Summer is here, but don't let the downtown parking meters drag ya down! They aren't live yet. Hot new releases, comin' atcha! New Arrivals for July 9th .................................................. Burnt Ones - You'll Never Walk Alone (Burger) The 2nd LP from these ex-Hoosiers calls to mind the American heritage of rambling seekers kicking about a new idea with an old set of tools - affirming that its what you make of it and how far you take it that counts. Taking it far, far out there, the themes of isolation, loneliness, and survival found therein reveal the growth of this 3 piece, having learned that moving inward is often the only way of moving onward. With blinders up, Burnt Ones have given us a record that white-knuckles down a dark passage of mental abuse and on through to spiritual release. Unencumbered by the fear of new frontiers, the band have extended a hand to the listener, urging us to forge ahead, to diverge from the two-lane blacktop, break from the grids of any map and speed off into the void. Fat Freddy's Drop - Blackbird (The Drop) Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy's Drop gradually became its members' sole focus. Band members continued playing with their other respective groups-The Black Seeds, TrinityRoots, Bongmaster, and others-for much of their 13-year career. Fat Freddy's Drop are known for their improvised live performances; songs on their studio albums are versions refined over years of playing them live in New Zealand, and on tour abroad. Daughn Gibson - Me Moan (Sub Pop) Carlisle, PA's Daughn Gibson first emerged - not withstanding Daughn's stint drumming for Pearls & Brass - in 2012 with the critically-acclaimed debut, All Hell, on which he shook the ghosts out of scratchy Christian folk records and baptized them as fierce Americana with his booming baritone voice. On Me Moan, Daughn's second album and Sub Pop debut, he truly reveals himself to the world. While the roots of All Hell's sample-based music remain, these songs are performed live, including guitars by John Baizley of Baroness and Jim Elkington of Brokeback. Bonus 7" while supplies last! Gregory Alan Isakov - The Weathermen (Suitcase) Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and calling Colorado home, Gregory has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality beyond his years tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. His song-craft lends to the deepest lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. He has been described as "strong, subtle, a lyrical genius," but the source of his writing often remains a mystery to him. "My songs have nothing to do with me; they have a life of their own. A lot of times I won't know what a song is about when I'm writing it. It just has a certain feeling about it." Jook - Jook Rule OK (Sing Sing) Of all the Junk Shop Glam bands that caused a small blip on the radar screen of Glam, the most impressive and captivating sounds were delivered by a hard rocking quartet that never even considered themselves Glam: Jook. It was time and place that ushered them into the genre... that, and a role call of admirers that included impresario Mickie Most, label mates The Sweet, and a band that apparently shared the same tailor, the Bay City Rollers. Jook came on like bastard sons of The Who and, if this first ever collection of the band's entire recorded works achieves anything, it should be to elevate the band from the Glitter Bin, and back to their rightful place as one of the greatest rock n' roll acts ever. Mt Eerie - Live in Bloomington LP (XRA) "Live in Bloomington, September 30th, 2011" is a collection of Phil Elverum's songs spanning from "It Was Hot We Stayed In The Water" all the way through "Clear Moon", each one passing through the same stylistic filter that brought us "Through The Trees" or "Between Two Mysteries'" 'Twin Peaks' nod. Add to that the intimacy and energy of a live concert experience, masterfully recorded by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording. It also serves as a high quality portrait of what the Mount Eerie live experience was like in 2011 and is one more pinhole into the ever-varied creative mind and genius of Phil Elverum. Part Time - PDA (Mexican Summer) Part Time's sophomoric effort PDA picks up from where 2011's What Would You Say? debut left us: starry-eyed, sugar-rushed, and eager for another night drive. David Speck, thecreative mind behind the project has an undeniable ear forwriting pop songs that feel steeped in a perpetual state ofteenage romance. Each track on PDA boasts a timeless, strangely familiar melody - cushioned by achingly perfect chord progressions that fall precisely into place, and all produced in a style befitting of its playfully referential nature. Thundercat - Apocalypse (Brainfeeder) As Thundercat, Bruner takes his Jazz roots and works with a mix of artists that suit his wildly experimental sensibilities. Thundercat teamed up with executive producer Flying Lotus once again, to form a profound body of work for his second album, Apocalypse, The album straddles lines and pushes genres further, blurring the confines of Pop, Funk, Electronica and Prog Rock, and creating something else entirely. Both vulnerable and fearless, a comedy and tragedy, Apocalypse is an intimate portrait of an artist who will continue to take music to a new place; the beyond. Anna Von Hausswolff - Ceremony (Other Music) When you put on Anna Von Hausswolf's second album, Ceremony, everything around you changes - that's its first surprise. That ability to be instantly distinct is the mark of any great record; it's a vibe, and here that vibe is dramatic and stark and, as Ceremony progresses, surprising. A large part of Ceremony's charm - beyond the thoughtful songwriting - lies in the presence of a pipe organ, an unusual sound in popular music. Von Hausswolf used the one at a church in Gothenburg where she recorded Ceremony, and it's that organ drone which also connects the singer with her love of noise and black metal music. Von Hausswolff's voice possesses the power to soar with those mighty pipes and still hold tight to delicate, personal emotions.
