the deliberate decision to work with Ben Greenberg (The Men) was determined to capture, if not in style, the spirit and enthusiasm of punk and aggressive music in general. Consider the titles "Generational Synthetic", "Caustic Cross" and "Burn You Down" its easy to see how the record, while not a punk or post-punk record by strict definition, certainly nods to the first major influence of Dustin's creative spark. Drawing from the previous works melodic strengths and guitar textures emboldened by a sound closer to their energetic and cathartic live set, its the clear next step in the trajectory of the band and the dis-association from the home-recording boom from which it originated. Dawn McCarthy & Bonny Billy - What the Brothers Sang (Drag City) .................................................. Another chapter of The Great American Songbook written back in the 1950s - the publisher's catalogs that fed The Everly Brothers and their brethren and led, at the greatest moment, to a synchronicity of being that was the People's Standards. Bonny and Dawn re-present the songs that the Brothers sang, sung again in a new century for the next of kind. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away (Bad Seed) .................................................. At the heart of Push the Sky Away is a naturalism and warmth that makes it the most subtly beautiful of all the Bad Seeds albums. The contemporary settings of myths, and the cultural references that have time-stamped Nick's songs of the 21st century mist lightly through details drawn from the life he observed around his seaside home, through the tall windows on the album's mysterious and ambiguous cover. These songs convey how on the internet profoundly significant events, momentary fads and mystically-tinged absurdities sit side-by-side and question how we might recognise and assign weight to what's genuinely important. The album has a clarity and sweet strangeness that's built upon the refusal to accept limitations, whether they be the traditional uses and sounds of musical instruments, lyric styles, or diminished spiritual horizons. Endless Boogie - Long Island (No Quarter) .................................................. Message found on No Quarter's answering machine: "Hey Mike- Thanks for sendin over the latest from Endless Boogie. So "Long Island" makes, what, their 7th trip around the vinyl horn? You gotta give it to'em, they're style of blast don't ever get old. I once seen Boog Powell in this post game, after he'd hit two dingers off the A's, & the interviewer asked "do ya ever get tired of blastin'em over the fence?" Boog ruminated this for a second, gave way to scratchin his head, then locked eyes with the natterin pipsqueak, smiled & said "NOPE!" And look at him now? The king of Baltimore BBQ." Bonus rekkid with purchase while they last. Flume - s/t (Mom & Pop) .................................................. Flume, a 21-year-old beat-maker from Sydney, is set to be one of the breakout stars this year. Flume got his first taste for producing at age 13 from the most unlikely of places - a music production program he found in a cereal box. Taking a no-holds-barred attitude to music creation, Flume takes inspiration from a wide variety of sources and scenes distilling his sound into a melodic bass heavy style that is uniquely his own. Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside - Untamed Beast (Partisan) .................................................. Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside vigorously mines a sweet spot between modern and vintage. Sallie's voice has elicited comparisons to classic jazz and blues icons, yet it is stoked with the fire of youth and rebellion, too, an instrument capable of conveying raw emotion and nuanced artistry in the same breath. Iceage - You're Nothing (Matador) .................................................. Just out of their teens, it seems Copenhagen's Iceage have only added to the anxiety and tension that made their debut album, New Brigade, so compelling. But now, they're challenging their raging emotions instead of simply expressing them. Iceage's sophomore album is the sound of a band pushing their singular mix of punk, goth, hardcore, and post-punk to even further extremes. It's overwhelming how many ways they have found to write the short aggressive rock song. When you see them live you get the feeling the songs are just about to fall apart before miraculously recovering, always rewarding you with a climax. This menacing energy is more forceful on You're Nothing - a more epic sound, like a rough sea. Jamie Lidell - s/t (Warp) .................................................. "Merging electronic beats and sounds with those of classic soul, Lidell has created a new future-retro R&B that simultaneously evokes and revitalizes the sound of a bygone era." - The Believer. Jamie Lidell's new self-titled recording is the fifth full-length release from the critically acclaimed artist, whose previous records have been praised by the New York Times as "exceedingly precise and lovely," including 2008's Jim, which was named Best Pop/Rock Album by the Independent Music Awards. Bobby Long - Wishbone (ATO) .................................................. Sophomore album from the New York-based British singer/songwriter. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Old Crow Medicine Show), the well crafted songs on Wishbone live up to the expectations put upon a young man the Wall Street Journal touted as a "promising talent" with "much more to say," after the release of his Liam Watson produced debut album A Winter Tale. Lotus - Build (Sci Fidelity) .................................................. Lotus has crafted a unique musical style outside of simple genre limitations. On a given weekend the band could be the only group with guitars at an all electronic music festival and then the next night crash a traditional rock festival with their dance heavy beats, synths and samples. Equal parts instrumental post-rock and electronic dance, the band's distinguishing feature is the ability to maintain a decidedly unique musical voice and remain current while bucking passing trends. Jeffrey Novak - Baron in the Trees (In the Red) .................................................. Second solo album from Cheap Time front man Jeffrey Novak. Novak is the rock underworld's most adept chameleon. Composed and recorded on piano with sparse bass, guitar, drums and strings at Jay Reatard's Shattered Studios, Baron In The Trees also marks one of the last projects that Reatard participated in, having recorded, produced and played on the album. Much like Reatard's own trajectory, Novak is not afraid to explore and expand his musical territories; Baron In The Trees leaves you excited to hear what might come next.
