Get em now or regret it later. New Arrivals for April 16th .................................................. Steve Earle - Low Highway (New West) .................................................. Between the opening title track and the reflective closing of "Remember Me," this is very much Steve Earle's road record, and one that has seen many miles. The Low Highway features two songs Earle co-wrote with Lucia Micarelli, his co-star in David Simon's original HBO Series Treme. Earle played a recurring character, Harley, a street musician who mentored Micarelli's character Annie during the first two seasons. The songs were written specifically for the series and an additional song written by Earle for Treme, "That All You Got?" was performed by Micarelli's character with the Red Stick Ramblers during the third season premiere. The Flaming Lips - The Terror (WB) .................................................. The Terror was produced by the band's long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and The Flaming Lips at Tarbox Road Studios. It is comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works, along with a more inward-looking lyrical perspective than one might expect but then again, maybe not. Its up to you, the listener, to decide what it means to you. Recommended! Jonny Fritz - Dad Country (ATO) .................................................. Nashville songwriter Jonny Fritz's work ethic and boldness have paid off in spades. Dad Country is the first release under his real name, ditching the "Corndawg" moniker he'd carried since his early teens. It's been a big year for Jonny with opening stints for Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Dawes, Shooter Jennings and kudos from CMT and Rolling Stone. Like his songwriting heroes Tom T. Hall, Michael Hurley, Roger Miller and Clint Black, Jonny can turn phrases 'til you're dizzy, all while plucking your heartstrings or capturing a sharp, lonesome vulnerability that never seems lost or brooding. Futurebirds - Baba Yaga (Fat Possum) .................................................. Baba Yaga marks a milestone in the continuous evolution of the eclectic ensemble. The 13-song album finds Futurebirds delivering an expansive yet intimate set that takes the band's trademark mix of earthily accessible songcraft and free-spirited experimentation into inspired new territory. Like the band that made it, Baba Yaga defies easy categorization, boasting a beguiling blend of warmly catchy tunes, stirringly evocative lyrics, distinctive sonic textures and unexpected melodic twists. The music is both intense and uplifting, capturing a good deal of the soaring, primal, sweat-soaked spirit of their live shows. Ghost BC - Infestissumam (Republic) .................................................. Live, they're a striking sight: five robed, hooded, anonymous musicians churning away, the similarly nameless, face-painted singer garishly adorned in vestments and miter, clutching a chain thurible filled with burning incense. He is a beelzebubian bishop, a pagan pontiff. It might look corny, but there's no wink, no sense of irony. Rather than trying to look evil, his face is dead serious. He has stuff to say, and he means every word.' - PopMatters Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge - Twelve Reasons to Die (Soul Temple) .................................................. The 10th studio album from the iconic rapper and prominent member of the Wu-Tang Clan. Twelve Reasons To Die is a concept album based on a comic book of the same name. The album was entirely produced and composed by Adrian Younge, and executive produced by RZA. Free comic book or tape with purchase while they last! Playing live at Bluebird on May 2! Houses - A Quiet Darkness (Downtown) .................................................. Houses is comprised of just two poignantly creative musical souls based in Chicago. A Quiet Darkness presents not only an aural feast, but a tale to follow - a tale of unrequited love which unfolds in the midst of a nuclear disaster. The album represents the journey of an enamored husband and wife desperate to reunite, yet kept apart by destruction and chaos. Each song on the album represents an abandoned house along the Highway 10 in California, where the fictional lovers so bravely trek in search of one another only to be kept apart by death's eternal embrace. Iron & Wine - Ghost on Ghost (Nonesuch) .................................................. Ghost on Ghost is the fifth album from Sam Beam. The album was produced by Beam's longtime associate Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone, Fruit Bats). For Ghost on Ghost, Beam sought to move from what he called the "anxious tension" of his two previous records. "This record felt like a reward to myself after the way I went about making the last few," he says. Helping achieve Beam's vision was a group of stellar musicians. Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio) has worked with Beam intermittently through the years and handled arrangements for strings and horns. Major Lazer - Free The Universe (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. Diplo has risen through the ranks and asserted himself as one of the most pioneering producers of the time. Through unending curiosity and exploration of the vast multitudes of the world's musical heritages, Diplo has managed to seamlessly connect the global underground to the audio mainstream. Features Santigold, Vampire Weekend, Wyclef Jean, Bruno Mars, Peaches, Shaggy, Laidback Luke and plenty more guests! Meat Puppets - Rat Farm (Royal Potato) .................................................. Meat Puppets, the pioneering punk'n'western Arizona cactus-kickers, are returning this month with their 14th album. The band said they were gonna "play it kind of straight" on this one, but it's certainly no flat desert-rocker: there's loping country-ska like classic Camper Van Beethoven, broken hard rock, and dreamy guitar solos. But don't take our word for it, here's the harmony-soaked, Neil Young-gone-120-Minutes chimer "Original One." Guitarist Curt Kirkwood tells us: "I wrote this one for Frank Sinatra, but I heard he wasnt around anymore, so we decided to record it for Rat Farm." Willie Nelson - Let's Face The Music and Dance (Sony) .................................................. Following the success of his 2012 album Heroes, Willie returns, this time with his Family band, to deliver another beautiful new album of songs that are near and dear to his heart. This stunning collection is not easily defined by genre or style. The songs include American standards and country classics; Irving Berlin, Carl Perkins, Django Reinhart as well as Willie-penned originals. Yet the result is a beautiful, cohesive set songs about love and reflection in Willie's inimitable style. It is a record in the vein of both Stardust and Redheaded Stranger and destined to become a classic. Thee Oh Sees - Floating Coffin (Castle Face) .................................................. Each of the dozen-plus albums they've released since 2004 possesses a distinct personality and represents a different point along the path of John Dwyer's slow transformation from auteur of woozy, bare-bones psychedelia to goggle-eyed garage rock marauder backed at long last by a band that both shares and stokes his singular vision. The band that made last year's engrossing Putrifiers II seems like a distant cousin to the one delivering Floating Coffin - arguably the most varied and textured Oh Sees record to date. Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information / Wings of Love (Legacy) .................................................. Like Stevie Wonder and Allen Toussaint before him- and Prince and D'Angelo afterward- Shuggie was a musical visionary whose early 70s recordings showed he could do it all, writing, arranging, performing, and producing some of the decade's most satisfying, innovative, and, unfortunately, overlooked music. This reissue of his 1974 Inspiration Information album- a soulful song cycle that took 3 years to create and was worth every minute- ranges from early drum machine-driven experiments to Otis' most stunning pop confection ever, "Strawberry Letter 23." Snoop Lion - Reincarnated DVD (RCA) .................................................. Reincarnated traces the life and career of hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, as he embarks on a journey of reincarnation of self that is equal parts career reinvention and spiritual reawakening. The close-up documentary, directed by Andy Capper, seamlessly showcases his journey and controversial transformation from hip-hop star to reggae singer while he was recording his new album Reincarnated. The Thermals - Desperate Ground (Saddle Creek) .................................................. Desperate Ground is the sixth album (and the first to be released on Saddle Creek) from The Thermals. The album was produced by John Agnello whose previous credits include Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and the Hold Steady. The band describes the album as "a cross between two of our best-known and loved records, More Parts Per Million and The Body, The Blood, The Machine. It's loud, fast, incredibly scary and undeniably catchy." Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mosquito (Interscope) .................................................. The most controversial artwork of the year thus far? The band, whose members were once lovingly labeled by Rolling Stone as the 'goth, the nerd and the slut' have recorded three studio albums: All 3 albums were nominated for a Grammy award. Free 7" single with purchase while they last! Tape & Vinyl Zone ..................................................
