Thursday, May 23rd at 7PM at IU Cinema. The Source Family was a radical experiment in 70s utopian living. Their outlandish style, popular health food restaurant, rock band, and beautiful women made them the darlings of Hollywood's Sunset Strip; but their outsider ideals and the unconventional behavior of their spiritual leader, Father Yod, caused controversy with local authorities. They fled to Hawaii, leading to their dramatic demise. The Source Family documentary film is being presented in partnership with Landlocked Music, IU Cinema and Drag City Records. Free tickets are available exclusively at Landlocked Music. The soundtrack for the film is out now, and will be available in the Cinema before and after the screening along with other Ya Ho Wa treasures. Join us for a rare solo performance from a master experimental guitarist. Alan Licht is passing through town in the backing band for Lee Ranaldo. He will be playing a FREE instore set on Sunday May 26th at 4PM. He has worked with a veritable who's who of the experimental world, from free jazz legends (Rashied Ali, Peter Brotzmann) and electronica wizards (Fennesz, Jim O'Rourke) to turntable masters (DJ Olive, Christian Marclay) and veteran Downtown NYC composers (Phill Niblock, Rhys Chatham). Licht is also renown in the indie rock scene as a bandleader and supporting player to cult legends like Tom Verlaine, Arthur Lee, Arto Lindsay, and Jandek. More recently, in 2009, Family Vineyard released the YMCA live album. In 2012, he edited the book 'Will Oldham on Bonnie "Prince" Billy'. Alan has a new album, Four Years Older, out now on Editions Mego. New Arrivals for May 21st .................................................. Alpine - A is for Alpine (Turnout) .................................................. Six friends from Melbourne who make bold, twinkling, sophisticated pop music. Their debut record is a collection of vibrant songs that shimmer and shine with colorful harmonies and inventive melodies. Featuring the dual vocals of front women Phoebe Baker and Lou James, Christian O'Brien on guitar, Ryan Lamb on bass, Tim Royall on keys and Phil Tucker on drums, Alpine traverse diverse themes, ideas and sounds on the album, always assured, but never quite taking themselves too seriously. Phoebe Baker describes A Is For Alpine as the band's "innocent and not so innocent explorations through our 20-something emotions." Baptist Generals - Jackleg Devotional to the Heart (Sub Pop) .................................................. Jackleg Devotional to the Heart is The Baptist Generals' sophomore album. The Denton, TX band, known for its haunting, claustrophobic take on drunken folk, needed ten full years to bare its hearts, after Chris Flemmons recorded the album's first attempt in 2005, and then trashed it because, according to him, "it sounded like any other indie rock-type band." Jackleg Devotional to the Heart was Co-produced by Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, Cat Power, The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes) and the band's Jason Reimer, and it sounds like exactly no one else. They are also opening for Mountain Goats at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater on June 15th. JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound - Howl (Bloodshot) .................................................. New release from Chicago's modern Soul band. Throughout Howl, the dark side of love and longing is explored by frontman JC Brooks's starkly personal lyrics and the Uptown Sound's willingness to bare all their influences and let the grooves fall where they may. A collective evolution has been made where influence meets experience, and this organic progression results in 11 songs that are more open than ever both in message and vibe. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (Columbia) .................................................. Random Access Memories is the new album from Daft Punk. Collaborators include Nile Rodgers, Chilly Gonzalez, Giorgio Moroder, Julian Casablancas, Pharrell Williams, Paul Williams, Todd Edwards, Panda Bear and DJ Falcon. Free robot mask while supplies last! The Front Bottoms - Talon of the Hawk (Bar/None) .................................................. At the core of this album is the crazy hybrid of slamming rock drumming and acoustic guitar The Front Bottoms are known for, but this time the band augments their sound with electric guitars, synths, even a little accordion. Brian Sella's confident heartfelt vocals that will have you laughing one minute, crying the next and then maybe pumping your fist and singing along when you least suspect it. Talon of the Hawk rocks harder than their debut and it is more complex in both subject matter and arrangements. The National - Trouble Will Find Me (4AD) .................................................. Trouble Will Find Me is The National s highly anticipated sixth album. Formed in 1999, the Ohio-raised, Brooklyn- based band consists of vocalist Matt Berninger fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) & Bryce Dessner (guitar), and Scott (bass, guitar) & Bryan Devendorf (drums). The band's previous 4AD release, High Violet, was met with critical acclaim. "The National is in a league of its own... (They have found) their way to a big new sound." - NY Times Mag. Free mini-poster while they last. Rolling Stones - Crossfire Hurricane (Eagle Rock) .................................................. This superb new film tells the story of the Stones' unparalleled journey from blues obsessed teenagers in the early 60s to their undisputed status as rock royalty. All of the Stones have been newly interviewed and their words form the narrative arc that links together archive footage of performances, news coverage and interviews, much of it previously unseen. Crossfire Hurricane gives the viewer an intimate insight into exactly what it's like to be part of The Stones as they overcome denunciation, drugs, dissensions and death to become the definitive survivors. Over a year in the making and produced with the full co-operation and involvement of the band, it is and will remain the definitive story of the world's greatest rock n roll band. Shannon and the Clams - Dreams in the Rat House (Hardly Art) .................................................. A throw back doo wop, rock trio that features Shannon (of Hunx and His Punx) and Cody (aka King Lollipop) on songwriting duty and shared vocals. The Clams have a large following that grows by the day as they tour the planet and bring their childlike sense of humor, gorgeous vocals, and true to the game Animal House style garage rock n roll to the dance party. Production is raw, like Hazel Adkins raw, while the songs are sweet like honey poured from an Etta James shaped bottle. LP version delayed, sorry! VA - Good God! Aprocryphal Hymns (Numero Group) .................................................. The third installment in Numero's series of otherworldly gospel, robed funk, and spiritual soul, Apocryphal Hymns is a slim new gospel songbook, penned powerfully by the genre's lesser-known disciples. Here, heavenly harmonies, psychedelic guitars, damaged sacred steel, a bleeding french horn, off-kilter choirs, and consumer-side electronic percussion decorate the Word, with performance modes that stray far from the flock, but hew always to the message. In homage to the the stock jacket record industry of the 1970s, select one of these four alternate covers: Woodland Twilight, Seashore Morning, Mountain Waterfall, and Sunbeam Canyon. VA - The Source Family OST (Drag City) .................................................. Soundtrack to The Source Family documentary, a selection of material that was chosen to include the widest variety of Source Family members, showcasing the talents of many not previously showcased. In addition, you'll also hear the contributions of Cinderella, Ahom, Aquariana, Anastasia, Rhythm, Horn, Electron, Zoroaster, Vibration, Pythias, Damian and Zinaru - and of course, the omnipotent Yahowa himself, Father Yod. Catch the film at IU Cinema this Thursday at 7PM for FREE! Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ..................................................
