Hiya. Advance notice: Landlocked will be closed on Thursday July 4th. We are celebrating our own independent biz by taking the day off for Independence Day. Also of note, several of these titles will not arrive until later today because of delays at our main distributor. Feel free to check ahead of time - we will have em all ASAP! Thanks. You should notice a new portion to the shows listed in our newsletter for select Indianapolis concerts. These are available as online sales only. Just follow the links and from our website or email! Thanks to MOKB Presents for ticket giveaways to some of these shows and more in the future! New Arrivals for June 25th .................................................. Big Star - Nothing Can Hurt Me (Omnivore) Nothing Can Hurt Me traces the origins and history of the legendary band- from 16 year old Alex Chilton sky-rocketing to stardom in the late 60s with The Box Tops and their #1 hit, The Letter; through the tumultuous recording of the group's landmark albums; culminating with their implosion due to failed record sales, personal breakdowns, and the tragic death of Chris Bell. Big Star's 3 albums (all of which charted on Rolling Stone's Top 500 albums of All Time) have become critically lauded touchstones of the rock music canon, and they are a seminal band in the history of music, being cited as an influence by artists including REM, Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, Elliott Smith, Wilco, Beck, Jeff Buckley and Flaming Lips. This soundtrack captures the essence of the documentary and plays like an audio version of the film. Wholly comprised of previously unissued versions of classic Big Star, Chris Bell and Alex Chilton songs, and includes demos, plus alternate original and new mixes made especially for the film. Bosnian Rainbows - s/t (Sargent House) What happens when Omar Rodriguez Lopez (At The Drive In / Mars Volta) leads a band alongside Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes) Both powerful and iconoclastic performers, the two somehow join together without crowding each other out. Every song on Bosnian Rainbows is catchy and anthemic, with frequent nods to the 80s work of Simple Minds and Bowie. Lopez, who can get too tangled in his own head, here finds a way to package his ideas in a succinct and digestible way. Songs like the bouncy "Torn Maps" and the wistful "Turtlenecks" are easy to enjoy, but not too reduced - they're full of rich narratives, unusual musical progressions and cryptic, -esque lyrics to keep listeners feeling both included and intrigued. Hausu - Total (Hardly Art) Pacific Northwest's angry young men are here. The beauty of rock-music lies in the expanse of terrain that it encompasses as a definition. Total aims to acknowledge that freedom; it is at times melodious and at others dissonant, all in all, a finished product, a totality. With this in mind: Total is the debut LP from Portland's Hausu, and the band's first for Hardly Art. Highly RIY Love: Polvo, Sebadoh, the Cure, Unwound. Hawthorne Heights - Zero (Red River) Zero, at its core, is a story of good and evil. 'The setting is a dystopian future where a totalitarian corporation has risen to power in the wake of a disaster, The Fires. Zero is an account of the events from the perspective of the main character in the story, Baker. The album's tracklisting is based upon those events. Jillette Johnson - Water In A Whale (Wind-Up) For Jillette the journey has been as integral to her musical experience as the destination. She began taking music lessons and penning songs as a child, has been performing live since she was 12, captivating audiences with her sultry, thoughtful piano-driven tunes. The musician, now 23, has spent the last decade cultivating her sound and defining her unique perspective. The album centers on her soaring vocals and the sparse, haunting piano lines she wrote to accompany them. Booker T Jones - Sound The Alarm (Stax) Booker T is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Arguably, as the leader of the legendary Memphis soul icons, Booker T and the MG's, he single-handedly set the cast for modern soul on classic Stax tunes like "Green Onions" and "Time is Tight." A plethora of captivating artists join Booker on his upcoming celebratory return to Stax Records, including Anthony Hamilton, Raphael Saadiq, Mayer Hawthorne, Estelle, Vintage Trouble, Luke James and James Jay Picton among many others. Gary Clark Jr., Poncho Sanchez, and Sheila E. also contribute their singular instrumental prowess to the soulful tracks. Lightning Dust - Fantasy (Jagjaguwar) Lightning Dust's (the duo comprised of Amber Webber and Josh Wells from Black Mountain) 3rd proper full length finds its inspiration in skeletal synth pop, modern R&B beats, the films of John Carpenter and - in accordance with Lightning Dust's only longstanding rule - absolute minimalism. The core of Fantasy lies as much in the songwriting as in its sonics, and begins with tools familiar to Webber and Wells: her acoustic guitar and his Wurlitzer piano. They worked to distill the arrangements to just the few key elements that were necessary to make the feel right, and through countless hours of labor in The Balloon Factory. Mixtapes - Ordinary Silence (No Sleep) It's been a busy year for Mixtapes. Almost a year ago to the day of the upcoming release for Ordinary Silence they made a splash with their debut full-length, Even On The Worst Nights, which quickly catapulted the band to the forefront of indie-punk as one of the most exciting bands to hit the scene in years. And now, only a short year later, the prolific band returns to crank up the volume for fans with a raw, heartfelt album that could prove to be their best yet. Mood Rings - VPI Harmony (Mexican Summer) The debut album from this Atlanta-based band is certainly not easy to pigeonhole. Shifting seamlessly from taut post-punk to lush 60s balladry, and starry-eyed guitar pop to moody guitar squall, VPI Harmony is the sound of a band meticulously studied in their influences, and unafraid to expand, combine and re-imagine the sounds of their musical loves into their own signature package. Willie Nile - American Ride (Loud & Proud) New release from the veteran NY-based songwriter. There are 12 new songs on the album in a variety of styles, from the journey across America title track, which Bono called "a classic',' to the front lines of 'Life On Bleecker Street,' to the madness of 'Holy War,' to a cover of Jim Carroll's great song 'People Who Died.' There are electric and acoustic guitars, pianos, drums, electric bass, upright bass, organ, horns, soft shoe routines, rockers, ballads, shuffles- you name it. Queensryche - s/t (Century) New album from the Progressive Metal band fronted by new lead vocalist Todd La Torre. Todd joined original members Michael Wilton, Scott Rockenfield and Eddie Jackson when original vocalist Geoff Tate left to form his own version of the band. The album was produced by James Barton, who has previously mixed and engineered Queensryche's hit albums Operation: Mindcrime and Empire, and co-produced Promised Land. Deluxe 2CD edition includes a bonus CD containing 4 live tracks. Rose Windows - The Sun Dogs (Sub Pop) Rose Windows began in late 2010 in Seattle. On their debut album, The Sun Dogs, the band incorporates elements of The Band, The Doors' organ-driven psychedelia, and Black Sabbath's dirges, along with Persian, Indian, and Eastern European music. Rose Windows have toured the West Coast several times, fluidly sharing the stage with underground art-metal bands one night and popular indie Americana acts the next. The Sun Dogs was engineered and produced by Randall Dunn (SunnO))), Boris, Earth). Smith Westerns - Soft Will (Mom & Pop) Soft Will is their follow-up to their 2011 album Dye It Black. The album was recorded with producer Chris Coady, who also worked on Dye It Blonde (as well as albums by Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and TV On The Radio), at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas. Mavis Staples - One True Vine (Anti) Coming off the huge success of her first collaboration with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, Mavis wanted to make their 2nd album together both a continuation of the joyous spirit of the first, and an evolution. With new song offerings from Alan Sparhawk of Low, Nick Lowe, and 3 Tweedy originals, One True Vine is at once a darker and more uplifting album, anchored by reinventions of two 70s classics- Funkadelic's "Can You Get to That?" and the Staples Singer's "I Like the Things About Me." Three O'Clock - The Hidden World Revealed (Omnivore) They called it The Paisley Underground. A 1980s, So-Cal sound that mixed pure-pop sensibilities with psychedelic overtones. They eventually signed to IRS Records and even made an LP for Prince's Paisley Park imprint, but it is their early material that is not only adored, but which has never been properly compiled and re-introduced. This is a 20-track collection from the years 1981-86. In addition to hits from their tenure on Frontier Records, the CD features rare singles, demos and alternate takes. It helps tell the story of where the band started and what they would achieve recording for major labels and opening for bands like R.E.M. on national tours.
