Be the first to buy the new album from Phosphorescent, 'Muchacho', and win a pair of tickets to the show at the Bishop on 3/28! First come, first serve. Sunday April 14th at 4PM we will be featuring an intimate acoustic performance from Daniel Bachman (Tompkins Square Records). Daniel was born and raised in Fredericksburg, VA. He has been playing what he describes as "psychedelic appalachia" since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs & LPs (many under the moniker Sacred Harp), with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. He has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose. His newest effort is the full length 'Seven Pines', sprung from a year living and working in the city of Philadelphia. The sound results in a combination of homesick worried blues and the ecstatic buzz of fresh experience and a new life in unknown territory. Join us, 4PM, Sunday April 14th, FREE! It's on. Record Store Day 2013 is locked and loaded for Saturday April 20th. Mark your calendars, plan your vacation, book a babysitter or call in sick to work. It's gonna be a good time! What to expect from us? Oh you know, quality live music, fun DJs, awesome records, some tasty refreshments, high fives, and ... surprises! We have begun the long task of rolling out information on the special releases for the day, watch the ever-growing gallery on our Facebook profile grow over the next few weeks and start planning your list for RSD! New Arrivals for March 19th .................................................. Alpha Rev - Bloom (Kirtland) .................................................. Just who are the shattered souls singer Casey McPherson sketches in his songs? Why an evocative cello solo on one track, and a killer guitar riff in the next? Eventually, under the sway of the band's music, it all becomes clear. It's there in the sweep of melody and brash confessions of McPherson's lyrics. Formed in 2005, Alpha Rev has won countless fans in its home base of Austin and beyond. Arthur Mag - MVEE Cover (Arthur) .................................................. After 20+ yrs navigating strange trips across underground psych terrains with a host of fellow free folk, musician Matt Valentine (MV&EE, Tower Recordings, etc) finally spills all possible beans in an unprecedented, career-summarizing interview by Byron Coley. Also in this issue: young Southern California psych-rock band Feeding People, fronted by the bewitching Jessie Jones; what made Melvins' 1992 Lysol the most unlikely religious record ever built; aromatic aphrodisiacs; a lengthy interview with the remarkable esoteric cartographer David Chaim Smith by Jay Babcock; author Austin Grossman chats about the basic weirdness of playing (and making) video games. Plus: page after page of all-new color comics; columns by the ever-provocative 'Weedeater' Nance Klehm and The Center for Tactial Magic; Byron Coley and Thurston Moore's essential underground review column, Bull Tongue, now expanded to two giant pages; and more stuff too hot to divulge here. Billy Bragg - Tooth & Nail (Cooking Vinyl) .................................................. The first new album in 5 years from the veteran British singer and political activist. Britain has never needed a Billy Bragg album as much as it needs one right now. Economic strife, unpopular foreign wars and the continued electoral gains of the Far Right mean that the country is gripped with uncertainty, a lack of confidence in its own identity. Far from solving the country's ills, Tooth & Nail promises to reflect the uncertain times in which we live on a personal level. Recorded with Joe Henry, guests include Greg Leisz (Bon Iver), Patrick Warren (Lana Del Rey), Jay Bellerose (Regina Spektor) and David Piltch (Ramblin' Jack Elliot). Clutch - Earth Rocker (Weathermaker) .................................................. The 10th studio album from the Maryland-based Hard Rockers. Earth Rocker has already received towering accolades from those that have heard snippets of the album. Some taste makers immediately notice that Clutch have gone heavier and faster than ever before. Others liken their new songs to the beating heart of 21st century rock'n'roll. Free poster with purchase. Simone Dinnerstein & Tift Merritt - Night (Sony) .................................................. Pianist Simone Dinnerstein & singer Tift Merritt join forces in a unique collaboration merging classical, folk, and rock worlds, exploring common terrain and uncovering new musical landscapes. Night features new songs written especially for the duo by Brad Mehldau and Patty Griffin, as well as Tift's own songs and classical selections. The album also includes the world premiere recording of The Cohen Variations by Daniel Felsenfeld, a solo piano piece commissioned by Dinnerstein based on one of her favorite songs, Leonard Cohen's Suzanne. Colleen Green - Sock It To Me (Hardly Art) .................................................. Colleen is a powerful DIY force of one. She looms large, not only in the basement scene of the USA. People left and right fall for her style and brand of popular music and why wouldn't they? Everything is in this pot: You get some Stacey Q, Tom Tom Club, Nu Shooz and mix it up nicely with Descendents, Ramones, and Fastbacks, then, light it up with a fire made from the bones of Sebadoh? The smoke that comes from all of this is Colleen's first full length for Hardly Art. Sweet and custom made, just for you. Playing the Bishop w/ Jaill on May 2nd! Krief - Hundred Thousand Pieces (Rock Ridge) .................................................. Krief is Montreal-based artist Patrick Krief (guitarist for The Dears). On his self-produced, self-mixed album, Krief played nearly all the instruments himself and was committed to creating music that was strongly evocative, inspired by his work scoring films. The 10 songs on the album deal with his anxieties about growing older and continuing down the financially precarious road of a professional musician. Low - The Invisible Way (Sub Pop) .................................................. "While driving though Chicago we stopped to visit Wilco at their studio. They had invited us to come check it out several times over the years. Its a great place, a sea of instruments in a relaxed, open working environment. Its cool, but what really converted us was hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks they were working on: big, simple, raw, and intimate. Plans were made then and there. How is this different from any other Low record? Mimi sings lead on 5 of the 11 songs (she usually only does one or two). Piano, lots of piano, and an acoustic guitar. Songs about intimacy, the drug war, the class war, plain old war, archeology, and love." - Alan Sparhawk. FREE bonus CD while they last. Phosphorescent - Muchacho (Dead Oceans) .................................................. Matthew Houck has a distinctive artistic voice and a refreshing, rolled-sleeves approach to his work. 2007's Pride was a spare and haunting work of country, southern gospel and forlorn folk drone first caused ears to swivel in his direction. He followed it with To Willie, then 2010's Here's To Taking It Easy, an enthusiastic plunge into country rock n rolling Americana. Now, his 6th album flashes yet another color in the subtly shifting Phosy spectrum. Be the first to buy the new album and win a pair of tickets to the show at the Bishop on 3/28! VA - RZA Presents: Shaolin Soul Selection (Soul Temple) .................................................. In the early 90s, RZA had begun making music for his Staten Island based supergroup, Wu-Tang Clan. When 'Enter The 36 Chambers' was finally released in late 93, the effect was seismic. The RZA's "awkward" combination of rugged drums and off-center loops formed the foundation of a unique sound that would inspire a whole new generation of samplists, as well as set off searches for the components of those loops. What we have here is 24 tracks - nearly 2 1/2 hours of essential soul music from the vaults of Stax Records and its subsidiary labels that inspired RZA and the classic sound of The Wu-Tang Clan.
