New Arrivals for September 17th .................................................. The Blackbyrds - Essential Selection 1973-80 (Soul Temple) Donald Byrd was one of the greatest and most successful practitioners of the fusion of soul and jazz. In 1973 he released Black Byrd on Blue Note and it became the label's first million-seller. Taking their name from that album, a group of Byrd's Howard University students formed The Blackbyrds in 1974, and within a year they had delivered a top 10 pop hit. Their albums, produced by Donald Byrd and Larry Mizell, made a major impact on dance floors, urban radio waves and with black music lovers around the world. Drawn from their 8 LPs, this deluxe 2CD set presents a complete retrospective of the band's career. Bill Callahan - Dream River (Drag City) New solo album from the singer/songwriter also known for his work with Smog. In the song-world of Bill Callahan, the present realities tumble ecstatically like cloth in the wind - sheets and flags and clothes. Bill's a cartographer way out there, tracing the coastlines, telling the tales he has discovered along the way. Some seen in life and others in mind's eye, they float down "Dream River" with humble eminence. The plainspoken flies with the poetic in these songs, along with the sudden jolt of something you might remember: we call it laughter. Crystal Stilts - Nature Noir (Sacred Bones) Crystal Stilts first came to attention with an EP in 2005 and 2008's Alight of Night, an early ripple in what would soon be perceived of as a wave of fuzzy, reverb-laden bands. The intervening years have seen the band evolve, with 2011's robust In Love With Oblivion, and the Radiant Door EP, their debut release for Sacred Bones. Founded by vocalist Brad Hargett and guitarist JB Townsend, Crystal Stilts have since come to include Andy Adler on bass, Keegan Cooke on drums, and organist Kyle Forester. This 5-piece has come together and crafted the band's new LP. The Darcys - Warring (Arts & Crafts) Third album from the Toronto-based art rock band. Their debut was produced by Murray Lightburn of The Dears and was the first in a trilogy. Next was AJA, an interpretation of Steely Dan's 1977 studio masterpiece. The third album was written over three years and recorded in Toronto during the final six months of 2012 with a focus on sonic detail inspired by studio rock opuses of the 1970s. Mike Doughty - Circles (MRI) Doughty's new album finds him reinventing select songs originally performed by his former band, Soul Coughing. Mike had famously eschewed the band's repertoire as he built a solo career in the year after their 2000 split. But now he's revisiting 13 of those songs, including "Circles," "Super Bob Bon," and more in an effort to explore his original vision when he wrote them, and before they entered the dysfunctional fray of the band. Drive By Truckers - Alabama Ass Whuppin' [live, reissue] (ATO) This the official reissue of the bands long out of print live album from 2000. Recorded in various Georgia clubs during the Pizza Deliverance Tour of 1999, it is probably the most punk rock thing they have ever done. ATO Records & Drive-By Truckers have restored the original analogue mixes of the album which have been re-mastered with some new artwork. Factory Floor - s/t (DFA) Produced and recorded by the group in their North London warehouse space on a vintage mixing desk originally used by Dave Stewart decades ago to record all the Eurythmics' early hits. Perhaps the most unlikely aspect of Factory Floor's rise to notoriety is their versatility. Even their most ardent of fans describe their sound as punishing, yet they are equally at home playing raves, alternative festivals, art galleries, cinemas, nightclubs and rock shows; on top of that they're as likely to collaborate with members of Throbbing Gristle and New Order as they are with contemporary artists. Grouplove - Spreading Rumours (Atlantic) Produced by the band's own Ryan Rabin. Spreading Rumours - which follows Grouplove's acclaimed 2011 debut, Never Trust A Happy Song - will be led by the new single, "Ways To Go." Islands - Ski Mask (Redeye) Islands' latest, Ski Mask, percolates with the kind of polymorphous pop and hooky, left-of-center rock songs that have long been the bands stock in trade. Bob James - Rhodes Scholar: Jazz Funk Classics (Decision) Legendary keyboardist and composer Bob James is one of the major architects of the 70s jazz-funk sound, and is also notorious among a younger generation raised on hip hop. His early albums have been plundered for samples countless times, and his tunes "Nautilus" and "(Take Me To The) Mardi Gras" are two of the most revered b-boy classics, acknowledged as musical foundations of the hip hop movement. Amazingly, until now there has been no collection that focused on the funkiest side of the keyboardist's vast catalog, the years when his instrument of choice was the classic Fender Rhodes electric piano. The 22 songs here are the gold that beat-diggers sift through stacks of albums to find, with all of James' heaviest (and most heavily sampled) tracks included. Jack Johnson - From Here To Now To You (Universal) On his last two studio albums, Jack pushed into darker territory and delved deeper into electric guitar work than ever before in his music career. Now, with his 6th album, he reclaims his role as a maestro of surf folk-rock while expanding and strengthening his songwriting. Written entirely on acoustic guitar and brought to life with lush yet rustic instrumentation, the new album finds him refining his gift for storytelling that's both refreshingly down-to-earth and enlightening. MGMT - s/t (Columbia) MGMT are back with their 3rd album. The new album finds them continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music. Returning to longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer of Oracular Spectacular, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of songs that directly mirrors the duo's encompassing surrealist view of the everyday. Pleasure - Essential Selection 1975-82 (Soul Temple) Pleasure originated from the ashes of two Portland, Oregon bands, The Soul Masters and Franchise, to become veritable monsters of funk, soul and jazz. Their sound is often compared to Earth, Wind and Fire or Kool and the Gang. Tracks from all seven Pleasure albums are featured on this 2-CD set. Many of which have never been released on CD before, including an extended remix of "Foxy Lady" which was lost in vaults for 35 years. San Fermin - s/t (Downtown) Led by songwriter and composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone, San Fermin is a pastiche of post-rock, chamber-pop and contemporary classical composition. The album features 17 tracks that are strongly influenced by Ellis' unique background in classical music, which includes a job assisting composer/arranger Nico Muhly, and fittingly features instrumentalists from the likes of Bon Iver, yMusic, and Asphalt Orchestra. Sebadoh - Defend Yourself (Joyful Noise) Sebadoh, the longtime project of Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D'Amico, has signed with Indiana's Joyful Noise and re-emerged with the full-length album Defend Yourself. Defend Yourself marks a return to the self-recorded DIY ethos of early Sebadoh albums (Sebadoh III, Bakesale), and material from the Defend Yourself sessions has been hailed as commensurate with Sebadoh's finest moments. Shpongle - Museums of Consciousness (Twisted) Many can compare Shpongle to being like the Dead or Phish of electronic music. Since 1996 they have been touring the world, putting on amazing stageshows. They are known as the most prominent band of the Psychedelic Trance genre, with fans reaching from Goa, India, all the way through the new hippie communities of the Southwast America. A must for all fans of electronic downtempo. Often seen performing at festivals alongside Bassnectar and Infected Mushroom. Yip Deceiver - Medallius (New West) Electro-pop outfit Yip Deceiver, born out of Athens, Georgia, is the collaborative effort of Davey Pierce and Nicolas Dobbratz. The title encapsulates the elegance and coolness of their current lifestyle and implies the inevitable fame and fortune that awaits. The duo have enjoyed hours in the lab with outdated Midi hardware, tabletop technology, and analog and FM synths creating an electronic pop record with true soul and character.
