Jack White has now been announced as official RSD13 Ambassador! What does that mean? It means that he will be guiding the public at large in an effort to educate the importance and awesomeness of small independent record stores across the world. Watch his first piece of propaganda on the subject. It's official. Record Store Day 2013 is locked and loaded! Saturday April 20th. Mark your calendars, plan your vacation, book a babysitter or call in sick to work. It's gonna be a good time! What to expect from us? Oh you know, live music, DJs, awesome records, some refreshments, high fives, and ... surprises! Instore performance alert! Sunday April 14th at 4PM we will be featuring an intimate acoustic performance from Daniel Bachman (new album on Tompkins Square). Daniel was born and raised in Fredericksburg, VA. He has been playing what he describes as “psychedelic appalachia” since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs & LPs (many under the moniker Sacred Harp), with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. He has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose. His newest effort is the full length 'Seven Pines', sprung from a year living and working in the city of Philadelphia. The sound results in a combination of homesick worried blues and the ecstatic buzz of fresh experience and a new life in unknown territory. Join us, 4PM, Sunday April 14th, FREE! We have a new deal started for all you bargain shoppers- 10 dollar bin LPs are now just $5. But ya gotta buy 10 of em, 9 will still cost you $9. And yes, if you wanna get 20, that'll only cost you $10. Stock up! New Arrivals for February 26th .................................................. Alcoa - Bone and Marrow (Bridge Nine) .................................................. Derek Archambault has spent the last 4 years on tour with progressive hardcore band Defeater, and has had a solo project called Alcoa going for even longer. Alcoa's debut full-length, Bone & Marrow, is country-tinged with pop sensibilities; full of songs about life, love and regret. Also prevalent on the album is the addition of instrumentation like upright bass, banjo, fiddle, pedal steel, piano/organ, and charming guy/girl dueling vocal. Atoms for Peace - AMOK (XL) .................................................. Atoms for Peace is Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker, and Flea. They came together by playing in support of Thom's Grammy nominated album The Eraser. They got a big buzz from those shows and discovered loads of energy from transforming the music from electronic to live, so they carried on for a few days in the studio and decided to make it a loose, on-going thing, since everyone in the band has a day job as well. Boy - Mutual Friends (Nettwerk) .................................................. Boy is comprised of Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass (neither of which are boys). Steiner sang in several bands in her native Switzerland before moving to Germany, where Glass grew up, playing the cello in classical orchestras as a child, and later working as a bass player for several pop bands. The duo met when they both participated in a prestigious music workshop in Hamburg. Together, Boy creates their own distinct, playful yet emotional sound that only these two charismatic performers could deliver. Grave Babies - Crusher (Hardly Art) .................................................. After a wad of releases & tours, Seattle goth pop rockers Grave Babies have finally released their greatest LP to date. Fans of the band past lives will find the band has cleaned up ever so, but still keeps the suspense in it's jarring, harsh, distorted melodies. Crusher is grave and meticulous as any ceremony that has been taught by cold and wet UK creatures or banshees since the late 70s through the mid 90s but come to you in new incantations of a West Coast pop record that has warped in day and now sings a new tune of life after death. Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell - Old Yellow Moon (Nonesuch) .................................................. Old Yellow Moon features four songs written by Crowell as well as interpretations of songs such as Hank DeVito's 'Hanging Up My Heart,' Roger Miller's 'Invitation to the Blues,' and Allen Reynolds' 'Dreaming My Dreams,' among others. Produced by Brian Ahern (Johnny Cash, George Jones, Roy Orbison), this is the first official collaboration from the duo since Crowell joined Harris' Hot Band as guitarist and harmony singer in 1975. In addition to Harris and Crowell, the album features world-renowned musicians including Stuart Duncan, Vince Gill, Bill Payne, as well as members of the original Hot Band. Ill Bill - The Grimy Awards (Fat Beats) .................................................. New York rapper and producer, best known for his work with Non Phixion and La Coka Nostra. Tangential and biographic, the album sees Bill addressing the formative touchstones of his life, offering "what-ifs" and describing historical events, many gruesome, that shaped the suspicious, futurist, political, analytical persona he's been putting on wax for the better part of 3 decades. Here he effortlessly enlists a reverent squad of super-notable collaborators, who not only sign their approval but round out a grand Boom-Bap vision sonically and thematically. Featuring A-Track, H.R., Shabazz The Disciple, Lil Fame, El-P, Jedi Mind Tricks and others. Johnny Marr - The Messenger (Sire) .................................................. One of the most celebrated guitarists in the history of contemporary music, presents his debut solo album. The album features Marr front & center on vocals & guitar, & represents our first chance to capture Johnny Marr s musical vision exactly as he envisioned on the first true solo album of his career. The Messenger was written & produced by Marr himself. Best known for his work alongside Morrissey as the creative force behind The Smiths, Marr has continued his career as an official member or touring guitarist for a diverse array of acclaimed bands since. Mount Moriah - Miracle Temple (Merge) .................................................. Fiercely contemporary yet rich with classic influences, Miracle Temple sports bigger arrangements, louder guitars, bolder vocals, and more soulful rhythms than their debut. Through their artful personal storytelling, the band develops a piercing portrait of a "New South" where progressive traditions are still fitfully breaking free from conservative ones. Mount Moriah's cathartic vision for their home and themselves is writ large in their lovingly critical negotiation with romantic, political, and gender identities; geographical perspective; confrontation and forgiveness. Shout Out Louds - Optica (Merge) .................................................. Shout Out Louds took their time with these songs, recording for about a year and a half in a small Stockholm studio and producing themselves for the first time with help from Johannes Berglund. A theme emerged and Optica was born, an album celebrating color and light from a band confident in its sound. The Vinyl Zone .................................................. Nick Drake - Pink Moon LP (Island) Also Released This Week .................................................. Ace Reporter - Yearling (Ooh La La) Bilal - A Love Surreal (eOne) Doldrums - Lesser Evil (Arbutus) Bill Frissell - Silent Comedy (Tzadik) Gold Fields - Black Sun (Astralwerks) Wayne Hancock - Ride (Bloodshot) The Last Royals - Twistification (Ooh La La) Taddy Porter - Stay Golden (Caroline) Sally Shapiro - Somewhere Else (Paper Bag) Vietnam - An A.Merican D.Ream (Mexican Summer) Upcoming Bloomington shows that we're excited about: ..................................................
