Get your tickets or at the door, and join in the fun! New Arrivals for October 8th .................................................. Bombay Dub Orchestra - Tales From The Grand Bazaar (Six Degrees) Mackay and Hughes formed BDO nearly ten years ago after visiting Bombay. Both men loved their experiences working with Indian orchestras and decided to pursue their compositional skills in the form of downtempo electronica and dub. Alongside unique originals, they're renowned for globally minded remixes, having reworked the songs of Bob Marley, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Bebel Gilberto and many others. This worldly mentality continued as recording sessions saw them bouncing around the US and London, through the Bombay and Delhi they know so well, as well as into Jamaica to work alongside the legendary team of Sly & Robbie. Danny Brown - Old (Fools Gold) Danny jumps from "artist to watch" to undeniable icon with his magnum opus, Old. This emotionally-charged concept album is an intoxicating mix of Danny at his most experimental AND most accessible, balancing hip-hop grit with electronic club sonics and much, much more. Featuring guest appearances from A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs, Purity Ring, Charli XCX, and more overproduction from the likes of A-Trak and Rustie, Old is a psychedelic portrait of rap's most vital and exciting new star. Cage the Elephant - Melophobia (RCA) The new album was recorded in Nashville, TN and reunites the band with producer Jay Joyce who produced the group's prior two releases. Cage The Elephant consists of singer Matt Shultz, guitarist Brad Shultz, bassist Daniel Tichenor, guitarist Lincoln Parish, and drummer Jared Champion. Anna Calvi - One Breath (Domino) A bold and confident record that begins an exciting chapter in this uniquely talented artist's career. Produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Walkmen, Clinic), One Breath was written in a year and recorded over a few intense weeks. The album is a more personal record than its Mercury Prize nominated predecessor. Reflective and vulnerable, it strikes a balance between optimism and despair, beauty and ugliness. The fiery elements of Anna's debut remain, but One Breath is more instinctive and urgent, revealing a wider spectrum of textures and emotion. Darkside - Psychic (Matador) Darkside is the collaborative duo of critically acclaimed electronic artist Nicolas Jaar and composer Dave Harrington. Darkside summon a hybrid of electronic music, psychedelic rock, and dance floor techno with the sort of artistic depth and breadth for which the term "progressive" was coined. Darkside's first full-length album released on Nico's own Other People label in conjunction with Matador Records is called Psychic. Psychic is a watershed moment for the duo, a quantum leap forward from their 3-song debut EP. Glasser - Interiors (True Panther) Interiors, Cameron Mesirow's second full-length release as Glasser, is a more considered, confident, and much more sharply personal album than its predecessor. It's central themes are love and anxiety and the spatial constraints of both in the landscape of one's life. In the three years since Cameron released her breakout Ring, she toured around the world and left her California home for New York. Along the way, she discovered a new partner in producer Van Rivers whose background in techno production added expansive spatial elements to her music. Lissie - Back to Forever (Fat Possum) Sunkissed mid-70s West Coast melodies are all over this second album and if there's wisdom in the lyrics, there's urgency and energy in the playing. "It's hard to put into words how much I love what I do," says Lissie, summing up. "I'm just telling stories that most people can relate to, I think. I sing with full pain and joy and it's gratifying when people hunker down and get in there with me at shows." Don Muro - It's Time LP (Flannelgraph) Originally self-released in 1977, synthesizer pioneer Don Muro's It's Time is the singular work of one man combining his skills as a trained musician with a truly creative spirit and the somewhat unmarketable insistence that all of these different styles of music would make up his debut album. While this kind of genre hopping can often take away from an album's coherence, It's Time works as a whole because these are such well-crafted and interesting songs. At times playfully fun, at times beautifully earnest, It is consistently engaging for its entire 42 minutes. Muro's sincere love of what he is creating shines through whether it's a triumphant rock anthem, subtly emotive instrumental synthesizer piece or an intense fusion dance jam. Of Montreal - Lousy with Sylvianbriar (Polyvinyl) The genius of Sylvianbriar is that it was created on a 24-track tape machine without the crutch of computer aided pitch correction, effects plug-ins and editing capabilities. With no computer tricks to fall back on, Kevin Barnes and the band recorded most of the songs live in the same room together. "I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people used to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s," reveals Barnes. "I wanted the songs to be more lyric-driven, and for the instrumental arrangements to be understated and uncluttered." Parquet Courts - Tally All the Things That You Broke EP (Whats Yr Rupture) Tally All The Things That You Broke is far more than a stopgap in between full-lengths; it's the sound of Parquet Courts stretching out. Simultaneously the link between Parquet Courts and Ween, or Parquet Courts and Beck, it frames the band coming from a new place, and is a post-millennial NYC anthem, quintessential sounds for anyone who's ever waited in anticipation of dialing that number, or anyone who's put on their game face and rode from point A to point B in the snarl of vicious traffic. Lee Ranaldo and The Dust - Last Night On Earth (Matador) Inspired by time spent trapped in his apartment during Hurricane Sandy last fall, Lee Ranaldo's 2013 album with his band The Dust tackles themes of despair, rage and societal shift. The songs on the new album are darker, longer and more intense than those of its predecessor. In particular, the intertwining guitar play between Ranaldo and Alan Licht enlivens these beautiful, scary songs. The Dust also features the incredible drumming of Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and bass work of Tim Luntzel (who has worked with artists from Van Dyke Parks to Norah Jones. RJD2 - More Is Than Isn't (RJ's) A diverse and consistently brilliant set from indie hip hop RJD2 - mostly instrumental, but featuring a handful of worthy vocal guests - and it's ultimately another win for one of the most consistently excellent producer/artists in the game! More Is Than Isn't manages to touch on areas that RJ has connected to in the past - with a remarkably different vibe from track to track - but doesn't feel like he's revisting past glories at all, it's more like the worthwhile encapsulation of a remarkable career to date. Raw, heavy breakbeat driven cuts, cosmic keyboard flavored jams, a disco funk snapshot, jazzy hip hop suites and more. Sleigh Bells - Bitter Rivals (Mom + Pop) Third album from the duo Sleigh Bells featuring Alexis Krauss (vocals) and Derek Miller (guitar). Miller was a guitarist in the Hardcore band Poison the Well. Alexis Krauss performed in the teen pop group RubyBlue. With backgrounds that seemed like polar opposites, Sleigh Bells have managed to find the middle ground and serve up a sound that is both sweet and sour. VA - CBGB OST (Omnivore) By the end of 1973, NYC was bankrupt, Watergate had compromised the credibility of the government, and the Carpenters were the best-selling young recording act in America. Rock n roll was dead! Enter Hilly Kristal, who dreamed of running a country & blues bar in the Bowery. Instead, the club he opened, CBGB became the birthplace of punk and underground music. The soundtrack contains music from influential artists that informed the scene (Velvet Underground, The Stooges and MC5), to acts that broke through with huge commercial acclaim (Talking Heads, Blondie, The Police). And there's even music from bands whose legendary status will forever be linked to the club that gave them a voice (Dead Boys, Television, Wayne County, The Dictators).
