New Arrivals for July 23rd .................................................. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - s/t (Vagrant) If you sought comparisons for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros forthcoming self-titled album, you would hear the soulfulness of The Supremes' Where Did Our Love Go", the raw exuberant pop of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" and the psychedelic echoes of Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow album. But at its roots, the album shows a band evolved and hopeful for the future. Some tracks from this new release were originally recorded as the bookend piece to their sophomore album, Here, but in their last year of touring, this collection of songs was reimagined, taking on their own shape. They are upbeat, boisterous and passionate, with gospel chorus harmonies, raw, wailing vocals, and deep-in-the-pocket rhythms. Ghostface Killah - The Brown Tape (Soul Temple) Ghostface Killah's collaborative concept album with producer/composter Adrian Younge has been hailed as one of the best rap albums of the year. As part of a "Record Store Day" promotion in April, Soul Temple released a limited edition cassette tape which was an alternate mix of the album produced by Detroit's Apollo Brown. Due to popular demand from Ghostface's rabid fanbase, we are now making "The Brown Tape" available on CD. Gogol Bordello - Pura Vida Conspiracy (ATO) Gogol Bordello has spent the last decade getting down with that energy through their meteoric live shows and has earned a solid reputation as "the hottest global touring act to come out of New York (Billboard)" and "the world's most riotous live band (Rolling Stone)." Their wildly energetic live shows are celebrated by fans worldwide and have brought them to nearly every corner of the globe and to the main stage of festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Rock am Ring, Reading and Leeds to name just a few. Half Moon Run - Dark Eyes (Glassnote) Half Moon Run is a talented young trio from Ottawa, Ontario and Comox , British Columbia. It was in a practice studio situated in Montreal's Mile-End District, through the hardships of time constraints and flatlined bank accounts, that the trio bonded and created their unique sound, fusing together the restless elements of indie, pop and folk with beautiful rhythmic harmonies, delicate guitar lines and a hint of war electronica. Honey Ltd - Complete LHI Recordings (LITA) Lee Hazlewood's label only put out interesting albums. Yet despite the psychedelic cowboy's success with Nancy Sinatra, being on Lee Hazlewood Industries was no fast-track to success. Gorgeous and talented Detroit girl group Honey Ltd had all the makings of a hit band, yet they disappeared after releasing just one album in 1968. This presents everything the group ever recorded. Fans of The Ronettes, Shangri-Las and Pentangle are in for a treat - Honey Ltd's music blended social commentary with harmony-drenched, psych-soul pop. Hunx & his Punx - Street Punk (Hardly Art) Hunx has returned with an album filled with the catchiest and most hateful punk songs heard in eons. Street Punk is an unrelenting tour de force, echoing early 80s hardcore, 90s grrl sounds, Darby Crash on helium, and the female answer to Danzig era Misfits. Street Punk is the follow up to 2011's Too Young To Be in Love. Recorded by Facundo Bermudez in a couple of days, all songs feature Hunx and Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams, plus Erin Emslie on drums. Street Punk features songs about bad skin, teen angst, social wimpery, plus a Beastie Boys cover! Love Language - Ruby Red (Merge) Friends and fans of The Love Language songwriter and frontman Stuart McLamb have learned to expect a lot, but rarely in a timely manner. Completing a triumvirate of spiritual transmissions spent lost (2009's The Love Language) and found (2010's Libraries), 2013's Ruby Red exorcises the transient brilliance fostered by McLamb within the sheetrock walls of the album's namesake artist space. Mean Lady - Love Now (Fat Possum) Mean Lady is the duo of Katie Dill and Sam Nobles. They are from Delaware and they're both so nice it's kinda creepy. Really, really nice. They wrote a bunch of songs about lust and innocence and vulnerability - they are all coming out in July on Fat Possum Records as an album called "Love Now." Through bubbly synths and rhythmic production, Dill and Nobles managed to cobble together a timeless, concise pop record. It's a finished product that could only exist when kids from Delaware grew up, trash all their soul records and then got high some time after DJ Shadow started to suck but probably before J Dilla died. Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas (reissue) (Merge) The last of the "all-home-recordings albums" by the Mountain Goats and the only one about which that claim is true, All Hail West Texas was originally released as a free-standing compact disc on the late, lamented Emperor Jones about a decade ago. The songs were originally transferred from the cassettes onto which they were recorded to 1/2" reels at Tiny Telephone by Alex Newport. Remastered from those reels, along with 7 unearthed songs from the two surviving contemporaneous cassettes, All Hail West Texas stands as the peak of the Mountain Goats' home recording era. Jackson Scott - Melbourne (Fat Possum) Jackson Scott has developed out of a weird audacity; bending spoons with apocalyptic melodies, sugared with solipsistic textures. How did the world conceive this young cosmonaut? A college dropout with a 4-track and a one-track mind. A listener and a conceiver. His voice, whether pitched up or androgynous, speaks of a still life. But painted is meaningless, songs irrelevant, aura outdated if you're a revivalist. Jackson is not. The upcoming debut Melbourne shows we're all along together, sharing the same tragedies, ecstasies and phenomenon. He conspired it out of isolation, deprivation and hunger....you can't survive on candy. A trio that is liquidating the senses, seeking the perfect elixir, channeling kraut, punk, surf and pop as one psych rock solvent. Playing at The Bishop on 9/12! Truth & Salvage Co. - Pick Me Up (Megaforce) The sincerity of their song writing and their passionate performance were the things that attracted me to their project. - Chris Robinson, The Black Crowes. Every so often you come across a band whose music sort of reaches out and shakes hands with your soul. That's just what the music of LA's Truth & Salvage Co. did to me. - Country Music Pride U-God - Keynote Speaker (Soul Temple) The Keynote Speaker is the all new solo album from Wu-Tang Clan founding member U-God, his first release for The RZA's Soul Temple imprint (The Man With The Iron Fists Soundtrack, Ghostface Killah's critically acclaimed Twelve Reasons To Die both of which features appearances by U-God). This is the gritty street-level hip hop album U-God fans have longed to hear. Weekend - Jinx (Slumberland) Weekend's second full-length album has been a long time coming. Intense, dark post-punk marked by crepuscular atmospherics, muscular rhythms and surprisingly melodic song-writing. Weekend relocated cross-country to the already heavily saturated Brooklyn music scene. The trio had collectively grown weary of the trappings of home. Durkan states, "Feeling at home is evidence of stagnation and so I'm happy to say New York still feels alien to me." Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ..................................................
