This will be his only performance in Bloomington on this tour. Save the date for this one! New Arrivals for August 20th .................................................. Julianna Barwick - Nepenthe (Dead Oceans) For the supremely laid back, Julianna has returned with another wonderful collection of ambient pieces out on Dead Oceans entitled Nepenthe. Like her previous releases, Nepenthe combines Barwick's gorgeously looped voice and delicate piano melodies into a swelling, heavenly wall of sound that recalls the more vocal side of Brian Eno's ambient work. Nepenthe is the most fully formed of any of Barwick's releases and includes perhaps the first appearance of discernible vocals from the Brooklyn native, but lyrics or not, the music on Nepenthe is too soothing to get tangled up in things as silly as words. Crocodiles - Crimes of Passion (Frenchkiss) Crimes Of Passion kicks off with I Like It In The Dark, which could be their best to date; a joyous hymn to atheism and closes with the aching beauty of Un Chant D Amour, a simple and direct ode to heartbreak. These songs bookmark an album bursting with sounds inspired by the likes of the Soft Boys, Street Hassle era Lou Reed, the Notorious Byrd Brothers, the Jackson 5 and even Glenn Branca. It is a sadly accepted impression that life is cooler in song, on screen, in art, or in poetry, but it is far superior when the creative process is fed back into real life and an album like Crimes Of Passion is born. Diana - Perpetual Surrender (Jagjaguwar) Diana are an enigmatic foursome from Toronto. Consisting of Joseph Shabason, Kieran and singer Carmen Elle, with Paul Mathew recently joining the live line up, Shabason and Adams met while studying jazz at music college where they played extensively together. Having lent their skills (sax & drums, respectively) to many bands, including Bonjay, Hidden Cameras and Shabason's recent contributions to Destroyer's excellent Kaputt, it was a leap of faith to make their own full-length. Golden Suits - s/t (Yep Roc) Golden Suits is the first solo project of Fred Nicolaus from the band Department of Eagles. After co-writing many of the group's best known songs, Nicolaus was inspired to write a solo album. Musically, the songs follow the thread of Department of Eagles' swervy take on classic pop in the vein of Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks, Paul Simon, and Lennon and McCartney solo albums. Julia Holter - Loud City Song (Domino) Julia Holter has returned with another marvelous collection of songs that blend disparate sounds together in moving and unsettling ways. Loud City Song features perhaps the most crisp production yet for Holter, her haunting voice piercing through waves of buried synthesizers and robotic drum machines. The question of what sounds are real and which are synthetic plays out subtly, giving the listener time to absorb how hypnotic Holter's songwriting style is. Willy Mason - Carry On (Communion) "Willy Mason is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation" - Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons, Co-Founder of Communion Records). "Mason's songs draw on decades of brilliant American music, but it's the new, wide-open vistas he points towards that makes this album so compelling." - NME. Free tote bag w/ purchase! Coming to the Bluebird later this fall with the Communion Tour! John Mayer - Paradise Valley (Columbia) Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician John Mayer returns with his new album Paradise Valley, which he produced with longtime collaborator Don Was. The first single is the track Paper Doll. This LP coincides with John's first US tour in 3 yrs. No Age - An Object (Sub Pop) No Age's 4th LP is hummable, political, recognizably rooted in underground rock, and informed by an aesthetic in which the relationships between guitar, percussion, and vocals become relationships between things. Again working with Grammy-nominated designer Brian Roettinger, the band prepared and assembled the physical packaging of An Object, fusing the roles of manufacturer, artist, and musician. Playing at the Waldron on 9/15! Free Beach Ball and/or poster while they last! Pure Bathing Culture - Moon Tides (Partisan) It's a rare and beautiful thing when a band emerges fully formed. Building off their past experiences as musical collaborators, in a short time the duo have created a sound that is undeniably their own: soaring synths, chiming keyboards, and shimmering electric guitars move in lockstep with bouncing drum machines. It's a sound that looks back momentarily for inspiration - Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout, Cocteau Twins - but then fixes its gaze firmly on the present. Ty Segall - Sleeper (Drag City) Five short years into Ty, we're farther and farther out with each and every record. Between two minds, between two places, beyond Twins, Sleeper envisions a world of haves and have-nots, but the currency that separates them is psychic. With Sleeper, Ty Segall explores your mind, coming through his own head to slip inside with thought sharing. Ty engineered this one from beginning to end, and his ultimate sonics were accessed with a freaky hand and an instinct for what makes something perfect. Sleeper flows more colors than ever before through your mind's eye, pushing the walls of the universe out just a micron further, making everything heavier and lighter all at once, to allow for one moment that will live forever. Still Life Still - Mourning Trance (Arts & Crafts) Together since grade school, Still Life Still are as much a family as a band. And during the writing of Mourning Trance, three members of that extended family - including both of Young's parents - passed away. So Mourning Trance became about loss and family, but also about coping and finding a way to enjoy life through all of the exhaustion. It's an album about waking up every morning, working 8 hours, and still finding a way to celebrate surviving another day. In their case, that way was the only one the band knows - writing and playing music with best friends. The end result of that process is a weird, beautiful pop record, inspired by, and in honour of the brilliance and absurdity of real life. Those bittersweet experiences continue to be what drives the band and record. Superchunk - I Hate Music (Merge) I Hate Music is Majesty's dark twin. It's similarly aggressive often moreso and every bit as energetic. It reflects the joys of a life spent immersed in music, but there's a dark undercurrent as well. That title isn't tongue-in-cheek, but it's really more a question than a statement: When you're 20, lazy co-workers and romantic missteps number among your biggest worries; two decades later, life's bigger questions knock louder and louder, demanding answers. Lots of free buttons available! Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind (Sony) Made Up Mind features "Part of Me," a song driven by a classic southern soul groove straight out of Muscle Shoals. Throughout the course of the album it becomes increasingly apparent that Susan Tedeschi has evolved into one of the most dauntingly commanding vocalists in contemporary music, her serious lung power exploding and just as convincingly digging into the core of poignant, tender ballads. Derek Trucks has indisputably matured into one of the finest guitarists of our time, tearing up barnburners with his masterful slide and lead lines while showcasing his easier, more subtle touch on the blues. Although they bear the names of its co-leaders, each member of this 11-piece juggernaut contributes equally, there are no weak links in this true group achievement. Travis - Where You Stand (Red Telephone Box) Travis return after a 5 year break with their 7th album. Sounding and looking more invigorated than ever, the band has delivered an album of effortless, melodic Pop gems produced by 'Super Swede' Michael Ilbert (Hives/Cardigans). Written and recorded across London, Norway, New York, and taking in a production stint at Berlin's legendary Hansa Studios, the band recorded the songs on the same sound deck that produced both OK Computer and their own breakthrough album The Man Who. Deluxe edition includes 2 bonus tracks plus a bonus DVD containing a documentary on the making of. Free posters with purchase! TV Mike and the Scarecrowes - Weeks to Days (self) Ex-pats TV Mike and the Scarecrows are outsiders with insight. With one foot in the same Bay Area bayou that the Fogerty brothers once walked and the other foot in, well, the same Bay Area bayou that birthed The Dead, these mostly-Hoosier transplants have been known to make a stir from Mendocino to the San Joaquin to every honky-tonk and hipster bar in between. With Swagger to spare they steer a course between Beachwood Sparks' cosmic-country and the more trad. bluegrass leanings of The Avett Brothers, both with whom they have shared stages. Playing Upland's Hillbilly Haiku on Aug 30th w/ Houndmouth and Jason Wilber! Zola Jesus / JG Thirlwell - Versions (Sacred Bones) Nika Roza Danilova was offered an opportunity to perform at NY's Guggenheim. Rather than doing her standard electronic set she decided she wanted to work with a classical composer who could arrange her songs for a quartet. She recruited legendary industrial pioneer JG Thirlwell (Foetus) to do the arrangements. If there is a common thread to Thirlwell's varied musical styles, it is dramatic intensity and evocative, cinematic quality. Thirlwell's breadth of experience in experimental and classical music makes him the perfect collaborator to help realize her vision. Removing the bulk of electronics from these songs gives them the space to breath, thusly opening them up to be received by a much wider audience who perhaps don't normally venture into the techno-pop/ industrial arena.
