Arthur Mag - Issue 35 (Arthur) Finally available after many long delays and shipping mishaps! Wily folkplayer Michael Hurley has charmed hip audiences for over fifty years now with his timeless surrealist tunes and sweetly weird comics, all the while maintaining a certain ornery, outsider mystique. Longtime Snockhead/Arthur Senior Writer Byron Coley investigates this Wild American treasure in an enormous 11,000-word, 8-Page feature replete with rare photos, artwork, comics and a giant color portrait by Liz Devine. Snock attack! Plus Twig Harper, Bernie Krause, Coltrane, Bull Tongue and so much more. Only $5! Best Coast - Fade Away EP (Jewel City) New mini album from the Alt-Rock duo comprised of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno. Fade Away features seven tracks including two previously released for a Record Store Day single, "Fear of My Identity" and "Who Have I Become". The material was produced by Wally Gagel, who also produced their 2011 iTunes EP. Black Hearted Brother [Slowdive/Seefeel] - Stars Are Our Home (Slumberland) A brave, beautiful yet experimental album, "Stars Are Our Home" boasts the craftsmanship of Halstead, Van Hoen, and Holton's impressive resumes: Neil Halstead, previously an influential member of Slowdive and Mojave 3; Mark Van Hoen, an original member of Seefeel, subsequently working solo and as Locust; and Nick Holton, the main mover behind Holton's Opulent Oog, and member of Coley Park, who have released albums on Halstead's Shady Lane label. They had also previously worked together on Halstead's 2001 solo album, "Sleeping On Roads." Van Hoen co-produced Mojave 3's "Out Of Tune," "Excuses For Travellers" and "Spoon & Rafter," while Holton took up production duties for Halstead's Palindrome Hunches. Van Hoen and Halstead go back much further still, to 1992, when they were in Seefeel and Slowdive respectively. "Stars Are Our Home" mirrors the similar experimental nature of Halstead's previous work - he describes the album as, "a lot of very long and indulgent space rawk." Boards of Canada - LP reissues pt 1 (Warp) The first 3 of 6 vinyl reissues from the beloved electro-ambient group. Music Has The Right To Children 2xLP Gatefold Vinyl - 140g pressing cut from original metalwork. Includes Skam braille sticker and transparent blue Boards of Canada sticker. Geogaddi 3xLP Gatefold Vinyl - 140g pressing recut by Noel Summerville from original DAT master. Includes etching on side F. Includes sticker sheet with hexagon die cut stickers. The Campfire Headphase 2xLP Gatefold Vinyl - 140g pressing cut from original metalwork. Includes circular blue sticker. Liquor Store - In the Garden (Almost Ready) Whereas Yeah Buddy was a magnum 2xLP opus, In the Garden clocks in at a concise 35 minutes with eight songs of uncut rock showing off the guitar moves they've tightened the screws on even further since last go-round. The production is fittingly big, the instrumentation full of flash and bang and polished with liberal doses of piano, harmonica, tambo, keys, snaps, claps and more that sound like a million bucks. The triple guitar assault is devastating, recalling the majestic three gun attack of Molly Hatchet and echoing some of their fine Southern rock moves as well. If anyone has any taste (or a clue) this record should be launching Liquor Store into the music stratosphere. Real rock'n'roll is a mercurial thing- don't let it slip through fingers. Mojo Magazine - Paul McCartney / November The latest issue of MOJO magazine goes large on Paul McCartney: his new album, New and the irksome fog of myth that surrounds the Beatles. The free CD, Songs In The Key Of Paul, presents power pop in the benign shadow of Macca; Flamin' Groovies, Robyn Hitchcock, Cotton Mather, Yo La Tengo, Redd Kross and Squeeze pitch in. Also in the issue: Roger Taylor on Queen; Lou Reed; Earl Sweatshirt; Virgin Records at 40; Lost women of folk; The Pixies; and the new Arcade Fire album. Polica - Shulamith (Mom + Pop) Minneapolis continues its golden run of producing quality talent with the follow-up from the Gayngs collective and super slick electronic pop-soul outfit Polica. Fronted by ice cool vocalist Channy Leanagh who sang with Gayngs, produced by Ryan Olson and featuring Mike Noyce from Bon Iver, it's a who's who of the current Twin Cities scene. Polica is a band for both men and women, but it's especially important as sort of rebellion against pop music and the way women are portrayed, it's a reminder of force, assertion & rawness. Sleeping Bag / Rozwell Kid - Dreamboats (Jurassic Pop) Dreamboats may seem an unlikely name for an album that focuses on the introspective ramblings of men who spend a lot of time justifying the purchase of expensive samurai swords and eating dog food as a potato chip substitute. But these are the major conflicts considered by this joint effort between Sleeping Bag and Rozwell Kid. Dreamboats plumbs a serious emotional depth that belies its outwardly silly surface. The album balances harmonic hooks with depression; anxiety reveling in alt-rock glory. "Every now and then, I get the urge to decimate something that I tell myself I can't live without." Cue guitar solo. Omar Souleyman - Wenu Wenu (Ribbon) Omar is a Syrian musical legend. Since 1994, he and his musicians have emerged as a staple of folk-pop throughout Syria, but until now they have remained little known outside of the country. To date, they have issued more than five-hundred studio and live-recorded cassette albums which are easily spotted in the shops of any Syrian city. Wenu Wenu marks Omar Souleyman's first widely distributed studio album. Produced by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and recorded primarily live in the studio, Wenu Wenu distills the artist's enthralling live performance into a recorded fury of ascending and descending techno scales punctuated by the voice of its creator. Matthew White - Outer Face EP (Domino) If Matthew E. White's Big Inner cut a canyon in the landscape of modern music, Outer Face is the wind sweeping through it. White's five-song EP tells the story of now (and of what's next) in a new maximal language of minimal voices: percussion, strings, bass, and choir, alone, erupt as White sings us through the sensual and spiritual world terraformed by Big Inner - and into outer space.
