Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records, member of Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic, Hive Dwellers and many more- will be serenading us with an intimate acoustic performance at 5PM at Landlocked Music on Wednesday, September 11th. This will be his only performance in Bloomington on this tour. Opening will be a quickie set from local Chad Serhal, too. Save the date for this one! New Arrivals for September 10th .................................................. Arctic Monkeys - AM (Domino) Arctic Monkeys release their fifth album, entitled AM. AM was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Orton at Sage & Sound Recording, LA and Rancho De La Luna, Joshua Tree. The album was engineered by Ian Shea and mixed by Tchad Blake. Josh Homme, Pete Thomas and Bill Ryder-Jones all make guest appearances on AM as do the words of John Cooper Clarke, on the track "I Wanna Be Yours." Balance & Composure - Thing We Think We're Missing (No Sleep) A sonic assault melding influences such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Neutral Milk Hotel and Nirvana, their 2011, critically heralded debut album, Separation, adhered to the band's namesake. A cohesive listen of anthemic and melodic guitar blitzes with poignant lyricism, rhythmic thrusts and an abrasive pop knack in its overall deliverance, Separation helped establish Balance and Composure as one of underground rock's most promising newcomers. Willis Earl Beal - Nobody Knows (XL) Depending on what state of mind you find him in, Willis Earl Beal will tell you that Nobody Knows is his debut album or the natural follow up to Acousmatic Sorcery. While Acousmatic Sorcery was recorded on a karaoke machine, using found instruments, it worked as a raw, no-fi introduction to Beal's life as a songwriter and true outsider artist from Chicago, IL, but did little to display the power and natural beauty of the voice he used onstage. Nobody Knows aims to deliver on the promise of his live show. Body/Head (Kim Gordon + Bill Nace) - Coming Apart (Matador) Body/Head are an electric guitar duo comprised of Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) The pair began working together in various loose formats years ago, but the Body/Head concept evolved more specifically in early 2012. Delorean - Apar (True Panther) Apar is Delorean's follow up to 2010's Subiza which brought the band world-wide critical acclaim. The New York Times said, "Delorean traffics in airy atmospherics and enveloping rhythm: ideally, music for a dance floor in the hours preceding dawn" and Filter described the debut as "a compelling balance between Spanish discotheque, indie rock know-how, and sparkling synth arrangements - eight tracks of blissful synth-pop about the emotional extremes of love." JD Eicher & the Goodnights - Into Place (Rock Ridge) JD Eicher's pop-rock songcraft has garnered comparisons to Coldplay, The Script, The Killers, and Death Cab for Cutie. The Pittsburgh quartet has received impressive acclaim, from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Uniontown, PA Herald-Standard, Pittsburgh City Paper, and The Erie Times-News. Nationally, Alternative Addiction named them one of the top 10 unsigned bands. The quartet's third album, Into Place is adventurous, assured, and tastefully layered with soulful sections. Piers Faccini - Between Dogs and Wolves (Six Degrees) Melodies and words are in Faccini’s bones and his finely crafted songs resonate with traces of his ancestry. If his songs were maps they would stretch from the English moors to the Saharan dunes via the parched plains of the Mediterrannean before spanning the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Mississippi Delta. Jacuzzi Boys - s/t (Hardly Art) Miami's always colorful, never dull, Jacuzzi Boys have created another sonic masterpiece to add to their astonishing catalogue of pop, glam, double-hubble rock! Opener "Be My Prism" pops and sizzles while tracks like "Double Vision," "Dust," and "Domino Moon" excite the night until you see the sunlight. "Black Gloves" provides a cool bedroom breeze while flowers melt when they hear the goregeous album stand out "Heavy Horse." Man Man - On Oni Pond (Anti) On Oni Pond features an arresting reconstruction of the band's visionary sound stripped to its core and rebuilt as something new and compelling yet still very much Man Man. An intensive collaboration between the band's frontman, Honus Honus, and drummer Pow Pow, who has assumed a new-found prominence in the songwriting process, On Oni Pond brings an exhilarating array of new rhythmic ideas to the mix. The compositions were further honed by the band members along with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) into a compelling mash-up of Fear Of Music era Talking Heads, classic soul, psychedelia, hip hop, and 50's rock and roll. With its imaginative yet spare rhythms, huge hooks, and overriding sense of urgency, On Oni Pond melds these seemingly disparate influences into an unexpectedly lush, melodic album, exquisitely consolidated by the band's unique and affecting vision. Janelle Monae - Electric Lady (Bad Boy) From the sound of The Electric Lady, ish is an urgent and dangerous form of dance music, rebel music that forces one to fight, jam, and fall in love. Like on The ArchAndroid, the sonic textures of the album are varied, and the past and present come together to explode and create a mind-blowing future for pop and soul music. For example, wondrous strings reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield and Bernard Herrmann orchestrations abound, Hendrixian guitar solos soar, Outkast-like raps float over punk rock riffs; defiant socially conscious lyrics extol the virtues of soul-searching and fighting for change, while the funk simply melts your speakers: 808s boom and Prince-like synthesizers squiggle in your earhole, making it veritably impossible to just sit still. Obits - Bed & Bugs (Sub Pop) Bed & Bugs is the third album by Brooklyn, NY garage-punkers Obits. Bed & Bugs was recorded somewhere in Arlington, VA at an unnamed recording studio, simply and rather unhelpfully described as "upstairs." It was recorded by Nikhil Ranade, with additional mixing by Eli Janney and Geoff Sanoff. On listening to Bed & Bugs, the discerning listener may well note more than a passing similarity to such bands as Hot Snakes, Edsel, Drive Like Jehu, Girls Against Boys, Pitchfork, possibly Television or the Wipers. With the exception of those last two, Obits share members with all of those bands. The Stepkids - Troubadour (Stones Throw) Carefully crafting their own brand of modern music by blending classic Jazz, R&B, Funk, 70s Pop and more with soaring harmonies, The Stepkids have made a name for themselves as one of the most artistically diverse bands today. Praise for their 2011 self-titled debut album and for their multi-sensory live show featuring interactive light art projections, led to tours with an eclectic mix of artists including Kimbra, Mayer Hawthorne & The County, Mates of State and others. While touring non-stop over the last two and a half years, the band has been carefully crafting the collection of songs found on Troubadour, an album shadowing the artists' journey to success. Deftly dancing on the ledge between art and commerce, harmonic skill and raw emotion, The Stepkids are just getting started. J. Roddy Walston & The Business - Essential Tremors (ATO) Comprising vocalist, guitarist and pianist J, Roddy Walston, lead guitarist and vocalist Billy Gordon, bassist and vocalist Logan Davis and drummer Steve Colmus began playing together when Walston moved from the southern church town of Cleveland, Tennessee to Baltimore. They since have earned their fans through what SPIN articulates as "full of spirited and sweaty Southern rock." The band recorded Essential Tremors at Soil Of The South Studios in Georgia with Mark Neill, the Grammy-winning producer and engineer of Black Keys' Brothers and Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit). The Weeknd - Kiss Land (Universal) Kiss Land follows up his unanimously celebrated platinum-selling 2012 debut, Trilogy. Tapping into that same signature mystique, this second effort is an elegant pastiche of love, longing, and lust set to a futuristic soundtrack of shimmering keys, disruptive synths, and airy atmospherics. It's dark. It's dangerous. It's decidedly sexy. It's The Weeknd. White Buffalo - Shadows, Greys and Evil Ways (Unison) This is the story of Joe and Jolene, a pair of young outsiders thrust together by chance, forging a deep, emotionally charged relationship that would at once haunt and sustain them throughout their lives. The musical and literary narrative of this album follows our broken hero, Joseph White, through his many trials and tribulations from young adulthood to death. His ballad is a tale of love, war, murder, the search for redemption, and a lifelong experiment of good and evil, asking many of the questions of human existence along the way. It is ultimately a story of hope and the power of love. Enjoy Shadows, Greys & Evil Ways. Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ..................................................
