Instore performance alert! Sunday April 14th at 4PM we will be featuring an intimate acoustic performance from Daniel Bachman (new album on Tompkins Square). Daniel was born and raised in Fredericksburg, VA. He has been playing what he describes as "psychedelic appalachia" since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs & LPs (many under the moniker Sacred Harp), with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. He has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose. His newest effort is the full length 'Seven Pines', sprung from a year living and working in the city of Philadelphia. The sound results in a combination of homesick worried blues and the ecstatic buzz of fresh experience and a new life in unknown territory. Join us, 4PM, Sunday April 14th, FREE! It's on. Devendra Banhart - Mala (Nonesuch) .................................................. Devendra presents his Nonesuch debut, Mala. The singer/songwriter co-produced the record with his longtime bandmate, guitarist Noah Georgeson. Banhart's eighth studio album, Mala was recorded in his then-home in Los Angeles. He and Georgeson played most of the instruments themselves, using borrowed equipment and a vintage Tascam recorder they d found in a pawn shop. Biffy Clyro - Opposites (WB) .................................................. The sixth album from the critically acclaimed Scottish trio. Produced by Gareth Richardson in Los Angeles, Opposites signals the band's growing ambition with 22 tracks spread across two discs: 'The Sand at the Core of Our Bones' and 'The Land at the End of Our Toes'. David Bowie - The Next Day (Columbia) .................................................. His first studio album in a decade and his 30th studio recording. The album was produced by long-term collaborator Tony Visconti. In recent years, radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumor and wishful thinking. A new record: who would have ever thought it? After all, David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants: when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today, he definitely has something to say. Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record; not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration, and social commentary. Available in regular format and w/ bonus tracks. Dead C vs Rangda - s/t (Ba Da Bing) .................................................. Two rigreat bands, each composed of two guitarists and a drummer. Every member's name carries its own legendary status. Rangda is Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance), and Chris Corsano. Fabricated empires have risen and been destroyed by the vast output of any one of these guys. Finally, they come together on one release: a split LP between two supergroups. Rangda recorded their two compositions at Russian Recording in Bloomington. Everything that brings these musicians together uncoils and commands. Beats of silence underscore tangents that lead back to main themes and out again. It's as though the years and years of playing under their collective belts has culminated in these glorious moments. Adrian Younge Presents the Delfonics - s/t (Wax Poetics) .................................................. The biggest brand in soul, the Delfonics, teams up with LA's hottest songwriter / producer, Adrian Younge (Black Dynamite, Ghostface Killah), for a true return-to-form on Wax Poetics Records! Totally stoked. Also, Adrian Younge's band will be backing up Ghostface Killah at his performance at the Bluebird this coming May. LP version forthcoming. Peep the first single and fall in love. Elephant Micah - Globe Rush Progressions LP (Bluesanct) .................................................. Collected from one-off sessions in the late 2000s, projects approached as a way to test out ideas, an opportunity to break rules. Recording in a public stairwell, writing about historical hairstyles, playing back stretched out cassettes, interpreting Big Star, all with a brazen commitment to home-production. Assembled, the tracks reflect the more exploratory aspects of Elephant Micah. Somewhere between sound art and song, the release documents Joe's work not just as a writer and singer, but also as a recordist and experimenter. Very limited, housed in a deluxe sleeve with insert and download card. Matthew Good - Old Fighters (Frostbyte) .................................................. Over his almost 2-decade career, Matthew Good has always chosen to do things differently. Those decisions have only served to reaffirm his place as one of Canada's most relevant artists, always inspired by new influences yet remaining inherently recognizable. He always manages to create an exciting and meaningful record. From Last of the Ghetto Astronauts with the Matthew Good Band to the 2011 JUNO winning release Vancouver, Matthew continually pushes forward into uncharted territory, mapping new musical landscapes. Caitlin Rose - The Stand-In (ATO) .................................................. New album from the country vocalist and former front woman for Nashville indie band Save Macaulay. Her vocal performance and lyrics have led to comparisons to Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Iris DeMent. Claire Suddath of Time Magazine named Catilin's debut album, Own Side Now, one of the Top 10 Albums of 2011, ranking it at #7. "Caitlin Rose has a deep appreciation for vintage country, a winsome voice that at time recalls Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and a sound that crosses indie folk with classic 50's Nashville" - Time Magazine Wild Belle - Isles (Columbia) .................................................. All bets are off once that saxophone comes in, blurting its brassy funk under the smoky vocal coo of Natalie Bergman. Elliott Bergman, formerly of Michigan afro-psych troop Nomo, mans the keys and guitar- and together, they sound so cool and confident on their debut that it feels more like a third or even fourth album. To say "electro-soul" wouldn't do this duo justice, though. By the second track they're already bouncing to a reggae-ish rhythm while sprinkling in Atari-like synth noises from some long-lost, half-cheesy new wave recipe. Isles is predominantly an effervescent saunter-in-the-sunshine type of record, squirming with ear-worm choruses, sweetened by Natalie's syrupy lullabies. Rich arrangements, complex sample loops, purring organs, kicking drum machines and doses of that welcome saxophone keep their 3-minute trips charming and often danceable. Eccentric Soul: The Dynamic Label (Numero Group) .................................................. Dynamic was just one of San Antonio record and real estate mogul Abe Epstein's enterprises. Dynamic's flagship outfit, the Commands, marched "No Time For You" to the middle of the charts in 1966 with performance chops honed jet-sharp by the demanding Air Force Base circuit. That takeoff paved a runway for 20 more soulful Dynamic singles over an impressive 30-month campaign. Epstein's opendoor policy brought a diverse cross-section of Texas talent into convergence within his General McMullan Drive studio, as whites, blacks, and Latinos alike suited up for service in whichever new group the call of duty called for. Epstein's Alamo City melting pot is ladled out here in 28 of Dynamic's most intriguing dishes by the Tonettes, Little Jr. Jesse & the Tear Drops, Don & the Doves, Willie Cooper & the Webs, Bobby Blackmon & His Soul Express, and Doc & Sal. VA - Sound City: Real To Reel OST/DVD (RCA) .................................................. Sound City, the film, was conceived by Dave Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The board, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Guns and Roses, Metallica, NIN, Rage Against The Machine and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years. The soundtrack is a collection of all-new songs, each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film. The new tracks feature an amazing and idiosyncratic cast of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Grohl's former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters bandmates, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Trent Reznor, Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Lee Ving of Fear and more.
