A few quickies: Our Halloween crate is up and running with all kinds of wild and scary CDs, LPs, 7"s, DVDs, and VHS! Check it out next time you stop by. What else? Black friday is just over a month away! Friday November 29th. Mark yr calendars for a visit to LL as we will have some goodness planned for ya! New Arrivals for October 15th .................................................. Avett Brothers - Magpie and the Dandelion (American) The 8th album from the alt-folk dudes. The album was produced by Rick Rubin, who produced their previous two full-length studio albums, I and Love and You and The Carpenter. The band says the album conveys a feeling on "youthful wonder". Regular and deluxe CD versions both available, as well as LP. Diane Birch - Speak a Little Louder (S-Curve) Writing both alone and with acclaimed Dap Kings-drummer Homer Steinweiss on much of this new record, this new collection of songs mark a distinct progression for Diane. She likes to think of herself as an old soul, and indeed there is a startling maturity in her singing and a self-assurance in her writing. With hook-driven songs, Diane mixes piano virtuosity with easy-going soul, and can strike an uplifting groove on even the most melancholy tune. Her work bears hints of Laura Nyro and early 70's Karen Carpenter, while effortlessly incorporating New Orleans second-line rhythms, gospel fervor, doo-wop harmonies, country-blues guitar and classic AM radio-style melodies. Boardwalk - s/t (Stones Throw) "I'm to Blame" is the first single from the LA-based duo of Mike Edge and Amber Quintero. Off the strength of this and several other songs, it earned them a deal with Stones Throw. There is echo and reverb and wraith-like seductive vocals. It feels like it was written to soundtrack the final montage scene in a movie. Tears, slow-motion running, and the slow sepia fade. This is ideal for slurred late nights and awkward swoons. It is the song voted most likely to cause someone to take their girlfriend behind a liberal arts college and get them pregnant. RIYL Mazzy Star or Beach House. Cults - Static (Columbia) Static is the follow-up to Cults' critically adored debut release. Written and recorded over the course of 2012 in NYC, Static is produced by Cults with support from Shane Stoneback (Sleigh Bells, Vampire Weekend) and Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Washed Out). The album is comprised of 11 tracks including "I Can Hardly Make You Mine" and first single "High Road." Cults is the genesis of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, who mysteriously appeared in the spring of 2010 with their viral single "Go Outside." Acclaimed for what the NY Times describes as an "entrancing and intuitive strain of indie rock indebted to clean-cut 50s rock with flashes of 60s haze." The Dismemberment Plan - Uncanney Valley (Partisan) Since forming in Washington, DC in 1993, the band has released four highly acclaimed full-lengths and become one of the most well respected and indefinable acts in indie rock. Uncanney Valley, their first album in over a decade, maintains The Dismemberment Plan's unique sound while simultaneously allowing them to open up and expand on the foundation of their celebrated back catalog. It's too well-crafted, too gregarious, too self-assured, and too joyful to not be enjoyable. It's not the stone cold classic that Emergency & I was, but it knows that it doesn't have to be. They no longer have anything to prove. The Head & the Heart - Let's Be Still (Sub Pop) Their 2011 debut album on Sub Pop became one of the label's best-selling debut releases to date. In a few short months THATH went from playing open mic nights to selling out large venues and building a loyal fan base across the country. The new album is a snapshot of a band that didn't exist just 4 short years ago. The album was recorded at Seattle's Studio Litho with assistance from prior production collaborator Shawn Simmons. Later, the band traversed the country to mix the album with Peter Katis, revered for his work with bands such as the National, Interpol, and the Swell Season. Get a free postcard set with purchase! La Luz - Its Alive (Hardly Art) Seattle surf-noir quartet La Luz release their highly anticipated full length LP after collecting up high praise in regards to their live shows from LA to Texas to NY and everywhere in between and around! The band has caused even the most jaded show goer to join in on the dance party by way of Soul Train. Musically, the bands address is somewhere around the Lively Ones, right next to the Shangri-Las, and across the street from Mazzy Star. This band has chops! This band has surf! This band has songs! It's the band you have been waiting for. Glenn Lewis - Moment of Truth (Ruffhouse) Glenn Lewis is ushering in the return of true R&B. With his debut album on Ruffhouse, Lewis has embraced the legacy of great R&B legends like Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and Luther Vandross, the vocal mastery of stylists like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway to create his Moment Of Truth. The album has songs produced and written by Grammy Award veterans such as Andre Harris, Vidal Davis, Carvin Haggins, Ivan Barias, and Corey "Latif" Williams, along with newcomers CertiFYD and Matrax. Lucius - Wildewoman (Mom + Pop) Lucius is a triple-threat of vocal harmonies, infectious hooks and dance-inducing percussion. Pair those traits with the band's irresistible live show and it's easy to see why NPR Music calls Lucius "a fabulous band playing such infectious pop songs" and Paste hails the group as "blissful." Charismatic co-founders and lead vocalist Jesse Wolfe and Holly Laessig sing in unison - two voices as one - uniquely delivering songs with stories told from the same perspective. Multi-instrumentalists Andrew Burri, Peter Lalish, and Dan Molad round out the stylish Brooklyn-based quintet. Paul McCartney - New (HBNT10) Paul said: "It's funny, when I play people the album they're surprised it's me. A lot of the tracks are quite varied and not necessarily in a style you'd recognize as mine. I didn't want it to all sound the same. I really enjoyed making this album. It's always great to get a chance to get into the studio with a bunch of new songs and I was lucky to work with some very cool producers. We had a lot of fun." Deluxe CD also available. Bonus neato glow box thingy with purchase! Cass McCombs - Big Wheel and Others (Domino) Big Wheel and Others is Cass' 7th-and-a-half album and the follow-up to the 2011's pair of releases Wit's End and Humor Risk. It comprises 22 songs, but "double album" implies bloat, prog, and concept, so, let's stick with "songs." This album is a bundle, a bindle, a hay bale, and an oil barrel of songs. Some of the genres that are to be found in varying degrees in the songs on this album are: Road songs, rock songs, folk songs, blues songs, country songs, rhythm and blues songs, skronk non-songs, cinema songs, cult songs, poem songs, jams, and ballads. Willie Nelson - To All The Girls (Legacy) Willie reunites with his two greatest loves: beautiful music and talented women. Among the centerpieces is the emotional duet with Dolly Parton, "From Here To The Moon and Back." Willie also tackles Bill Withers' classic "Grandma's Hands" with Mavis Staples, duets with Sheryl Crow and brings a new shade to his self penned classic "Always on My Mind" with Carrie Underwood. Willie is also joined by familiar contemporaries including Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Miranda Lambert, Norah Jones, Loretta Lynn and Roseanne Cash. Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt (Monkeywrench) Pearl Jam will release their much-anticipated tenth studio album, Lightning Bolt, on Monkeywrench Records in the US. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, Lightning Bolt marks Pearl Jam's first studio album since the highly acclaimed Backspacer, which was released nearly four years ago. The album still feels fresher and more relevant than the world at large might expect at this point- this classic-rock band still has at least a few classics left in it. Pelican - Forever Becoming (Southern Lord) Fifth album from the Chicago-based Post-Metal band. Forever Becoming was produced by Chris Common, formerly of These Arms Are Snakes, who also previously produced Pelican's 2009 studio album, What We All Come to Need. Forever Becoming is the first Pelican album since the band's inception in 2001 to not feature founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec. Free bonus live CD with purchase! Red Fang - Whales & Leeches (Relapse) On Whales And Leeches, Red Fang worked with producer Chris Funk and mixer Vance Powell, the very same team helmed Red Fang's last album, Murder The Mountains, which Alt Press magazine hailed as "a near-masterpiece of tangled tar pit riffs and whisky-and-bong-hit vocals." Deluxe hologram CD available; free beer koozie with purchase! Luke Temple [Here We Go Magic] - Good Mood Fool (Secretly Canadian) In the winter Luke Temple moved into a cottage, a small one, in upstate NY. The snow fell quietly. He had frozen blueberries and bread and eggs and Coors Original. He sang and drank and played and drank and ate and shoveled snow and when the snow melted and the roads cleared he had his friends. Eliot Kirmsky (Glass Ghost) and Mike Johnson (Dirty Projectors) dug into Luke's hut and together they built a fire. He called it Good Mood Fool. Jonathan Wilson - Fanfare (Downtown) Hailed as updating the classic Laurel Canyon sound, in reality Jonathan Wilson is a far more complex, idiosyncratic entity. Sure, there are shades of that pastoral early 70s sound and even psychedelia, but the West Coast artist seems to continually play between influence and identity, tradition and possibility. Featuring contributions from Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (AKA Father John Misty), Wilco's Patrick Sansone, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith and more, Fanfare reaches for a lush sound.
