Welcome to Rocktober! Lots of good things on the horizon and on our plate for today. Next tuesday, 10/8, we help welcome the Communion Club Night to the Bluebird. Communion was formed in London in 2006 by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons. This monthly showcase will feature known and unknown national acts performing alongside quality local talent and DJs. Landlocked will have a pop-up shop on location. Performers include: Yacht Club DJs, Rubblebucket, Cosby Sweater, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Willy Mason, The New Old Cavalry. More info here. Join the fun! New Arrivals for October 1st .................................................. Blitzen Trapper - VII (Vagrant) The seventh album from the Portland, Oregon-based experimental Country/Folk act. VII's is full of the vivid folk-rock-campfire-tales frontman Eric Earley is so well known for. The album moves effortlessly from track to track allowing Earley to paint the colorful pictures that play in our head while singing along. The Blow - s/t (Kanine) Founding member Khaela Maricich partnered with Melissa Dyne to create an album that reflects their united love of pop music, bass, frequency, hooks and intimate lyrics. This is the long awaited first new release since 2007's Paper Television (K Records). Blue Sky Black Death - Glaciers (Fake Four) New release from the Seattle-based production duo featuring Kingston Maguire and Ian Taggart. Striving to continue progress into unexpected directions, Blue Sky Black Death now present their most ambitious and original work yet. Glaciers is a culmination of years of experimentation, a realization of ideas which were only hinted at in their previous efforts. Basia Bulat - Tall Tall Shadow (Secret City) Spin has praised the Juno-nominated singer's "bright harmonies and resonant alto voice" and Mother Jones raves, "this crafty Canadian folkie turns seemingly simple songs into engrossing accounts of desire and regret." Basia has shared the stage with artists including The National, St Vincent, Beirut, Tuneyards, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird and Nick Cave. She has also collaborated with Owen Pallett, who created orchestral arrangements of a selection of Basia's songs. Deltron 3030 - Event 2 (Bulk) Deltron 3030 is composed of a trinity of alt-rap all-stars: Master lyricist Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, superproducer Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura and virtuoso turntablist DJ Kid Koala. Individually, they stand at the top of their respective musical disciplines; together, on the eponymous Deltron 3030, they warped space, bent time, transcended genre and blew minds, creating an album that still stands today as one of the most important records in the annals of underground hiphop. Dr Dog - B Room (Anti) Dr. Dog's 3rd studio album on Anti, B Room, marks the band's greatest point of clarity in more than a decade of performing and recording. Their arrangements, while still ambitious, are much simpler, moving past the multi tracked pastiche of earlier efforts into a unique and vibrant band voice. Indeed, it is this discovery of the band collective as a compositional tool that makes it the most soulful, loose, and plain fun record of their career. The Field - Cupid's Head (Kompakt) The Berlin-based Swede presents the first album recorded solo since his debut and a powerful touch-up of his landmark hypnotism, but also a departure for new shores both personal and musical. The Field's multi-layered approach to sound now transcends its technicalities and reaches far beyond mere production values, entering a phase where its original message has become the medium for wildly differing emotions that also draw from his many side-projects: ubiquitous traces of his alter egos - like ambient bliss or dark disco inspired by classic horror movie soundtracks - can be found all over. More open than hermetic, Cupid's Head presents itself as tremendously accessible work, whose focus lies well beyond the tunnel vision of studio antics or sophisticated navel-gazing. Fuzz - s/t (In the Red) Fuzz is Ty Segall, Charlie Moothart and Roland Cosio. Moothart plays guitar in The Ty's Band and was also a member of The Moonhearts, which included Cosio on guitar. Way back in the early 00s, all 3 played in the Epsilons. The band's debut LP, which was recorded by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, The Intelligence), dives deep, drawing inspiration from the more esoteric reaches of heavy metal pre-history. There are Sabbath and Hendrix nods, but you might also catch a whiff of UK progressive blues business like The Groundhogs, particularly when the song quits its 10/4-time intro and reboots into full-bore choogle. The mood is not light. The songs project a state of perpetual paranoia and eroding mental health. And as it should be, you know? It s a record for the burners. Haim - Days Are Gone (Columbia) Days Are Gone is the highly anticipated debut album from HAIM. Recorded mostly in Los Angeles, the album sees sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim working alongside acclaimed producers Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend) and James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys). Lorde - Pure Heroine (Universal) It'd be easy to mistake Ella for a seasoned tunesmith from the American South, one who carries a heavy heart that's been ravaged by careless men over time. But in truth, Lorde recorded these songs as a 16-year old Kiwi championed by the likes of Perez Hilton and Grimes. She has a timeless knack for songcraft with a sophisticated pop savvy that most people over 30 can't find without collaboration. Lorde needs no collaborative hacks -- she writes and sings her own songs. Even when she sings in her higher vocal range about teenage politics, Lorde carries herself with the grace and poise of someone like Beth Orton. 2 track 7" also availble! Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven (Warp) New release from electronic musician Daniel Lopatin AKA Oneohtrix Point Never. R Plus Seven features his most forward thinking compositions yet. Drawing from choral work for Saatchi and Doug Aitken's Hirshhorn installation combined with themes of interactive fiction, OPN recorded RP7 as a kind of choose your own adventure from his past ambient work and new pop palette. Paper Kites - States (Nettwerk) The evocative debut album from the Melbourne 5-piece. Throughout States there's nods to Simon & Garfunkel and Dylan; energetic pop odes to angry individualists; vocal layers and musings on mortality; and rough and messy rock. The band collaborated with director Natasha Pincus (Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know") to deliver the magical music videos for singles "St Clarity" and "Young." Polvo - Siberia (Merge) During their initial run from 1990 1998, Polvo crafted a sound so fantastically obstinate and so perfectly cockeyed that its DNA is essentially resistant to mediocrity or repetition. On Siberia, that sound feels more limber and more aerodynamic than ever. Its songs glide and bob like UFOs, both serene and unsettling. Saint Rich - Beyond the Drone (Merge) Saint Rich is the musical partnership of Delicate Steve bandmates Christian Peslak and Steve Marion. One day in 2012, during a pause in near constant touring for Delicate Steve, Marion began to work on some new material with Christian Peslak, the group's guitarist and a musical collaborator of Marion's since high school. By the end of the weekend, neither had left the house. There were 7 new songs. And a new band. They named it Saint Rich. Those Darlins - Blur the Line (Oh Wow Dang) Blur The Line feels like a debut. This record is not a departure, nor is it simply growth. It is a realization purely of where Those Darlins are as artists right now. After sophomore record Screws Get Loose, Jessi, Nikki, and Linwood set out to uncover the true complex, contradictory nature of themselves as individuals and as a band. The result is a record to file on your shelf between Patti Smith's Easter and Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. Blur the Line is a first-rate album of powerful tracks that mingle heavy rhythms and distorted Neil Young guitars with ear-candy harmonies and a slew of captivating lyrics. Wood Brothers - The Muse (180) Produced by country-music legend Buddy Miller, the album embodies a newfound musical bond between brothers Oliver & Chris Wood, one cemented by 2 years on the road with a new full-time member, drummer Jano Rix. Recorded at Southern Ground in Nashville, The Muse mines their timeless influences- Robert Johnson, Willie Nelson, Charles Mingus and showcases their high-lonesome harmonies, gritty acoustic guitars, virtuosic standup bass and their warrior poet lyrics. Yuck - Glow & Behold (Fat Possum) Earlier this year, original frontman Daniel Blumberg left the band to record and perform as the experimental Hebronix, with lead guitarist Max Bloom transitioning to full-time frontman. The resulting album expands on the fuzzy 90s alt-rock of their excellent self-titled debut, ranging from tinges of playful My Bloody Valentine ("Rebirth") to a more impassioned Dinosaur Jr. ("Middle Sea").
