New Arrivals for July 16th .................................................. Sara Bareilles - The Blessed Unrest (Epic) Back in September, a friend introduced me to Jack Antonoff from the band Fun. and I suddenly realized how easy and inspiring co-writing can be. Our very first session produced the song "Brave" which would then become the lead single off this body of work and a song I am infinitely proud of. That session sparked a string of amazing communions with other collaborators, and I have ended up with a collection of songs that feel as much like me as anything I've ever done. This record makes me feel vulnerable and exposed, and it feels right. I am consciously taking risks and feeling myself develop as an artist and a human being. - SB Court Yard Hounds - Amelita (Columbia) Containing 11 new tracks, Robison and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison's divorce. "I've been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things," says Emily Robison. "Now, I've opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world." The new direction is apparent on title track which has a breezy south-of-the-border sound, or "Phoebe," which calls in a frenetic, anxious melody, and chillingly close harmonies. Lead single, "Sunshine" oozes with irony as the girls flash their carefully manicured claws through silken harmonies. Ashley Eriksson - Colours (K) Ashley Eriksson (darling to many for her work with LAKE) has achieved a status few artists ever know: her song "Island Song" can be hummed by almost any teenager in the United States (a surprising discovery she made while teaching Portland's Rock Camp for Girls last summer). Used as the closing theme for Cartoon Network's cult sensation Adventure Time, "Island Song" has over a million views on Youtube and has generated dozens of cover videos, making Ashley Eriksson the equivalent of a "household name" to the youth of America. Gauntlet Hair - Stills (Dead Oceans) For all the dark tones pulsing through Gauntlet Hair's 2013 album Stills, there is also a guileless affection for the goth industrialists and post-punks who blazed a shadowy path through the 80s and 90s. Recorded during Portland, Oregon's grey winter days in producer Jacob Portrait's (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) appropriately named studio The Cave, Stills is a modern salute to Trent Reznor and his cohort's arena-ready post-apocalyptica. Mayer Hawthorne - Where Does This Door Go (Republic) Mayer Hawthorne draws influence from the music of Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, Barry White, Smokey Robinson and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Holland/Dozier/Holland. Taking umbrage at the notion that his is a purely "throwback" Soul sound, however, Hawthorne also cites more contemporary artists, such as J Dilla, as significant influences. Andy Kaufman - Andy and His Grandmother (Drag City) Andy & His Grandmother is material never heard before, a skimming from 82 hours of microcassette tapes that Andy recorded during 1977-79. Andy regarded the microtape recorder as a fantastic new way of capturing his hoaxing, and carried it with him everywhere, for use at any given moment. Real life was the ultimate frontier for him, and these tapes demonstrate the heart of Andy's comedy. David Lynch - The Big Dream (Sacred Bones) Describing his style of music as "modern blues," Lynch says, "most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and then we go sideways from there. What comes out is a hybrid, modernized form of low-down blues." As you would expect from an accomplished film director, the songs are cinematic in scope. Lynch uses his reverb-drenched guitar and processed voice to summon primal moods and melodies that color a strange world populated by character archetypes familiar to fans of his films: the irresistible femme fatale, the tender romantic, the smooth psychopath, and the quirky oddball. While Lynch touches on modern electronic production and classically dreamy material, the album always manages to keep one foot rooted in the blues, a style of music he loves. 2LP comes with a bonus 7" featuring Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li. Tig Notaro - Live (Secretly Canadian) Live was recorded, uh, live at Largo on August 3rd, 2012 at her monthly show, "Tig Has Friends." The day before this set, Tig was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts. This news was the bookend to an agonizing year in which Tig spent weeks in the hospital battling an intestinal bacteria infection. A week after being released from the hospital, her mother unexpectedly died. Then, in the middle of it all, her relationship fell apart. Which leads us here. Tig's 30 minute set is not much more than an open-mic set in that it's half scripted, raw and real. "In 27 years doing this, I've seen a handful of truly great, masterful standup sets. One was Tig Notaro last night at Largo." - Louis C.K. Pet Shop Boys - Electric (X2) Electric features 8 new Pet Shop Boys songs, plus a cover of Bruce Springsteen's anti-war track "Last to Die." Stuart Price, best known for his work with Madonna and The Killers, produced the album, which band members Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe call "banging." "Electric is very much set on the dance floor," they said in a statement. "The album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas Elysium had a reflective mood, Electric is pretty banging!" Producer Stuart Price said the album's sound was developed via "various techniques between old school synth and drum machine programming and new school computer mangling." "Thursday" features British rapper Example. Soft Metals - Lenses (Captured Tracks) Soft Metals formed after Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall met at a DJ night and connected over their obsession with analog synthesizers and the shadowy, sultry, untamed expressions of underground electronic music. Their early collaborations paired Patricia's delicate vocals and introspective lyrics with Ian's solo sketches. Soon they moved on to writing music together, building songs from wild, improvised sessions in Ian's home studio. Their genre blurring brand of voltaic pop draws inspiration from a spectrum of sources including krautrock, synth wave, and techno. They've won over audiences in situations as varied as experimental noise shows in dingy basements, to sleek, modern nightclubs, to clandestine after hours warehouse parties, to dimly lit dives where post punk and synthpop records fuel the dance floor. Yamantaka / Sonic Titan - YT//ST (Suicide Squeeze) Founded in late 2007 by performance artists Alaska B and Ruby Kato Attwood, born from the ashes of the late Lesbian Fight Club. Armed with mixed-race identities, mad illustration skills and a whole pile of home-brew junk electronics, alaska and Ruby wrote and performed the first mini 'Noh-Wave' in April 2008. Aesthetically, they blend the poorly appropriated styles of Noh, Chinese Opera, Chinese, Japanese and First Nations Mythology, Black & White TV, Psych & Rock Operatics into a sensory feast of nigh-monochromatic costuming, unique hand-built musical instruments and their own manga-esque cardboard 'Neverflat' style of 2.5D set design.
