New Arrivals for November 19th .................................................. Angie - Turning LP (Easter Bilby) Angela Garrick is a Sydney native who's probably best known for her tenure in Straight Arrows, Circle Pit, and a couple other bands. Her debut solo album is a total star turn for Angie, bringing her fully into the spotlight on a record with a tightly honed, dark hued aesthetic. There's a trudge to these songs; there are guitar solos, but they never outright rip or soar. Everything here feels somewhat dour, but when you've got melodies like the one on "Parallels", that's not a bad thing. Blood Orange - Cupid Deluxe (Domino) Blood Orange aka Devonte Hynes returns with his brand new album Cupid Deluxe, his follow up to the acclaimed Coastal Grooves. The album features guest performances by David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Samantha Urbani (Friends), Clams Casino, Despot, Adam Bainbridge (Kindness), Skepta and many more. Michael Hurley - Land Of Lo Fi LP (Mississippi) Here we have Hurleys latest batch of home recordings and believe me when I say they are some of his best songs ever. It's unusual for a man 50 years into his recording career to come up with some of his greatest songs yet, but here 'tis. Hurley plays heart breakers solo with guitar and/or organ accompaniment, along with 3 tracks where he is joined by the beautiful voice of Jolie Holland. True geniuses are hard to come by, so wake on up and give this record a long hard listen. Liminanas - Costa Blanca (Trouble in Mind) The Liminanas are back on Trouble In Mind with their third album, "Costa Blanca"! Once again recorded at their home in the south of France by Lio himself, "Costa Blanca" pushes the envelope of their signature Franc-o-phonic sound; the coloeur café cool of Gainsbourg, the hypnotic drone of VU-era Cale, and the spiky fuzz of Davie Allan. This time around the band laces the tunes with a dramatic flair of French New Wave soundtracks & the percussive sonic accents found in Morricone's work in Il Gruppo, particularly "The Feed-Back" whose funk-laced tracks incorprate elements of avant-classical and experimental sonic elements. RIYL: Serge Gainsbourg, Velvet Underground, Kim Fowley, Ennio Morricone, Stereolab. Mojo Magazine - Dec 2013 (Mojo) To celebrate our 20th anniversary we asked 20 of our favourite musicians what they were doing when they turned 20. Jimmy Page, John Lydon, Ringo Starr, Alex Turner, Brian Wilson, Jeff Beck, Debbie Harry, Paul Weller, Prince Buster, Ray Davies, Martha Reeves, Yoko Ono, Cliff Richard, Steven Tyler, Danger Mouse, David Crosby, Pete Seeger, Buddy Guy, Bobby Womack and John Cale contribute. Plus Stevie Nicks, Laura Mvula, Kate Bush, a FREE CD and much more! Jeffrey Novak - Lemon Kid (Trouble in Mind) Between his main band Cheap Time's relentless touring schedule & recording (they probably have a new album out by the time you read this), he somehow finds the time to record solo material under his own name. His solos LPs have a sincere understanding of the maudlin melodies & pop music from the early 70s inspired by the likes of Ray Davies, John Cale, Brian Eno & the pervy balladry of Kevin Ayers. "Lemon Kid" is undoubtedly his most focused to date, distilling all that came before into one succinct & engaging listen. Guitars squeal & synths unravel from song to song, with Novak pushing the envelope of what in takes to create music in a pop setting, teasing sonic boundaries while retaining what makes a song great - the hooks. Rush - Clockwork Angels Tour CD/DVD (Zoe) Live release from the Canadian rock trio. Rush: Clockwork Angels Tour features over 3 hours of music including favorites "Tom Sawyer" and "The Spirit of Radio," three drum solos, new string arrangements of classics such as "YYZ," "Dreamline" and "Red Sector A," and rarely performed songs such as "The Body Electric" and "Middletown Dreams." With over 40 million albums sold worldwide and more consecutive gold and platinum awards than any other rock band following The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Rush remains one of the most inventive, compelling, and relevant musical groups today. Kurt Vile - it's a big world out there (and i am scared) (Matador) Between genre/era/lifetime-defining full lengths, Kurt Vile has made a name for himself with limited vinyl edition EPs. The it's a big world out there (and i am scared) 12" continues this tradition with its inclusion of "Never Run Away" from 2013's breakthrough LP, Wakin On A Pretty Daze - this time with the beef'd up "string synth" version. The 12" also includes brand new tracks: the fingerpicked earworm "feel My Pain" and the bedroom psych moves of "the Ghost of Freddie Roach". Wakin standouts "snowflakes Are Falling" and "Air Bud" are also reprised here a "Snowflakes Extended" and "Wedding Budz", respectively. VA - I Am The Center: Private Issue New Age Music In America 1950-90 (Light in the Attic) Forget everything you know, or think you know, about new age, a genre that has become one of the defining musical-archaeological explorations of the past decade. I Am The Center: Private Issue New Age In America, 1950-1990 is the first major anthology to survey the golden age of new age and reveal the unbelievable truth about the genre. For new age, at its best, is a reverberation of psychedelic music, and great by any standard. This is analog, handmade music communicating soul and spirit, often done on limited means and without commercial potential, self-published and self-distributed. Before it became big business and devolved into the spaced out elevator music we know and loathe today, this was the real thing.
