New Arrivals for April 30th .................................................. Ceramic Dog - Your Turn (Northern Spy) .................................................. A free/punk/funk/experimental/psychedelic/post electronica collective, featuring Marc Ribot (cubanos postizos, john zorn, tom waits, etc), plus two of the best young players on the new york/california underground improv/experimental rock scene, Shahzad Ismaily - bass/electronics (Will Oldham, Secret Chiefs 3, Jolie Holland, Yoko Ono) and Ches Smith - drums (Xiu Xiu, Good for Cows, Secret Chiefs 3). Not a 'project': a real band. !!! - Thr!!!er (Warp) .................................................. Famous for their high-energy live shows, !!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk) have really focused their efforts on crafting an album with tighter song structures, and the results are stunning. The album was produced by Jim Eno, the drummer from Spoon. Like many people, Jim was a fan of !!!'s live show, but he felt that they too often tried to capture these performances in the studio. Instead of trying to chase this feeling, Jim encouraged them to create a different type of excitement by using weirder sounds, inventing new dynamics within each song and introducing unexpected changes. They had this working flow that was a little rigid and I wanted to break them out of it, says Jim. Daughter - If You Leave (Glassnote) .................................................. Less of a statement of intent, these songs are more a snapshot of a year in Daughter's short life. Lyrically, Elena plumbs the depths of her psyche to reveal her innermost thoughts, finding catharsis in expounding those internal demons. There may be little light relief here, but the personal themes have universal appeal; tales of doubt, insecurity, fear, anger and loneliness all take centre stage. Musically, Daughter balance an intricate interplay between vocal, guitar and rhythm section. Elena's vocals are fractured, often delivering savage words with a smoke-tinged whisper. Igor wrestles his guitar to build up a stark and brutal landscape, colliding with Elena's more structured rhythm guitar. All are punctuated by the jolts of Remi's minimalist drums. Guided by Voices - English Little League (GBV) .................................................. The 4th album from the reunited "classic" Guided By Voices lineup of Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Greg Demos, Mitch Mitchell and Kevin Fennell-hums like angry birds along the full spectrum of rock's highways and byways (especially the byways), from rock to roll and back again. Pollard's rebus system of songwriting (sounds made visible, abstract concepts symbolized) strung like fairy lights from the opening song "Xeno Pariah" to the galvanic closer "With Glass in Foot," kettles along at full steam throughout, punctuated by the airier constructs of Sprout ("The Sudden Death of Epstein's Ways," with its sweet / creepy emphatic refrain of "Jesus," is a particular standout). Hanni El Khatib - Head in the Dirt (Innovative Leisure) .................................................. Head In The Dirt, produced by Dan Auerbach, is the second album by Hanni, where he takes a lucky 11 songs and makes the entire history of rebel music something all his own. He's got cut-to-the-bone rhythm n blues and over-cranked Stooges-style stompers. He's got bottomless Black Sabbath riff-outs and Dub-a-delic garageland rockers that call up the spirits of the Clash and the Equals both. By the end of Head In The Dirt, you'll realize that El Khatib actually made something out of everything. Mojo Magazine - Eric Clapton Cover (Mojo) .................................................. In his most honest interview ever the peerless guitarist talks to Michael Simmons about owning up, growing up, getting sober, growing old and his constant companion, the blues. Plus Dave Gahan, Yoko Ono, Eric Burdon, Nick Cave, Billy Bragg & Paul Weller, John Grant and much more! Plus a FREE CD: Towering items from the blues canon by Howlin Wolf, Bo Diddley, Robert Johnson, Skip James, Big Bill Broonzy and more. Neon Neon - Praxis Makes Perfect (Lex) .................................................. Neon Neon (Gruff Rhys and Boom Bip) present their new album - the follow up to 2008's Mercury Music Prize nominated Stainless Style. It is a musical biopic of Italian publisher, Giangiacomo Feltrinelli's colourful life viewed through the lens of Gruff Rhys highly original song writing and Boom Bip's shimmering synth-heavy production. Guests on this album include two previous Neon Neon co-conspirators in Josh Klinghoffer of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cardiff's Cate Le Bon, plus Italian pop sensation Sabrina Salerno and actress Asia Argento. Shivas - Whiteout (K) .................................................. The Shivas are friends and sweethearts who grew up playing music together, launching Kickstarters for a tour van and then coming of age driving that van around the country. Having played literally hundreds of shows together just after high school, The Shivas' joy and serious performing chops set them apart from other surf-pop bands in the swarming Portland music scene. Like their Burger Record cassette-mates Thee Oh Sees before them, The Shivas' sweet harmonies and sun-baked sound harkens back to the origins of surf rock, and are too compelling for the physical senses to refuse. Iggy & the Stooges - Ready to Die (Fat Possum) .................................................. The first studio album to bear the name 'Iggy & The Stooges' since Raw Power was released in 1973! Complete with Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass. The results are the closest thing to a time capsule to 1973 - or at least to Iggy's subsequent efforts with Williamson, including 1977's Kill City and 1979's New Values - that rock is likely to proffer in this millennium. The new album's opening one-two of 'Burn' and 'Sex & Money' pair sublimely blunt and self-explanatory subject matter with back alley razor-blade guitars and a troglodytic rhythmic stomp as intensely single-minded as Iggy's lyrical statements of intent. The Vallures - Reposession Man 7" (self) .................................................. The Vallures are 5 ladies + 1 gentleman from Bloomington who are giving the hits of the 60s a fresh new face. Bringing the girl group era Motown, rock, soul, rhythm and blues, to life once again with new twists and all the energy and creativity of the originals. Although the focus is on the girl group covers The Vallures are all from very diverse musical backgrounds and this reflects in song choice and style. Jes Franco put the group together in March of 2010 in an effort to play music she loved while featuring women as musicians. Backed by Libby (keys) Dani (drums) Bryce (bass) and Meredith (guitar) along with Laura (vocals & percussion) add to their "wall of sound". And now they have a record featuring their first ever original songs! Via Vegrandis - s/t EP (Flannelgraph) .................................................. Via Vegrandis is Jared Bane, from Crown Point, IN. Ever wondered what it's like to be a dude from Crown Point, Indiana? Well this is for you - especially if you enjoy the sound of bands like Orange Juice, Felt, The Durutti Column, The Smiths, etc. coated in a mouthwatering sheen of oopy doopy Labrador Records glaze. "This is great pop music." - Musical Family Tree The Weeks - Dear Bo Jackson (Serpents & Snakes) .................................................. Drawing inspiration from such iconic works as The Band's Music From The Big Pink, The Weeks enriched their well-seasoned sonic stew with the classic flavors of soul, R&B, funk, and heavy boogie to create their own unique take on contemporary Southern rock. Big brass, lush strings, and twangy pedal steel have been fused into the bands trademark sludge-pop sound, with greasy guitars, highly charged engine room bass. Throughout the album, Cyle Barnes rends his throat raw as he tells dramatic and truthful tales of modern Southern lives, full of hope despite often punishing circumstances. Wolf People - Fain (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Recorded in an isolated house in the Yorkshire Dales, Fain is the sound of a band at the peak of their creative powers. It's an honest and natural album that allows its stories and melodies to breathe. The album draws on more traditional English and Scottish folk melodies than anything they've done before, but not straying from the drop-out fuzz-rock route they've made their own. RIYL Dungen, Nuggets, Jethro Tull. Zs - Grain (Northern Spy) .................................................. The new Zs lineup sounds very much like a new band, at least as evidenced by the Grain EP. The two side-length tracks (42-mins) bear the marks of Zs' sound - repeated phrases, looped or played; buried drones and harsh electronic tones - but it does sound very much like a new band. There's an extended ambience to the album that trick perceptions of time. Glitches and waves that last only a minute somehow feel as if they've gone on throughout the whole record. Something very mysterious goes on within the grooves. Hillmer and Higgins teamed up to create Part One of Grain while Greg Fox (Man Forever, Guardian Alien) built Part Two. It's a great listen and it's also an inventive segue. Tape & Vinyl Zone ..................................................
