Instore performance alert! Sunday April 14th at 4PM we will be featuring an intimate acoustic performance from Daniel Bachman (new album on Tompkins Square). Daniel was born and raised in Fredericksburg, VA. He has been playing what he describes as "psychedelic appalachia" since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs & LPs (many under the moniker Sacred Harp), with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. He has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose. His newest effort is the full length 'Seven Pines', sprung from a year living and working in the city of Philadelphia. The sound results in a combination of homesick worried blues and the ecstatic buzz of fresh experience and a new life in unknown territory. Join us, 4PM, Sunday April 14th, FREE! It's on. Autechre - Exai (Warp) .................................................. On March 5, 2013 Autechre will release their new album on Warp Records. Titled Exai the album is Rob Brown and Sean Booth's 11th full length album, and follows 2010's Oversteps and 2011's 47 track collection EPs 1991-2002. With a running time of 2 hours and 32 seconds, Exai will be available on 2 CDs or 4 pieces of vinyl. Chelsea Light Moving - s/t (Matador) .................................................. The band from Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Featuring the backing talents of Keith Wood on guitar, Samara Lubelski on bass and John Moloney on drums; the same band from Thurston's 2011 solo album Demolished Thoughts - but this time it hits hard with rock n roll noise. The man himself describes the tracks as "chug & shred burners," and they hit the usual mind blowing variety of rock-historical reference points and the primal clatter Thurston's pioneered for over three decades. Cloud Cult - Love (Earthology) .................................................. Cloud Cult developed in 1995 as a solo studio project of Craig Minowa. The band released their breakthrough album "Advice From The Happy Hippopotamus" in 2006 which Pitchfork called "insane genius" and rated the album with an 8.3. The band took up touring again with the 2010 release of Light Chasers which would be Cloud Cult's first album to make it onto the Billboard Charts. Now comes the release of "Love", the first new Cloud Cult album in 3 years. Jimi Hendrix - People, Hell & Angels (Sony) .................................................. A new album of 12 never before released Hendrix studio recordings. This special album showcases the legendary guitarist working outside of the original Experience trio. Beginning in 1968, Jimi grew restless, eager to develop new material with old friends and new ensembles. A musical companion piece and successor to 2010's critically acclaimed Valleys Of Neptune, PHA offers tantalizing new clues as to the direction Hendrix was considering for First Rays Of The New Rising Sun, his planned double album sequel to 68's groundbreaking Electric Ladyland. These 12 recordings encompass a variety of unique sounds and styles incorporating many of the elements- horns, keyboards, percussion and second guitar- Jimi wanted to incorporate within his new music. How to Destroy Angels - Welcome Oblivion (Columbia) .................................................. Full length debut from How to Destroy Angels. The most satisfying upshot of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ entanglement in the world of film and scoring has been the two’s now-commanding grasp of undiluted soundscaping. No longer does Reznor seem to require those worn-out phrases and sometimes-trite lyrical platitudes to drive his music forward. Themes of foreboding and heavy-heartedness no longer need words to be conjured. In Welcome Oblivion, words tastefully complement the music as a tool rather than as a crutch. This evolution gives new life and meaning to Reznor’s music as it allows the musicians involved to journey through their creations instead of merely spelling them out with conventional phrasing and lyricism. Javelin - Hi Beams (Luaka Bop) .................................................. Javelin's highly-anticipated second full-length album on Luaka Bop and represents a more holistic approach to writing and recording. Lyrics and vocal harmonies are for the first time fore-grounded in decidedly songlike forms, while songs are made to be performed in concert rather than as a patchwork of fragmented if glittery shards. The Men - New Moon (Sacred Bones) .................................................. With their 4th album released in as many years, The Men proudly present the sweeping New Moon, the most intensely personal and immersive installment yet. Never content to draw on the same methods twice, nor to recline under the heel of expectation, The Men quit the city in early 2012 to head for Big Indian, NY - transforming a remote Catskills locale into a full-fledged stray dog studio home. Entering with only the most skeletal sketches, the house was selected as an incubator for its technical limitations. FREE bonus CD with purchase! Josh Ritter - The Beast In Its Tracks (Pytheas) .................................................. Josh Ritter The Beast In Its Tracks is Ritter's first studio album in almost three years. The Beast In Its Tracks may well be remembered as Ritter's divorce record, as it was written and recorded in the wake of his 18-month marriage suddenly dissolving. RIYL Paul Simon and well crafted songs. Son Volt - Honky Tonk (Rounder) .................................................. From his earliest recordings in the 90s as a founding member of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar has been a keen observer of the American landscape: its beauties and its tragedies, salvations and poisons. His two-decades of touring and travel as the leader of Son Volt as well as a solo artist have deepened and sharpened his gift for capturing the sights and sounds of his American journey a gift which is in evidence once again on Son Volt's 6th album. Excavating, distilling and reimagining the classic honky tonk sound of Bakersfield, the music on this album is about heartache, but there's also optimism and perseverance. Pedal steel guitar and twin fiddles anchor a timeless music, in which the clear hard truths of the lyrics mine the emotional complexities of life and love, making it a landmark on a continuing journey. Free T-shirt with purchase while they last! Suuns - Images Du Futur (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Images du Futur builds upon the intensity of Suuns' 2010 debut, but often does so through new textures and subtler dynamic maneuvering. Album standout "Edie's Dream" begins with a single bass line repeated from which layers build & rise first drums, then a wash of white noise; echoes of guitar, then chanted vocals. The song's clever shifts are jazz-touched and delicate, almost subliminal. It all makes for a stark, skeletal boogie more an astral projection than a song. RIYL Clinic. Playing with Besnard Lakes at The Bishop April 22nd! They Might Be Giants - Nanobots (Idlewild) .................................................. The 16th album from the veteran duo. The album was produced by Patrick Dillett and was recorded in Manhattan. Nanobots features 25 tracks, most of them being extremely short songs. The album features guest appearances from Stan Harrison, Jon Graboff, Mike Doughty, Jedediah Parish, and Chris Thompson. The artwork was designed by Paul Sahre and features a collage by Sam Weber, which uses an image of a painting of Princess Pauline-Eleonore de Broglie by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Youth Lagoon - Wondrous Bughouse (Fat Possum) .................................................. Sophomore album from Boise native Trevor Powers AKA Youth Lagoon. Wondrous Bughous is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed 2011 release The Year of Hibernation. Powers says this album spawned from what he describes as becoming more "fascinated by the human psyche and where the spiritual world meets the physical world." Powers describes the writing process of his first album as a way for his mind to communicate with his body, not the other way around. It seems the same can be said for Wondrous Bughouse.
