Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records, member of Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic, Hive Dwellers and many more- will be serenading us with an intimate acoustic performance at 5PM at Landlocked Music on Wednesday, September 11th. This will be his only performance in Bloomington on this tour. Opening will be a quickie set from local Chad Serhal, too. Save the date for this one! New Arrivals for September 3rd .................................................. Bastille - Bad Blood (Virgin) Bastille purveys in what might be best described as "apocalyptic pop". Though Bad Blood, the band's major label debut, operates within the safe realms of verse-chorus structure, everything is amped up to 11, creating a sense of urgency that makes what could have been a collection of ordinary electronic indie pop sound like a battle cry for the end times. Booming male choirs, string effects, echoey pianos, allusions to Greek mythology and the Bible-Bastille brings out all the artillery on Bad Blood. Richard Buckner - Surrounded (Merge) In the time since Our Blood was released and after a few long tours, Richard Buckner attempted to work on writing short stories but found himself drawn back into the music room. The evidence of his time in the writer's chair is clear in the dense, lovely prose of Surrounded. The album's liner notes include text-embedded lyrics, a technique Buckner employed on his earlier albums Since and Impasse, but this marks the first time he used the songs' extended story to construct the album's overall view and track sequence. Califone - Stitches (Dead Oceans) Stitches touches on all permutable definitions of the word, its episodes of discomfort and healing rendered with exquisite beauty and craftsmanship. Archetypes and mythological figures rub shoulders with bruised civilians throughout this odyssey. Intimate timbres garage sale drum machines, slack guitar strings, hushed vocals offset the album's cinematic inclinations. The listener moves through a landscape of Old Testament blood and guts, spaghetti Western deserts and Southwestern horizons, zeroing in on emotions and images that cannot be glanced over. Neko Case - The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (Anti) Neko's most precise, urgent record to date, marked by a melodic immediacy, a loving embrace of the big rock gesture, and a lyrical frankness. The perfect culmination of Neko's trajectory so far the pop, folk and country influences, the fluid craft of her band, and that soaring voice, blended seamlessly into the album her legions of fans have been waiting for. Deluxe CD includes 3 bonus tracks. Deluxe gatefold 2xLP includes 3 Bonus tracks and Side D of LP with etching and tattoo sheet. Celestial Shore - 10x (Hometapes) Celestial Shore is Brooklyn-based trio, the guys originally from NC, Cali, and New England. They all met at Berklee College of Music (and they all left it behind). In nine songs, they deconstruct city life, the history of pop music, and their own jazz educations into something both heart-breakingly raw and mystically timeless. Glasvegas - Later When The TV Turns To Static (BMG) Written and self-produced by lead vocalist and songwriter James Allan, this 10 track sojourn of heartfelt melancholia and broken relationships is set against a backdrop of scorching soundscapes that lift the soul into heights of abandoned euphoria. There is no doubt! Glasvegas have come home; turned their eyes from the blinding light back into the shadows, where reality lies. Holograms - Forever (Captured Tracks) As you might be able to tell from the cover of their second album, Forever, Holograms are not messing around. The Swedish band are a lot like the gnarly William Bouguereau painting which adorns it- a swift knee full of synth-rock into your lower back, a big old handful of hair and post-punk, and a huge bite of melodic energy to the throat. Holograms have often been likened to fellow Scandinavian punks, Iceage, but comparisons could be easily be made to Wire or even Joy Division. King Khan & the Shrines - Idle No More (Merge) Idle No More is full of sweat-drenched, ass-shaking, groovy, psyched-out numbers complete with rip-roaring horn lines, southern-fried guitar riffs, and lysergic melodies. Imagine Roky Erickson backed by the Sun Ra Arkestra or Wilson Pickett and The Velvet Underground, or picture the love child of Anubis and Kali. King Khan & The Shrines are more than a psychedelic soul band with a spectacle of a stage show they are a cult musical phenomenon and simply one of the most entertaining groups the world has seen and heard since the days of Ike and Tina. Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks (Columbia) Hesitation Marks is the new full-length album from Nine Inch Nails. Recorded in secret over the last year, Trent Reznor teamed with producers Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder to create the first new music from Nine Inch Nails in five years. Includes lead single "Came Back Haunted." Deluxe Edition CD includes 14 tracks plus a bonus CD with 3 remixes and is accompanied by a 28 page hardcover book. Vinyl edition is pressed on two black 180 gram LPs housed in a gatefold jacket and includes a CD insert of the album. North Mississippi Allstars - World Boogie Is Coming (Songs of the South) They produced it themselves at their own Zebra Ranch Studios in Coldwater, MS, aside from a day in the studio with Robert Plant (and his harmonica) at Memphis' legendary Royal Studios. The Dickinson Brothers did it with the help of long-time friends, Lightnin Malcolm, Duwayne and Garry Burnside, Kenny Brown, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Sharde Thomas, Chris Chew, Sid and Steve Selvidge, Plant and others. World Boogie is the record that perfectly ties it all together, fusing the elements that have made them special while pushing the band's sound further into the future than ever before. Okkervil River - The Silver Gymnasium (ATO) Okkervil River's 7th album, The Silver Gymnasium takes place in 1986 in a small town in New Hampshire where Will Sheff grew up. This is a special album for the band as it is Will's first autobiographical record, as well as first for their new label ATO. The album was produced by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., John Mellencamp). Volcano Choir - Repave (Jagjaguwar) Volcano Choir started as a collaboration between Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Collections of Colonies of Bees. Repave comes four years after the first Volcano Choir album, Unmap, provided a glimpse into the collaborative mindset between a singer and a band that inspired him. Ideas were minted, written at a distance and realized in the studio; edges sanded back and flaps tucked in, the craftsmanship of the endeavor bearing evidence of the craft itself, and the technology used to assemble it. Playing in Indy on 9/7 at the Vogue! Chelsea Wolfe - Pain Is Beauty (Sargent House) Where the sparse arrangements of her 2012 acoustic album spotlighted the incremental fluctuations of her voice, Chelsea's new album feels like a more wide-angled affair, folding her soprano into swaths of strings and pulsating synths until the result feels as a vast and intimidating as the wild expanses of land and water she's singing about. Wolfe has called the album her "love-letter to nature," and while the switch to a more electronic palette would seem to contradict this mission statement, the repetitive, melodically cyclical choruses grow with the awe-inspiring momentum of a real-life tornado.
