Arcade Fire - Reflektor (Merge) With a penchant for theatrical, bombastic anthems, Montreal's Arcade Fire has amassed a broad loyal following without compromising their singular artistic vision. Reflektor is Arcade Fire's fourth official studio album. It is the highly anticipated follow up to 2011 Grammy winning album of the year The Suburbs. The double album was produced by the band, LCD Soundsystem front man James Murphy, and long-time collaborator Markus Dravs. Eduard Artemiev - Solaris OST LP (Superior Viaduct) It's only appropriate that Solaris, Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's psychological sci-fi classic from 1972, contains an equally original and mind-bending score. Solaris explores the inadequacies of time and memory on an enigmatic planet below a derelict space station. To reinforce the film's chilling setting, Tarkovsky commissioned composer Eduard Artemiev to construct an electronic soundscape reflecting planet Solaris' amorphous and mysterious surface; Artemiev rose to the challenge with a prophetic work that defies the era's technological limitations while evoking unparalleled emotional responses even today. 3 different cover variations available! Joe Bonamassa - Tour de Force DVDs (J&R) The Tour De Force series of live DVDs chronicles guitarist Joe Bonamassa's atmospheric rise from the intimate club environment of The Borderline, to the prestigious Royal Albert Hall (As well as Shepherd's Bush Empire and Hammersmith Apollo). Each individual evening was marked by a unique theme with different setlists, arrangements and ensembles providing the viewer with four unique performances. Also available on Blu-ray. Diane Coffee - My Friend Fish (Western Vinyl) Joseph Campbell describes a shaman as "person, male or female, who...has an overwhelming psychological experience that turns him totally inward. It's a kind of schizophrenic crack-up. The whole unconscious opens up, and the shaman falls into it." We'll never know the whole truth about what happened when (Foxygen drummer and former Disney child actor) Shaun Fleming moved from the West Coast suburbs to New York, but whatever it was fractured his psyche, opened it up, and gave birth to Diane Coffee. Devil Makes Three - I'm A Stranger Here (New West) TDM3's travels & travails serve as inspiration for their 4th album, produced by Buddy Miller & recorded at Dan (Black Keys) Auerbach's studio in Nashville. With upright bassist Lucia Turino & guitarist Cooper McBean, singer Pete Bernhard crafted a dozen tunes, part road songs, part heartbreak songs & part barnburners. While most bands are propelled from behind by a drummer, TDM3 builds exuberant rhythms from the inside out, wrapping finger-picked strings & upsurging harmonies around chugging acoustic guitar & bass. Catch them at The Bluebird on Nov 11th! Jonwayne - Rap Album One (Stones Throw) Jonwayne came onto the music scene by way of the east Los Angeles club Low End Theory circa 2008-09, then emerging as the epicenter of a new generation of hip-hop beat makers: Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Kutmah, Daedelus. Fresh out of high school, Jonwayne jumped in with homemade rap mixtapes and immersed himself in the scene. He first became known as a producer - but it was his over-sized skill on the mic that caught the attention of Peanut Butter Wolf, who signed him to record an album as an MC. Lily & Madeleine - s/t (Asthmatic Kitty) Like truth, beauty resides in simplicity. When it manifests itself, it doesn't require elaborate arguments or proofs; you can't debate someone into apprehending it. It's apparent and all it requires is appreciation, or perhaps even love. Such are the songs of Indianapolis' Lily & Madeleine. Understandably, when their debut EP, The Weight of the Globe, came out in early 2013, much was made of the fact that Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz are teenagers: Madeleine is 18 and her sister is 16. Surely, that's important given the impressive talent on display. Produced by Paul Mahern; songs co-written by Kenny Childers. Mutation - Error 500 (Ipecac) Featuring the talents of Shane Embury (Napalm Death), Ginger Wildheart (Wildhearts) and Jon Poole (Cardiacs), with guest spots from Mark E Smith (The Fall) and Merzbow, Mutation is a an 8 man beast that exists to challenge the listener's preconceived ideas of extreme music. It will reward your attention with a white knuckle ride that travels at blast-beat speed along rails of industrial mayhem, thrilling with break neck twists and hyper rhythmic turns, guaranteed to leave you breathless and baying for more. Intense and entirely random, this is an album to be loved by fans of all genres of experimental and extreme music, but especially by the type of listener that needs the parameters shifted a little more to the left. Nobunny - Secret Songs: Reflections From The Ear Mirror (Goner) Secret Songs: Reflections from the Ear Mirror, Nobunny's new LP on Goner Records, proves the Bay Area garage rocker's absurd appropriation of rock 'n' roll knows no bounds. In true Nobunny style, the album is a mixture of styles and fidelities, like having a garbage bin of awesomeness dumped on your head, the slime at the bottom rushing into your earholes and staining your brain. William Onyeabor - World Psychedelic Classics 5 (Luaka Bop) A great collection from the Nigerian Funk musician. In the early 21st century, a shadowy figure rose from the dust that settled atop forgotten record collections throughout Africa, leaving behind a trail of clues in what seemed like a wild goose chase, but on this release, Luaka Bop will unmask the great William Onyeabor! Badass. Phosphorescent - Muchacho de Lujo (Dead Oceans) Muchacho de Lujo is the deluxe edition of one of 2013's most renowned albums, Muchacho, which garnered the coveted Best New Music (Pitchfork) tag as well as the adoration of The NY Times and Time Magazine. The bonus material is from an intimate pre-release live show, recorded at St. Pancras Church in London. The set, performed as a 2-piece of guitar and piano, features standout tracks from across the Phossy catalog including "Song For Zula," "Mrs. Juliette Low," "Wolves," and a cover of Waylon Jennings' "Storms Never Last." Russian Circles - Memorial (Sargent House) Perhaps the most immediately apparent characteristic of Memorial is its wide range of emotion. Vacillating from somber-yet-soaring melodies on one track to pummeling metal heft on the next, Memorial sounds like an album with split personalities. Where one song showcases their mastery of lush melancholic melody, the next exhibits their most abrasive underground metal leaning sound, with washed-out 16th-note riffs and crushing rhythms. The band's penchant for endless hooks remains a constant, but Memorial embodies their most dramatic ranges in tone. Son Lux - Lanterns (Joyful Noise) Meditative but heaving with energy, Son Lux's third full-length weaves disparate elements into songs both strange and welcoming. On the heals of being named NPR's "Best New Artist of the Year", Son Lux created an album that sits as comfortably next to the compositions of Stravinsky, John Adams, David Lang and Ben Frost, as it does to those of Jamie Lidell, Bjork, Flying Lotus, and Radiohead. Maria Taylor - Something About Knowing (Saddle Creek) Azure Ray's Maria Taylor returns with her 5th solo album Something About Knowing. Recorded with Mike Mogis and Andy LeMaster, it features the single "Up All Night." "This record has the spirit of 'This is how I feel now, and these are all the elements that brought me here,'" Maria explains. "I listened to my previous records and went in the studio wanting to take the best elements of each of them...I feel like I really conquered something on this one." Dave Van Ronk - Down on Washington Square (Smithsonian) Dave Van Ronk epitomized the "folksinger's folksinger" apprenticing through immersion in the folk music revival's epicenter of Washington Square, mentoring musicians such as Bob Dylan, Suzanne Vega, and many more. Drawing from unreleased recordings as well as from the Smithsonian Folkways vault, it paints a musical mosaic of Van Ronk's artistry from his first Folkways album to his final concert in 2001. It keeps alive the genius of a consummate folk performer who inspired audiences, musicians, and an upcoming motion picture - Inside Llewyn Davis, directed by Joel & Ethan Coen.
