New instore performance announced! Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records, member of Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic, Hive Dwellers and many more- will be playing an intimate instore performance at Landlocked Music on Wednesday September 11th. This will be his only performance in Bloomington on this tour. More details TBA but for sure save the date for this one! New Arrivals for July 30th .................................................. Cooked Books - The Reader (Let's Pretend) The debut album from a Bloomington, IN band born through a Craigslist ad titled "garage/psych/loud," which intermingles the driving energy of classic '70s punk with the sonic exploration of '60s bad acid psych. Maintaining a pop familiarity through even the darkest and heaviest songs, The Reader is the perfect soundtrack to that point in the day when you've decided to pour yourself another cup of coffee after you've already started a beer. (300 pressed on white vinyl!) The Dentists - Some People Are On The Pitch They Think It's All Over It Is Now LP (Trouble in Mind) The Dentists emerged from the infamous "Medway" scene that had already spawned The Prisoners & Billy Childish's band, The Milkshakes - whose raw sound & stage craft played a crucial role in molding the band's ferocity. The Dentists set themselves apart early on, not content with only drawing upon the 60s for inspiration, they looked to current bands like The Smiths & R.E.M. as kindred songwriting spirits, but as guitarist Bob Collins says; "we thought they were getting the sound all wrong". They fused the aggression of British post-punk with the burgeoning jangle of the 80s underground scene & the band's core, paisley-tinted influences of The Beatles, Love & The Byrds. Lovingly remastered from the original tapes and pressed onto 150g vinyl (the first 500 copies pressed on translucent blue vinyl). Michael Franti - All People (Capitol) Eighth album from one of the most respected, socially active artists in music. Franti's impressive career spans decades, albums and many achievements. The singer, poet and activist has amassed an extensive and rabid fanbase, and draws sell-out crowds by virtue of his electrifying live shows. Michael Franti is recognized as a pioneering force in using music as a vehicle for social activism. In the mid-'80s, Franti formed Spearhead following his punk band The Beatnigs and the hip hop-inflected The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Buddy Guy - Rhythm & Blues (RCA) Produced by Grammy Award winning producer/songwriter and longtime collaborator Tom Hambridge, Rhythm & Blues captures the 76 year-young Guy at the peak of his creativity with an impressive list of guest stars. Replete with heartfelt vocals, straightforward lyrics and mesmerizing guitar licks, Rhythm & Blues not only exemplifies how blues continues to be the foundation of all genres of today's music, it also illustrates why Guy has been influential in the careers of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more. The Rhythm disc includes rhythm and blues-style blues with deep grooves, such as the Junior Wells' 1960 hit "Messin' With The Kid". The Blues disc taps into the genre's rich history with "Meet Me In Chicago," "I Could Die Happy," "Never Gonna Change" and "All That Makes Me Happy Is The Blues." Hiatus Kaiyote - Tawk Tomahawk (Masterworks) Hiatus Kaiyote jumped out of Melbourne, Australia, in 2011 and hit the ground running hard. It has earned breathless praise from multiple, seemingly incongruous points of the musical compass. Its future soul and jazz leanings have Gilles Peterson, Questlove and Erykah Badu on swoon mode. But the group's flirtations with electronic beatcraft as well as indie-pop make its music as difficult to explain as its name. And with a name like Nai Palm, and vocals that are alternately operatic, warbling and cooing, its lead vocalist makes you focus on the band's deliciously confounding approach to making truly unique music. Kendra Morris - Mockingbird (Wax Poetics) When promoting Kendra Morris's debut album, Banshee, Wax Poetics Records released promo-only covers of famous songs like Chris Isaak's Wicked Game. Before they knew it, two songs touched two very difference audiences and went viral: Metallica's Ride The Lightning and Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Deciding to release the tracks properly on a full album of only covers, Morris and producer Jeremy Page added some soul songs (like the Stax Records classic 'As Long as I've Got You' by the Charmels, and Walk On By), many more Classic tunes ('Miss You' by the Stones, 'Space Oddity' by Bowie, and 'Walk on the Wild Side' by Lou Reed), and even some more current hits ('Karma Police' by Radiohead). T Hardy Morris - Audition Tapes (Dangerbird) Georgia native musician T. Morris Hardy - best known as frontman for Southern psych-rockers Dead Confederate as well as a member of the collaborative supergroup Diamond Rugs. The sessions behind Audition Tapes came to be with the help of a variety of Morris' talented circle of friends who dropped by to lend a hand, including Delta Spirit's Matt Vasquez, Black Lips guitarist Ian Saint Pe, and drummer Julian Dorio (The Whigs). Audition Tapes finds Morris abundantly inspired, oftentimes invoking the grand spirits of Elliot Smtih, Alex Chilton or fellow Georgian Vic Chesnutt. On some tracks, listeners are treated to intimate, fragile performances, so informal that we are invited to hear creaks and count-offs, finger taps on guitar strings and other warm and extraneous studio noise. Volto - Incitare (Fantasy) Volto! delivers a hypnotic mix of experimental jazz, rock, fusion, prog and blues. Their self-produced album, Incitare, features 9 original instrumental pieces, recorded and mixed by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Bad Religion, Weezer, Melvins) at Tool's Loft Studio. Volto!'s radical fusion is impossible to classify. Guitarist John Ziegler cites influences such as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, but the band clearly draws heavily from the art rock, tribal, space jazz, metal genres. The music is rhythmic, driving and magnetic, thanks to the expert play of group members Danny Carey (drums), Lance Morrison (bass) and Jeff Babko (keys). The album's artwork features a piece from Danny's art collection by the famous underground, psychedelic artist Rick Griffin, designed together with art contributions by Tool guitarist Adam Jones.
